Thank God that Iggy Pop/Elijah Wood Movie Is Not Happening

Why Music Biopics Never Get Mastered

Remember that Iggy Pop biopic starring Elijah Wood? That Marvin Gaye biopic starring the guy from Law & Order? Kirsten Dunst playing Debbie Harry? Zooey Deschanel (or was it Melissa Etheridge) as Janis Joplin? Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix? Lenny Kravitz as Hendrix? What about Laurence Fishburne as Hendrix? You probably remember none of those movies, because after tons of buzz, they all faded away into the veritable Bermuda Triangle that is music-biopic development. Is The World Ready For A Jerry Garcia Biopic?

It's kind of fashionable to dig the Grateful Dead these days, which is good because I dig the band's first four or five records a lot and had an oh-so-brief flirtation with collecting bootlegs and such in 1992. But the live noodling never did it for me compared to the surprisingly jam-free records, and then I discovered Bob Mould and Pavement and The Cure and such. Lots of people (including us, sorta) were all freaked out about the condo construction next to the famed Capitol Records building's studios and what affect the giant underground parking garage might have on the studio's famed echo chambers. Thankfully, a compromise has been worked out between the builders and Capitol that can allow Katy Perry to record unlistenable b-sides at the studio and overpriced condos to be built. Terms that have no meaning to me whatsoever like "sound baffle" are being thrown around in the settlement, but in the end, it's probably good to keep somewhat irreplaceable things like the echo chambers intact, even if it slows the inevitable encroachment of condos. who really needs music venues, anyway?

Good Luck, Knitting Factory L.A.

Once upon a time, the Knitting Factory's location in Hollywood was not terribly glamorous; it was surrounded by gift shops, liquor stores and the 18th Street Gang, and had an abandoned entertainment museum as an immediate neighbor. But Hollywood has shaped up quite a bit in the last few years post-Hollywood and Highland complex, and now that the property has become more valuable, the Knitting Factory is apparently not the sort of tenant the city of Los Angeles wants around.
