idolator's 2008 summer jam tournament
It's been a long tournament, but Idolator's Summer Jam Of 2008 has finally been decided, and the winner is "Coconut Juice," the Harry Nilsson-inspired party jam by Tyga that consistently crushed its competition. Estelle's lighter-than-air "American Boy" put up a good fight in the final—the split was 53.5% "Coconut Juice," 46.5% "American Boy"—but people just love singing about drinking in the summertime, I guess. (Just don't forget to hydrate!) The video of the victor, and a look back at the full roster of competitors, after the jump.

This song was a commenter favorite, and I'll let chachwitablog take it away as to why: "The second I heard "loving you long time" I thought (a) this song is the perfect throwback to 90s Mariah, and (b) this song will take over my spring summer. I already played it out a little much, but it's due for a comeback pretty soon. Too bad it won't be a single..." Well, don't cry yet, chach—Mariah's apparently shooting a video for the track within the near future, so its path to summertime chart dominance may be cleared faster than you can say "Mimi." Kardinall Offishall, "Dangerous (feat. Akon)"
There's really nothing to "Dangerous": A simple synth line, an uncomplicated beat, Akon doing his Akon thing on the chorus, and Kardinall Offishall pulling off a mix of dancehall and Trick Daddy. The girl described might be dangerous, but the song poses no threat whatsoever, and in the end, that's why it works. The four minutes or so are over before you know it, and you might feel the urge to press rewind, or whatever the two backward arrows are called these digital days. Kardinal's stage name might too difficult to spell for American pop radio program directors, but that's the only thing keeping this song from dominating the airwaves this summer. [YouTube]

Lloyd and Lil Wayne teamed for one of my favorite jams last year, the caddish "You," and by lifting a classic beat and letting Lloyd's falsetto fly, they've raised their own bar. A throwback jam that still feels of the moment, "Girls Around The World" is one of those tracks that probably would have ruled my summer back when I was first discovering pop in Z100's early days, and I'm just glad that it finally came into existence in time to save what was looking to be a pretty dire year for car-radio staples. All the attention lavished on this new-model Dusty Springfield/Lulu concerns the sound of her voice (say it again: more Lulu than Dusty). But what makes "Mercy" so enticing is everything swirling around it before it sings a note: the opening bassline, which retools "Stand By Me" (by way of De La Soul's "A Little Bit of Soap") for the umpteenth time; then, a bit of "96 Tears" Farfisa; and, seconds later, another layer of chewy '80s keyboards a la Prince or New Order. These hooks weave and bob around Duffy's brassy voice and transform it into one more sound effect, making this so-called "retro" piece a work of high-tech, minor genius. [YouTube]

If alt-rock ever gave us a summer album, it was Weezer's 1994 debut. And if Weezer has ever recorded a song since that captures the sound of that classic, it's "Pork And Beans." The distortion pedals, the lead that kicks in halfway through the chorus—the world has turned, and left us with a classic alt-rock summer jam just when the genre seemed consumed by the moldiest yarl.
