Everything was going so well, Canada, until you had to ruin all my fun. Specifically, my dream of hearing Mookie Morris perform Bryan Adams' "Heaven," which was dashed last week when the Canadian people allowed him to be kicked off their poor excuse for a singing competition. Since I've come this far with the program, I'll continue with my recapping duties. But I won't like it.
I missed a week of covering the peaks and valleys of Canadian Idol due to some family issues, and what a week I missed, with Simple Plan as the mentors and the proud legacy of Canadian rock music as the theme. (Before you ask: Yes, someone did a Tragically Hip song.) There were two things worth noting during that week, during which we said goodbye to Amberly Thiessen of Alberta.

I've been sort of looking forward to combing through YouTube clips and blog recaps of the previous night's Canadian Idol episode on Tuesdays, but reading that Tom Jones was the mentor this week dimmed my excitement a bit. Then, the theme is top ten UK hits? We've slipped quite a bit from David Bowie week, haven't we Canada?

I don't really want to listen to the music, and I'm not heading to Winnipeg to catch the tour, but this week solidified my adoration for Canadian Idol. Case in point: Americans had to suffer through Andrew Lloyd Webber week, while our Canadian counterparts were treated to the emotional core of popular music—dead people. Sure, the producers fancied up the proceedings by calling the theme of last night's episode "Rock and Roll Heaven," but a week dedicated to musicians who have nothing in common besides the fact that they're no longer alive still reaches new heights of tasteless spectacle. Well played, Canadians.

There are moments when I really think Canada is cooler than these United States, like when I dig out my Eric's Trip discs to have something to listen to as I write out the check that pays for my health insurance. However, last night's Canadian Idol was a mixed bag. Sure, the night was dedicated to the music of David Bowie, but as is sometimes the case with Idol tribute nights, the contestants got in the way.
