Blonde Bond Daniel Craig and cell phone pitchman Noel Gallagher got into the kind of fake celebrity spat that the British tabloids manufacture daily by using the patented system of drawing two celebrity names out of a hat, asking them about one another, and then creating a headline that seems salacious—“Daniel Craig baits Noel Gallagher over guitar skills jibe,” in this case–-until you read the story and realize that nothing all that interesting happened.
In this case, Craig was questioned at a movie premiere about Noel Gallagher’s assertion that Craig should play him in the (inevitable?) Oasis biopic. Craig said he was too old for the role (he’s one year younger in reality), and that, anyway, he was better at guitar. I did some digging to see if I could find 007 jamming out on the guitar, but I was met with crickets and tumbleweeds. (The British beefcake apparently does enjoy a game of Guitar Hero now and again, but that really ain’t the same thing.)

If there’s one thing we know about Jack White–besides his penchant for ugly facial hair–it’s that he loves money. Lucky for him the Coca-Cola corporation has plenty where that came from, and a massive cross-promotion deal with the new James Bond movie Quantum of Solace. White composed the music for a new Coke Zero/Quantum commercial, proving his corporate cred once and for all to the notoriously insular and judgmental Madison Avenue scene, which has long accused him of selling in.

Tabloid fixture and sometime singer Amy Winehouse has told a UK gossip columnist that even though her stab at a theme to the new James Bond movie, Quantum Of Solace, was rejected in favor of a collaboration between Jack White and Alicia Keys, she’s going to get it together enough to record the song anyway. Really!

File under things that are either going to be pretty OK or trainwrecky on a Converse sneaker-ad level: Jack White and Alicia Keys are going to collaborate on the theme song for the new James Bond movie, Quantum Of Solace, the first duet in Bond soundtrack history. More »

E! gossip Marc Malkin is claiming that Alicia Keys has won the race to provide a song for the next James Bond movie, a race that had previously been led by Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Annie Lennox. The movie is due out in November, and as of now Keys’ rep isn’t commenting, which, as we all know, means that she’s probably in the studio with Mark Ronson as I type this. But I’m kind of bummed out that recent Ronson collaborators Duran Duran were apparently also under consideration to write a new theme for the flick; even though Red Carpet Massacre was somewhat underwhelming, I’d have to think that being forced to revisit one of their finest moments would have wrung some sort of creative inspiration out of Simon, John, Roger, and Nick.

When Chris Cornell released his sink-like-a-stone theme song for the new James Bond movie this week, it proved what we’ve been saying for years: Duran Duran, we never know how good we had it with you. Ever since the early ’80s, the 007 franchise has been trotting out one unmemorable opening-credits number after another, prompting us to compile this YouTube-assisted list of the most egregious offenders. It will leave you shaken, stirred, and pining for the glory days of Shirley Bassey.
