In an effort to promote their just-out (and quite good) Won't Be Your Kept Woman EP, the band has released a mixtape by occasional member Sammy Bananas. It mixes the band's own music with a ton of thoroughly enjoyable tracks by other artists (Prince, George Michael, Janet Jackson), and it's so far been successful at pushing back the invading forces of winter gloom. Plus, the mix features a snippet of JC Chasez's lost classic "Blowin' Me Up," although I wonder if that was included just to woo Maura. [Official site]

<![CDATA[ JC Chasez has been making the talk show ... ]]> JC Chasez has been making the talk show rounds these past couple of days, because everyone wants to know who he is or isn't sleeping with. I know that arguing for this is futile in 2008's fame-for-fame's-sake-and-nothing-else world, but if one morning-radio joker out there who's reading could maybe take the time to slip in a question about whether or not he's actually going to release any music ever again, I would be much obliged. (And who knows, maybe he won't be so pissy when you go back to the sex questions! Honey instead of vinegar, etc.) [Defamer / Photo: AP]

<![CDATA[The Year In Dropped Artists: Hold On To Your Amerie Imports]]> As a sort of companion piece to the news that Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard had been dropped from J, Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider blog ran a list of acts that had been dropped by/defected from major labels in 2007 last week. Frankly, I'm surprised that it isn't about a mile longer, even though it does run the gamut from on-to-better-things artists (the White Stripes, Radiohead) to bands that seem to have hard luck follow them wherever they go (Mooney Suzuki, Blood Brothers). Full list after the jump.

THE GOOD: This is a pretty depressing list overall, but perhaps Liz Phair getting dropped by her label will make her think twice before recording her next ode to getting down with the Kotaku set, "Mii And You (Pushin' My Trigger Button)."
THE BAD: After all that will-it-or-won't-it-come-out? drama, it looks like Amerie has been dropped from Sony, thus leaving the status of Because I Love It's US release date more unknown than ever. Here's hoping she'll make a second mix tape.
THE WHAAA? It's not about the list per se, but the comment section of the EW post has turned into a kinda crazy-ass pissing match between JC Chasez fans and Bo Bice diehards. I mean I loved "Until Yesterday" probably more than anyone else, but really?

<![CDATA[Today In Scrapped-Album Rumors: Will JC Chasez Ever Introduce Us To "Kate"?]]> until.JPGWe dropped by the MySpace page of ex-'N Sync member JC Chasez just now—we wanted to see if he had any "so long, sucker" messages for ex-mentor Lou Pearlman—and what we saw concerned us. Those of you who have been reading Idolator for a while know that JC's collaboration with ex-bandmate Justin Timberlake, "Until Yesterday," topped one of our singles ballots for 2006; the album it's supposed to appear on, tentatively called Kate, has been delayed so much, JC is starting to look like Kelly Rowland. And the future of that album is looking even more bleak, from the looks of some fresh comments on JC's page; a typical one read like this:

AND NOW JIVE IS CANCELLING JC ALBUM! I WAITED MONTHS TO HEAR THE CD AND HEAR THE SINGLES ON Z100 and IT NEVER HAPPENED!!!

Sics aside, what's going on? Any ideas?

<![CDATA[The Coulda-Shoulda-Woulda Files: Seriously, You Have To Hear This JC Chasez Song]]> until.JPGJust in time for year-end lists to come due, this edition of the Coulda-Shoulda-Woulda Files looks at a song that will top at least one of your Idolators' 2006 singles charts.

Artist: JC Chasez
Song: "Until Yesterday," 2006
What happened: Co-written by Chasez's ex-boybandmate Justin Timberlake, "Until Yesterday" made crowds at Timberlake's club shows earlier this fall go absolutely crazy. We first heard—and went bananas for—the song a few weeks later; in October, it was released as a digital single, and it went to radio last month. Alas, it hasn't done much, aside from inspiring fervent reviews from Chasez's iTunes-enabled fans.
Why it should have been a hit: All those raves that we had for "Until Yesterday" in September? We're sticking by them. This song is just an over-the-top masterpiece, and it gets us singing along—clunky lyrics and all—every time we replay it. We're looking at the Billboard Hot 100 right now, and we can count at least five songs in the top 10 that can't hold this track's jock. Can't Justin help his pal out somehow? You know, for the holidays and all?

<![CDATA[Idolator Goes Radio Ga Ga For JC Chasez's New Single]]> jc.jpg JC Chasez is pretty much absolved for his boy-band sins for two reasons: his idea to sample Pac-Man on N'Sync's "The Game Is Over" and his over-the-top turn on the Basement Jaxx's "Plug It In." (We'll even forgive him for his dalliance with Tara Reid.) Now, we have "Until Yesterday," which was co-written with ex-bandmate Justin Timberlake. It's a doozy—prepare yourself for a stomping take on the power ballad, complete with sorta corny lyrics, a Freddie Mercury-channeling backing choir, military drums, and a fist-raising run-up to the final chorus.
