Michael Jackson Is Top-Earning Dead Celebrity, Says ‘Forbes’

Wed Oct 26 2011 by Robbie Daw
As the trial of Michael Jackson's former doctor Conrad Murray wears on, Forbes reports that the onetime King Of Pop is #1 on the publication's annual list of Top-Earning Dead Celebrities. It's the second year in a row the music legend has topped the list, though Forbes points out that the $170 million his estate raked in over the past 12 months, via sales of his music and his stake in the Sony/ATV catalog, is a steep drop from the $275 million that landed Jackson at #1 on last year's tally. Amy Winehouse Gets Mashed Up In The Jane Doze’s “Forever 27″: Idolator Premiere

Fri Aug 12 2011 by Becky Bain
Amy Winehouse' death at the age of 27, by many accounts, carried with it a grim familiarity. By coincidence or not, Winehouse joined the ranks of "The 27 Club", grouped for eternity with other remarkable musicians who passed before their time. The Jane Doze, a female DJ duo based in New York City, decided to celebrate the music of the club's impressive mix of artists by creating a mashup using samples from their songs. Head below for Idolator's exclusive premiere of the duo's "Forever 27". More »

Amy Winehouse Joins Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, And More In The Ill-Fated 27 Club

Sat Jul 23 2011 by Idolator Staff

For the superstitious, "13" is considered the unluckiest number. But if you're an adored and acclaimed musician, that number is 27. There's already a morbid moniker for the group of talented but troubled performers who expired long before their prime — "The 27 Club." And now, tragically, the club has its newest member. Already eerily populated by such legendary artists as Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, an untimely death at 27 seems reserved for only the most unique, gifted, and tormented of stars — and the esteemed and beloved Amy Winehouse was certainly that. Andre 3000 May Play Jimi Hendrix, Has Jason Derulo To Thank

Thu Jul 7 2011 by Becky Bain
Andre 3000 is no stranger to the acting world — he's appeared on TV shows like The Shield, in the Will Ferrell comedy Semi-Pro and even starred in the musical Prohibition-era Idlewild. But the "Party"-goer's next project could be a doozy - the Outkast man is reportedly playing Jimi Hendrix in an independently-made biopic of the artist's life. Interesting, since that is the exact same part that Jason Derulo claims he turned down! More »

Kanye West Would Like To Offer Up A New Celebrity Taxonomy

Wed May 20 2009 by Maura

In the midst of praising a sort of mediocre, but I guess well-framed paparazzi photo of Rihanna, Kanye West took some time out to offer up his thoughts on today’s biggest stars, and which current celebrities were serving as analogies of stars gone by, I guess because we live in the post-everything age. If you ever wondered which current somewhat-superstar Kanye West views as the new Jimi Hendrix and/or Roger Waters, the answers lie after the jump. More »

“I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging. : ),” says Erika Iris Simmons of her art project Ghost In The Machine–in which portraits of musicians are crafted from the innards of cassettes–and you know, she might have a point. Simmons has crafted images of musicians like Ian Astbury and Tom Waits out of this pretty ingenious source material, but my favorite one has to be Robert Smith, because his hair looks absolutely perfect. Why Music Biopics Never Get Mastered

Thu Nov 20 2008 by Lucas Jensen

Remember that Iggy Pop biopic starring Elijah Wood? That Marvin Gaye biopic starring the guy from Law & Order? Kirsten Dunst playing Debbie Harry? Zooey Deschanel (or was it Melissa Etheridge) as Janis Joplin? Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix? Lenny Kravitz as Hendrix? What about Laurence Fishburne as Hendrix? You probably remember none of those movies, because after tons of buzz, they all faded away into the veritable Bermuda Triangle that is music-biopic development. Why do so few music biopics actually make it through development, when they usually go onto success and acclaim, whether they’re put out by Hollywood (Ray, Walk The Line) or indies (24 Hour Party People)? Variety lays it out.

Puns used in headines about the first guitar Jimi Hendrix torched onstage going for some $493,000 at an auction in London yesterday: “fire sale,” “flaming bargain,” “purple blaze.” Somehow, no one thought to turn their story into a commentary on standing next to the aftermath of Hendrix’s fire.
