NPR’s Songs of the Decade, From Boy Bands to ‘Single Ladies’

toxicYou already know the end of the year/decade will bring no shortage of best-of lists from perfectly nice people who still think it’s all about the Strokes or Neko Case. But the most interesting decade-in-review feature we’ve seen yet isn’t a countdown—it’s just a smart look back at the biggest hits of the decade by the whiz kids over at NPR.

For the last two weeks, the music crew that puts together NPR’s Song of the Day segment, has taken a smart look back at the best and brightest in pop smashes from the aughts – one song and one year at a time. Check out their ten picks for the songs that summed up the 00’s, complete with a brief write-up (full song-by-song analysis can be seen at the source). Apologies to those with an aversion to Britney Spears and Idol alumni: this just wasn’t your time. MORE »

In “Maybe The Concert Industry Is Just As Screwed As The Recorded-Music Biz” news, the promoter of next week’s Phoenix shows by Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab For Cutie is offering last-minute discounts on tickets, despite both acts selling out the same venues on their last tour stops here. MORE »

How big is the Dodge Theater in Phoenix? As much as I love Jimmy Eat World, probably no way they can fill it up (considering Stone Temple Pilots are playing the same venue and also can't fill it up).

Artists need to stop listening to all the yes-men around them. There are so many shows I've been to that are WAY undersold. Or, so many shows I don't go to because the ticket price is just too high. I'd love to know which genius thought it was a good idea to have Marilyn Manson play TWO nights at Hammerstein Ballroom (5000 capacity) here in NYC and then charge $64 (+convenience fee+building facility+printing fee+complimentary kick in the balls).

NOTE TO ANY BANDS WHO MAY READ THIS SITE (and be so bored you scroll down to comments section): Don't book two nights right away. Book one, if it sells out fast, book another, if it sells out but just barely, keep it that. Not worth the dough to play two half-sold nights.

Jimmy Eat World Nostalgic For Late 2001, Platinum Sales

jimmy_eat_world.jpgPopular albums are sometimes quickly re-issued as “special editions” with a new cover and some bonus crap. Labels sometimes overhaul career catalogs and drop double-disc reissues celebrating the 10th and 20th anniversaries of classic albums. But what do you make of it when Jimmy Eat World takes Bleed American, an album released in 2001, and gives it the “now with a bonus disc featuring demos and b-sides!” treatment? Especially when they just put out a new album, Chase The Light, last October? Guess A&R doesn’t hear another single on that one. MORE »

@HomefrontRadio: You must not listen to alternative rock stations, huh?

This band has several songs that have been played in heavy rotation.

The Gremlins (Jimmy) Eat (World) After Midnight

Top 5 things about this video: 1.) Ravenous gremlin saliva. 2.) Mrs. Deagle getting her comeuppance. (Shades of Inland Empire in the close-up!) 3.) Caroling emo gremlin chorus. 4.) Gizmo’s self-satisfied smirk when he finds himself unable to drive 55. 5.) MORE »

Great movie.

The Worst Album Cover Of The Year Tournament Faces The <s>Music</s> Plumage

facedowninthemetaphor.jpgFor the second entry in today’s Anatomically Incorrect bracket, we have pop emo godfathers Jimmy Eat World and their bald feathered metaphor for the place where babies come from (or out of) facing off (omg lol) against Bow Wow and Omarion’s collaborative efforts at facial reconstruction. Decide whether it’s two-in-the-face or one in the “bush” after the jump! MORE »

Bluetones FTW.

Jimmy Eat World Plays Catch-Up With The Pop-Emo Generation

jimmyeatme.jpgARTIST: Jimmy Eat World
TITLE: Chase This Light
WEB DEBUT: Oct. 1, 2007
RELEASE DATE: Oct. 16, 2007 MORE »

Dude, you totally dropped the ball. Clarity came out in 1999 and was the ultimate predecessor for everything any of these crappy bands have produced. You can't mention emo-pop and Jimmy Eat World without talking about Clarity. Bleed American was their attempt to write mainstream top 40 hits. Clarity was the record they cried themselves to sleep to every night while lingering in the catchy hooks.

The Cover-Song Showcase Showdown: Wrapping Up “Last Christmas”

Now that it’s the season for “Last Christmas,” the 1984 Yuletide lament by Wham!, to blare from public loudspeakers all over the land, we figured the time was right to stage a Cover-Song Showcase Showdown for the song. MORE »
