Paul McCartney Is Being Very Charitable To Duffy

Come November, the UK charity War Child will release a new all-covers album, Heroes, as a way to raise funds for its efforts to protect children in conflict-ravaged areas around the globe. So far, the tracklisting is as such: Duffy covering "Live & Let Die"; Hot Chip re-recording Joy Division's "Transmission"; Beck taking on Bob Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat"; the Kooks doing whatever it is they do to the Kinks' "Victoria"; and Rufus Wainwright constructing a medley from two songs off Brian Wilson's Smile. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Wainwright track is the one that piques my interest most; while Paul McCartney said that Duffy's version of the Wings track was "great—I was really impressed," I'm a bit, shall we say, skeptical. I get that she's cute and can rock a romper onstage, but how much longer must we all suffer through this "next Dusty" charade? (And who picked her to be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this week, anyway? Is this season's musical theme "artists who don't sound that great live, but it's OK because our crummy sound tech prevents even the best bands from sounding any good at all, ever?") [Billboard]

The memorial stone at Ian Curtis' grave, which features the phrase "Love Will Tear Us Apart," has been stolen from Macclesfield Cemetery in Cheshire, England. For all the biopics, documentaries, re-releases and ancillary merchandise, this is the kind of incident that makes it official: Ian Curtis is the new Jim Morrison. [BBC]

Malcolm McLaren To Unite Captain, Tennille, And Curtis In Times Square

The New York Daily News' item on Malcolm McLaren's current art installation on the MTV building focuses on its porny aspects: "What you see is not people having sex but people about to have it.... I was interested in the body language of nonactors, how they communicated their longing," McLaren tells the News' Rush and/or Molloy of his piece, which uses clips culled from stag movies of days gone by. But of interest to me is the music accompanying it, which passerby can hear if they call a phone number running across the screen: McLaren is scoring the film with his stunning blend of the Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which I first heard when Peter Hook spun it at an otherwise awful afterparty* for a New Order show a few years back and which is still spine-chilling to listen to. A stream of the track is after the jump. More »

Joy Division rocked futilely in the face of a cold, uncaring world before its leader could take it no longer. The good people at Zune can relate to that tragic spirit, and are celebrating the band with a limited edition Zune player that reuses the artwork Peter Saville created for Unknown Pleasures. "It's a tribute to deep respect for graphic design that lives on through artists like Peter Saville, and to independent film-makers that believe in more than just commercial success. Ultimately, it's a tribute to the self-belief and self-expression that inspires true authentic art," said Zune's General Manager of Global Marketing. Much like Factory Too. [SPIN]

Today's "Extreme Bravery In The Face Of Imminent Flaming" Award: "This also happened when I recently heard Joy Division for the first time, and honestly thought, 'wow, they really are just like Interpol—only not as good.' " [Aquemini]

I do not agree with this list of the "11 Best Joy Division Songs," but hey, it does have audio for three of my favorites. (If you have anything other than "Transmission" at No. 1, then you mad.) Did I mention the one thing I wanted to do while in NYC for CMJ was see Control? Did I mention the one thing I forgot to do while in NYC for CMJ? [Good Bad Unknown]

Ed. note: It's time for another installment of "VHS Or Beta?", where Andy Beta looks at the music behind the movies—from preserved-by-Criterion classics to completely inane summer blockbusters. In this installment, he watches the Anton Corbijn-directed Control, which opens in select cities on Wednesday: More »

Leak Of The Day: The Killers Suck The Joy Out of Joy Division

The Music Slut has an MP3 of the Killers covering "Shadowplay," the classic 1979 Joy Division track. This version supposedly plays during the closing credits of the upcoming Anton Corbijn-directed Control, which is good, because if it came any earlier in the film, we'd probably walk out. Let's just say that we spent a good ten minutes working on a "Please Brandon, Don't Curtis" headline pun, until we realized it wasn't worth the effort: More »
