Justin Bieber And Drake Skype, Sing Sarah McLachlan In Juno Awards Intro

Mon Mar 28 2011 by Robbie Daw
Toronto native Drake hosted Canada's 2011 Juno Awards, but despite his six nominations, he was shut out from winning. He did, however, score with a fun opening skit that found him Skyping with his pal and fellow Canuck Justin Bieber (who picked up Pop Album Of The Year and Fan Choice statues). The Biebz admits his penchant for Sarah McLachlan, and he and Drizzy sing a few heartfelt lines from her Brothers McMullen ballad "I Will Remember You." Oh, Canada... More »

The JUNO Awards, aka the Canadian Grammys, are bound to get some extra international attention this year in the form of tween girls screaming from across the globe: ever-maturing pop sensation Justin Bieber is nominated for four awards in his home country, including  Album Of The Year and Artist Of The Year. He'll have to compete in both those categories against Nicki Minaj's video hubby Drake, who leads the pack with six nominations total. Check out all the nominees here, eh?

Drake Raps On Justin Bieber’s Acoustic “Baby” At The Juno Awards

Mon Apr 19 2010 by Robbie Daw
Michael Buble may have been the big winner at Canada's 2010 Juno Awards (he picked up Single Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Pop Album Of The Year and the Juno Fan Choice Award), but it was expert hair-flipper Justin Bieber who got all the tween Canucks screaming with his performance of "Baby." Surprising the audience during the special acoustic rendition was none other than New Artist Of The Year winner Drake, who added his own rap to the Bieb's smash hit. Watch that and a few other 2010 Juno Awards performances after the jump. More »

Nickelback: Your Slightly Terrifying Face Of Canadian Rock

Mon Mar 30 2009 by Maura

Canadian heshers Nickelback took home Album Of The Year, Group Of The Year, and the Juno Fan Choice Award at last night’s Juno Awards, which reward the best that Canadian music has to offer. (Gene Simmons is probably very, very excited right now.) Other winners: The sinewy Kardinal Offishall/Akon collab “Dangerous,” which won Single Of The Year; Alanis Morrissette, whose Flavors Of Entanglement picked up the Pop Album trophy; and the Stills, who brought home New Group of the Year and the Alternative Album award. Full list of winners after the jump.

The Juno Award Nominations Provide A Stark Reminder Of Nickelback’s CanCon Status

Tue Feb 3 2009 by Maura

Nominations for the Juno Awards—the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ equivalent to the Grammys—were announced today, and the big winner was the Vancouver band of heshers Nickelback, who are up for five prizes including Single Of The Year and Album Of The Year; personal favorites like Black Mountain and Sloan, as well as that deliciously inescapable Kardinal Offishall/Akon track from last summer, got nods as well. I’m sure Gene Simmons is studying this list very closely right now, trying to figure out what works in the Great White North. (Perhaps he should try and find a Guns N’ Roses tribute band up there, since CARAS had the balls to nominate Chinese Democracy for International Album Of The Year.) Partial list of nominees after the jump.

The 2008 Juno Awards: Avril, Profanities, Feist, Christmas Albums, And A Dude Named Belly

Tue Feb 5 2008 by Jess Harvell

The announcement of the nominees for the 2008 Juno Awards–”Canada’s Music Awards”–makes us wonder: Why do the Junos slay the Grammys this year? Well, it’s because we don’t actually have to live-blog the broadcast, where the canned dialogue will probably be less awkward but feature just as many quasi-celebrities tsk-tsk’ing us over illegal downloading. And it’s also because they’ve brought together neo-krautrockers Holy Fuck and Tom “Life Is A Highway” Cochrane for the first (and likely last) time. (And the fact that Cochrane and Neil Young are apparently “adult alternative” now.) And it’s also also because the nominees for “Best International Album” seem chosen specifically for their SoundScan numbers. (The Josh Groban Christmas album??) And it’s also also also because the nominees include a band called God Made Me Funky and a rapper named Belly. And it’s definitely also also also also because it’s an awards ceremony where Leslie Feist is for once not up against indie rock bands and crossover dubstep producers, but Celine Dion. And Michael Bublé. And Avril. Which seems more, we dunno, fitting. (Speaking of Avril: we guess that out-of-court settlement with the Rubinoos means there’s nothing hinky with Lukasz Gottwald being nominated for “Songwriter Of The Year” for Avril’s “Girlfriend.”) Too many categories to list in full, but we’ve included some of our favorite match-ups after the jump.
