Kelis Is Radioactive

2:28 PM on Wed Mar 10 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman

Check out the latest pic uploaded to Kelis' Facebook page from yet to be released photo shoot by photographer Rankin.  She's absolutely glowing—in the dark. We tip our hats to the nail technician who gave Kelis this spectacular black light-friendly manicure, which fits the vibe of her upcoming elctro album perfectly. Kelis' fancy nails are almost breathtaking enough to distract from her atrocious mullet. What do you think? Is this photo enough to make you click "Like"? Throw us your comments below.

T-Pain’s Animated Musical ‘Freaknik’—Only 75% Auto-Tuned

5:40 PM on Fri Feb 12 2010 by Becky Bain
For a while we thought there was a chance that T-Pain might just throw his top hat in the ring to become a college president, but now it looks like he's ternt his attention to ... animated musicals? Of course. Tallahassee's favorite rapper is producing and taking a role in Freaknik:The Musical, a one-hour special that will air on The Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block in March. T-Pain will play "a party ghost" in the show, which also includes the voice talents of Lil Wayne, Kelis, Lil Jon, Big Boi, Snoop Dogg, Pain's boating buddy Andy Samberg and more. (Sadly, once again, Kanye wasn't invited to the party.) Colorful/seizure-inducing trailer below. More »

Kelis Or Chris Brown—Who Did “They Say” Better?

12:56 PM on Fri Jan 29 2010 by Becky Bain
Two versions of the same dance track, "They Say," surfaced this week, one recorded by house music aficionado Kelis and the other by Chris Brown. Kelis (who showed up to the Data Awards last night looking like something out of Fantasia) was the first to record a demo of the song, but it ultimately ended up going to Brown as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of Graffiti. Should Kelis have hung onto "They Say," or did Chris earn it by recording a superior version? Listen to both versions after the jump and decide for yourself: More »

Kelis and David Guetta Reteam For House Jam “Scream & Shout”

11:27 AM on Thu Jan 28 2010 by Becky Bain
When we spoke to Grammy nominated DJ and producer David Guetta earlier this week, he mentioned he was working on another song for Kelis' upcoming album Flesh Tones, but the track wasn't completed yet. "I didn’t finish it," he told us with a chuckle. "They’re waiting for me, actually! I feel bad." If the newly surfaced "Scream & Shout" is the unfinished track Guetta was talking about, then the man is one hell of an incredibly fast worker. Hear the electro jam after the jump. More »

David Guetta: The Idolator Interview

1:48 PM on Wed Jan 27 2010 by Robbie Daw
The Grammy countdown has begun, and five-time nominee David Guetta is gearing up for a flight from Paris to L.A. "I'm going to go eat, pack and take the plane," he tells Idolator while in transit. "I made a few tracks, because every time I'm in Los Angeles I'm meeting artists. So I'll have a little bit of a studio session and then the awards."

Guetta's global floorfiller "When Love Takes Over," which features a booming Kelly Rowland on vocals, is up for Best Dance Recording and Best Remixed Recording, while his LP One Love snagged a nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album. But the sought-after French DJ has earned acclaim far beyond clubland and the Academy’s dance audience: he also received a Record Of The Year nod for producing the Black Eyed Peas' inescapable radio hit "I Gotta Feeling," and thus could also share in the wealth if the band wins a statue for Album Of The Year for The E.N.D.

Guetta, who recently whipped up material for Madonna's upcoming album, explains that what he loves about working with such varied artists "is that our music can reach people that are not even from hip hop or electro" scenes. "It's just music that touches your soul." And now he says he and the Black Eyed Peas have yet another "I Gotta Feeling"-sized smash waiting in the wings. The Idolator Interview: Kelis

2:57 PM on Mon Dec 14 2009 by Robbie Daw

It’s been a colorful ten years since Kelis released her debut album Kaleidoscope. In that time, the singer scored big stateside with sassy anthems like “Milkshake” and “Bossy”, landed even more hits overseas (”Trick Me,” “Lil Star”), married rapper Nas and became one of pop and R&B’s most edgy, offbeat artists.

But with Kelis’ edginess came a dislocation from standard genre definitions, which made it tough for the music biz to market her through its usual channels. She was eventually released from her label in 2007. Then, earlier this year, the singer filed from divorce from Nas while seven months pregnant with their son, Knight.

“I took some time off,” Kelis says. “I really just shut down, even to the point where I was like, I don’t want to sing anymore. I went to culinary school and just regrouped and got my heart back for it.”

After being signed to will.i.am Music Group/Interscope, Kelis premiered a new David Guetta-produced song, “Acapella,” on her official site last month. She also became a certified saucier after taking culinary classes at the famed Le Cordon Bleu.

“I love the lifestyle of a great meal,” she tells Idolator. “I think food and fashion and music all go together when it’s done right.”

Read on to see how Kelis got her groove back, and what we can expect from her musically in 2010. More »

Last week Kelis made the world privvy to her David Guetta-produced dance track “Acapella” (not to mention her silver-fox mullet) via her website. But it turns out the “Bossy” babe won’t have to shill her entire new album by herself. More »
