It's Legal Again To Turn Bits Of Kraftwerk Into Lousy German Rap Tracks

An appeals court in Berlin has overturned a lower court's decision that producer Moses Pelham was in the wrong for sampling two seconds of Kraftwerk's "Metal on Metal" on a 1997 track. The ruling sends the case back down to a lower court, although you have to think somewhere Gregg Gillis is celebrating. The higher court stated that the amount of the song sampled was insignificant, and that the sample was used in a manner significantly different than the original track. What difference does this make in the long run? Probably not much, although if you listen to the track "Metal On Metal" was part of against Kraftwerk's will (both tracks are below the cut), you might understand why those robots were pissed. Elbot The Robot And I Discuss "Chinese Democracy" One Last Time

Given that Chinese Democracy is streaming and leaking, I decided to seek out opinions on the album from the only people to turn to in these turbulent times: robots. I've already talked to German Artificial Intelligence Elbot, and chatbot nightmare SmarterChild about the prospects of Chinese Democracy actually coming out. As the prospect of talking to SmarterChild again makes me hate my ancestors for their involvement in my birth, I returned to my only marginally less-annoying pal Elbot to ask him what he thought about the album. It was as successful as last time, which is to say it made me hate science. At least we found out we both like Kraftwerk! More »

Oh, And Both Portishead and Kraftwerk, who played before Prince, managed to fill Coachella's huge outdoor space with arresting music and incredible visuals—I'd last seen Kraftwerk ten years ago at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, and I'd forgotten just how striking the tableau presented by the simple pieces of art and their stock-still figures was, while Portishead used the giant space to do their show on Thursday night one better, thanks to the giant Beth-on-Beth images provided by the screens flanking the mainstage. (Audio here.) But were the planes flying overhead that had ads for upcoming albums (by Cut Copy, Robyn, and Elbow, among others) running LED-style across the bottom of their wings really a good use of jet fuel? I understand that "annoyvertising" is super-good at emblazoning things on the brains of people who are within its immediate sphere, but the one thing I really wanted to do last night was listen to Portishead's set while staring up at the stars. And the constant ads kind of killed my chance to do that (and seemed more than a little misguided, given that most of the people in the crowd were probably in the "illegal acquirer" demographic anyway). Boooo. [Photo: AP]

FINALLY, A CHANCE TO PUT THAT DEUTSCHE MARK PAYPAL ACCOUNT TO WORK Music Thing has located one of the coolest eBay auctions in a long while: Kraftwerk's original vocoder. At a mere $5,000, it's the perfect gift for anyone who loves making creepily futuristic crank calls.
