The Oscars' Best Song Winner: After These Messages, We'll Make You Say "Awwwww"

Even if "Falling Slowly," Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's Oscar-winning song from Once, is a little too tepid to be your cup of tea, you have to admit that Jon Stewart bringing Irglova out to give her acceptance speech after the commercial break was a pretty sweet moment, and not even in the "insufferably twee" kind of way that would have probably resulted from a victory by one of the Enchanted songs. (Clip via Defamer.) Plus, the whole thing reminded me how much I liked the quiet, yet intense 2001 album from Hansard's band the Frames, the Steve Albini-engineered For The Birds. After the jump, the Day of the Dead-themed video for that album's track "Lay Me Down": More »

Kanye West's Grammy Staredown

While accepting the award for Best Rap Album at last night's Grammys, Kanye West gave a clinic in How To Make The Producers Stop Playing You Off When You Still Have About Half Of Your Acceptance Speech To Get Through. Of course, the fact that he was paying tribute to his deceased mother probably helped him win sympathy points from the showrunners, a fact that's making me wonder just how many lengthy acceptance speeches at the upcoming Oscars are going to be puncutated by well-timed tributes to family members who passed away "recently."

Robyn Will Gladly Jack U Off

Not to be one of those douchey "I live in New York and OMG I get to go to everything" bloggers, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that last night I saw the first American show by Swedish teenpop star-turned-bloggers' delight Robyn, and my reaction can be summed up by this IM that I got from a friend also in attendance: "Robyn: awesome or AWESOME!!! ?" The answer, of course, is "both, duh!" This surprisingly decent phonecam video of her take on Prince's "Jack U Off"—part of her three-song encore, which also included a reworking of her 10-plus-years-old hit "Show Me Love"—is a little grainy and there's some dude who starts jabbering away at 1:46, but it captures the frenzy that she whipped the crowd into pretty well, and I only hope that she becomes enough of a pop star that everyone reading this will someday have the chance to witness this particular spectacle in person as well. Tom Petty's Completely Passable, If Somewhat Snoozeworthy Halftime Show

Raise your hand if you thought Tom Petty's halftime show was, well, fine, although the momentum of it was killed by stacking two midtempo songs right in the middle. (Perhaps Fox nixed "Refugee" for being too political?) And keep it raised if you were the person at your party who said, "Hey, that's weird that they billed him as playing with the Heartbreakers, since 75% of the material was from his billed-as-a-solo album Full Moon Fever." Or the person who said, "Wait, didn't he use this song to advertise for the NBA a few years ago?" OK, hands down. More »

Alicia Keys Breaks Out The Air Horns

Downing many beers during the first hour of the American Music Awards live-blog last night to dull the pain made me a little sleepy, even if I was in no way as out of it as 90 percent of the performers and presenters. But I snapped back during the only real highlight-cum-spectacle of the evening that didn't involve boggling at Chris Brown's Tron costume, where Alicia Keys proved that the best way to sell ersatz reggae during one of the cheesiest events of the year is by turning your performance into a celebration of late '80s and '90s dancehall, squeezing in Junior Reid, Chaka Demus and Pliers, and Beenie Man for an air-horn happy medley of their most iconic hits. Probably the first time "Murder She Wrote" has been heard on American awards show in some time, and sadly probably the last, since you could almost hear the rest of the country wondering where Daughtry was already.

Jonas Brother Sends An S.O.S. Out To The American Music Awards' Set Designer

If you missed the American Music Awards performance by Disney Channel stars-in-waiting the Jonas Brothers, not only did you miss the one moment of the show where the audience seemed excited to be watching—thanks to a truckload of hormonal preteens being shuttled in for the duration of the Brothers' spunky "S.O.S."—you missed its one spontaneous moment, which was brought to you by Joe "The Middle One" Jonas tripping and falling on the shattered glass that heralded his and his brothers' arrival onstage. Not only should Joe be proud of his pretty much instantaneous recovery—he didn't even have to drop his tambourine to spring up!—he should be very, very thankful that his brother's lyrics didn't compare his bad relationships to walking into a pit of poisonous snakes.

Courtney Love Apparently Ceding The "Crazy, Crazy Show" Badge Of Honor To Deerhunter

"All in all, it was a good show if not a bit disappointing for the lack of crazy antics. If you were a hard-core Hole fan, you probably loved it. If not, you were probably like 'what the hell is this bitch screaming about?'" said the blogger Brewed Fresh, who attended last night's Courtney Love show at Hiro Ballroom. The picture actually caused us to come up with a different question: A vest? Did Courtney get access to Fergie's Kohl's stash before the show? More »
