So it stands to reason that "Big Ideas," LCD's new single from the soundtrack of the Vegas movie 21, is something of an homage to a well-known dance classic by a group LCD can't seem to stop making reference to. Still, we couldn't help thinking the video's set reminded us of a different, yet equally classic, dance-music video, as you can see below.

The "Village Voice" Remembers Amy Winehouse Put Out A Record In The Last 24 Months 51KKXi6JM5L._AA240_.jpgWell, that's it. Tag it and bag it. Unless I happen to notice a late-breaking entry from the Burlington Community Times tomorrow while getting my coffee, the publication of the Village Voice's Pazz And Jop poll marks the last of 2007's year-end lists, headed up by LCD Soundsystem (album) and Amy Winehouse (singles). Now let us never speak of either again.

THE GOOD: 2007 is over! Also Feist and Wilco were both kept out of the albums Top 10, plus an honestly surprising, kinda heartening Winehouse-over-Rihanna singles upset, if only by 4 mentions. (And even if No. 2 Rihanna spanked No. 3 "All My Friends" by a whopping 32 mentions.)
THE BAD: As with the Idolator Pop Critics Poll, Peter Bjorn and John earn a Top 10 placing on the singles list despite the evil "Young Folks" first whistling its way into our lives in 2006. Damned twee Swedes.
THE WHAAAA? Radiohead beats M.I.A. to the No. 2 albums spot despite an equal number of points, thanks to four more ballot mentions that break the tie. Not quite fraud at the polls, but clearly the electoral college is not the only voting system that needs reforming.

P.S. Psyche. Full lists not after the jump. Feel free to check out the results and come back here to argue them. Or not. It's 2008 and we have plenty of Hannah Montana stories new things to discuss, even if I'm not 100 percent sure what they are yet. Maybe we'll find out it was Rockwell that really killed Heath Ledger or Courtney Love will put out an album where every song features the Soulja Boy "YAHH!" or the bottom will drop out of Web 2.0 and we'll all be forced to get real jobs. This year's gonna be silly, I just know it.

Project X Pits The Family Against The Critics As part of Idolator's continuing effort to geekily analyze every music chart known to man, we present a new edition of Project X, in which Jackin' Pop editor Michaelangelo Matos breaks down rankings from every genre imaginable. After the click-through, he [hilariously] examines the results of the Idolator Pop Critics Poll Tracks Top 10 with some special help:

By now you've seen the critics' lists of the year's best music. But what about the folks who really count—the people? In interest of fairness and balance, I've decided to take the critics' choices to some regular folks. That's right: it's time once again for this column to exploit my family.

This time around, I played the 2007 Idolator Pop Critics Poll's Top 10 Tracks for my mom, my sisters, and my sister's friend who always comes over on major holidays. The listening session took place at my sister Brittany's apartment in Bloomington, Minnesota, on Christmas Eve, shortly after dinner and gifts (opening everything the night before is a longstanding family tradition). Also around were my sisters' very tolerant significant others, Brittany's daughter Veronica, and plenty of delicious leftovers. As usual, I typed everyone's responses on the fly and occasionally paused the songs to fill in gaps.

Dramatis Personae:
Lorie, mother, age 47; listens to Christmas music
Michael, author, age 32; listens to the Marc Anthony best-of Brittany got him for Christmas
Alex, sister, age 22; kicks everyone's ass at Guitar Hero III
Brittany, sister, age 21; listens to the M.I.A. and Billie Holiday CDs Michael got her for Christmas
Cherrelle, Brittany's best friend, age 21; listens to her Kanye West ringtone

1. Rihanna ft. Jay-Z, "Umbrella" (Def Jam) [117 votes]
Alex: You know this song, Veronica?
Brittany: She sings it all the time. Is it this version that's No. 1?
Michael: This is the main version.
Lorie: Is there any versions without rap?
Michael: No.
Lorie: [frowns]
Brittany: Would you dance to it, Mom?
Lorie: I can't dance to anything.
Alex: She can probably dance better than she can sing.
Brittany: She could probably play rugby better than she sings.
Alex: She used to put on—what was it, Mom?
Lorie: A show?
Brittany: Wilson Phillips!
Alex: And she used to sing into her bedpost: "Hold on for one more day . . . "
Lorie: Are you sure I was singing and not screaming? I was pole dancing.
Brittany: I'll scream if you say anything like that again.
[The stereo we are listening on is connected to the TV, on which a commercial for itt-tech.edu is airing]
Lorie: Is this the video? People performing surgery? I thought maybe instead of the little drapes they put over you they were using umbrellas now.
Brittany: Are you retarded, Mom?

2. LCD Soundsystem, "All My Friends" (Capitol) [89 votes]
Brittany: This reminds me of Schroeder—it kind of sounds like the Snoopy theme.
Michael: This is a song by LCD Soundsystem called "All My Friends."
Brittany: I wish I had a song about all my friends.
Alex: It'd be over by now.
Brittany: Michael, can you pass me that wine so I can drink my pain away?
Lorie: Good music. You couldn't hardly dance to it, though, could you? I could tell you what you could do to it, but not too many people could.
Alex: Not with you.
Lorie: No, by yourself!
Brittany: I think she's talking about cross-stitching. At least I hope so.
Michael: I'm surprised you guys like this so much; I thought the piano might turn you off. The song is basically about getting too old to party.
Alex: [immediately] No such thing!
Brittany: This is Alex's theme song in 10 years.
Lorie: It was my theme song 10 years ago.
Brittany: Fifty.
Alex: I want people to get drunk and karaoke at my funeral.
Brittany: [after talking to her boyfriend, who is from Mexico] Miguel thinks it's nice, too, and he doesn't speak English. [Author's note: He does too.] You know the twins on Peanuts who just jump? They could dance to this.
Lorie: I hope they play this at midnight mass tonight.
Michael: Why?
Lorie: So I can stay awake.

3. M.I.A., "Paper Planes" (Interscope) [66 votes]
Brittany: I've heard this. It's familiar. [The vocal comes in. Brittany holds up her just-unwrapped copy of Kala] It's her.
Lorie: I've heard this before.
Brittany: Where have you heard this?
Lorie: I've been listening to the radio. [chorus comes in] I wanna go to a bar!
Brittany: Is that what this reminds you of? The gunfire reminds you of the bars you go to? [turns attention back to music] I really like this. But it's so much different than, like, "Bucky Done Gun." You say you like this album more? But the last album was really different. She's more singing than shouting. Is she trying to be more mainstream? I think I could listen to this for longer periods of time if it's all like this. Miguel, how do you like this? The gunshot [in the chorus] reminds you of the border, doesn't it?

4. Amy Winehouse, "Rehab" (Republic) [60 votes]
Lorie: All right, hey! This is the suicidal one [Veronica] sings!
Brittany: No, that's Sean Kingston.
Lorie: Oh, I remember this song now. What happened to her?
Brittany: She's fucked up beyond words. This is kind of Christmassy. All the dysfunctional families can relate to this one at Christmas. [after the line, "I don't ever want to drink again"] You know, if drinking makes her sing like this, she should go ahead. I feel sorry for her, though. She has a lot of underlying issues, and it's so evident.

5. Justice, " D.A.N.C.E." (Vice) [54 votes]
Lorie: This sounds like the beginning of Romper Stomper Romper Room. You ever heard of that?
Michael: Sort of. Romper Room was the kids' show, and Romper Stomper is a movie about racist skinheads in Australia.
Brittany: I thought it sounded like schoolchildren but you brought that into a whole other light, didn't you, Mom? It's like "Rock with You," in the beat. They should put this on Dance Dance Revolution. That would be fun times.
Cherrelle: Romper Room sounds like a porno. This reminds me of the Jackson 5. I could listen to this, definitely.
Brittany: This would be fun to dance to . . .
Cherrelle: . . . If I was drunk.
Brittany: And you're drunk all the time!
Cherrelle: I should just start dancing.

6. Peter Bjorn & John, "Young Folks" (Almost Gold) [50 votes]
Lorie: Oh, I love this! [whistles along]
Brittany: How do you know this and I don't?
Michael: Where have you heard this?
Lorie: I heard it at work. I love that whistle part. It just grabs you right away.
Michael: This came out last year internationally, and did well on last year's poll, but it was released in America this year, which is why it placed again. It was a big crossover hit—Kanye West rhymed over it on a mixtape.
Cherrelle: Now, why do you wanna ruin a perfectly fine piece of music like this? He's been stepping out of his realm with that Daft Punk stuff.
Brittany: He's been taking a flying leap out of his realm with that.
Alex: I've heard this song before.
Brittany: Where did you hear it?
Alex: I don't remember.
Michael: It's a group called Peter Bjorn & John. They're Swedish.
Cherrelle: [to Alex] Well then, maybe you heard it at Ikea.

6. Battles, "Atlas" (Warp) [50 votes]
Brittany and Alex: [immediately] "The beautiful people, the beautiful people."
Brittany: It is! It totally is.
Michael: It's not.
Brittany: I hate to disagree with you, Michael. I didn't know Marilyn Manson was still making records. [vocals come in] They're singing it backwards; they're putting in subliminal satanic messages. We could do a ouija board to this.
Cherrelle: I couldn't listen to this alone. I'd need to turn all the lights in the house on. Let's have a séance. This is what Marilyn Manson makes love to.
Brittany: These are probably his kids. Hey, Alex, come over here and let me carve a pentagram into your arm.
[Lorie, in kitchen, drops a cake on her foot]
Brittany: See? This music fucked her up so bad she dropped a cake on the floor.
Alex: [growling] "Red rum. Red rum."
Brittany: Did you just say you were going to spin your head in a circle?
Michael: So, do you guys like this?
Brittany: I like it on Halloween.
Lorie: [calling in from kitchen] I'm scared to fucking death of this song!

8. UGK ft. OutKast, "Int'l Players Anthem (I Choose You)" (Jive) [49 votes]
[Michael restarts the song a couple times so the group can hear the first verse]
Cherrelle: He sounds like he's trying to be a pimp.
Michael: Sort of—-it's called "Int'l Players Anthem." But Andre 3000's verse is about getting married.
Brittany: Is he going to marry me? That's all I care about.
Cherrelle: I don't love that old crap in the background. It's like '60s gospel that my mother would listen to.
Brittany: I think that's your mother singing in the background.
[Second verse begins]
Cherrelle: I like how he's talking about marrying someone and saying "bitch" and "pussy."
Brittany: They're gonna get "bitch" and "pussy" engraved on their wedding rings.
Cherrelle: I like this guy's voice.
Michael: This is Pimp C, who recently died.
Cherrelle: Well, how you gonna hate on a dead man?
Michael: OK, this is Big Boi now.
Cherrelle: They're both tiny men.
Michael: Big Boi is much smaller than Andre.
Cherrelle: [to Brittany] Andre could wear your clothes.
Brittany: I'd let him. He can wear my clothes anytime.
Cherrelle: This is all starting to sound alike to me.
Brittany: [to Cherrelle, who's black] Racist.

9. Feist, "1234" (Cherrytree) [48 votes]
Brittany: [immediately, to opening strums] "The beautiful people . . . "
Alex: This is the video with all the kids all skipping rope. [imitates choreography]
Brittany: [after the line, "Teenage hopes arrive at your door"] "Teenage hoes"?
Cherrelle: She keeps saying "ho."
Brittany: Very Christmassy.
Cherrelle: [sings] "1-2-3-4, you a ho."
Brittany: [sings] "5-6-7-8, your momma's a ho too/9-10-11-12, your grandma's a ho, too."
Cherrelle: If we weren't so mean, this would probably be a nice song.
Brittany: If we weren't so fucking cynical, we could enjoy this. If we hadn't just listened to Marilyn Manson . . .

10. Kanye West, "Stronger" (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam) [35 votes]
Brittany and Cherrelle: [immediately] "Intergalactic, planetary, planetary, intergalactic . . . "
Cherrelle: I love this song.
Michael: Based on what you said earlier, I thought you didn't like it.
Brittany: No, I said I thought he took a flying leap out of his realm.
Michael: I misunderstood, then.
Cherrelle: Yeah, this is my ringtone.
Brittany: [deadpan] And that says a lot. You've really got to be a hardcore fan to have someone's song for a ringtone. And everybody turns around and says, "Hey, 'Stronger'! Let me holla at you!" [to Cherrelle] Does this ringtone make you stronger?
Cherrelle: [sardonically] I feel empowered. [song continues for awhile] I felt bad when his mom died.
Lorie: You know recently I just took a day off when my father's wife died.
Brittany: You know what's a big factor of why I don't like this song? Those awful fucking sunglasses with the blinds. They look retarded.
Cherrelle: You look like you have Down's Syndrome when you have them.
Brittany: Camp Courage sunglasses. [to Michael] Don't put that in there.
Michael: Can I please?
Brittany: If I get shanked for this, Michael, it's your fault.
Lorie: If you get shanked for this, I get a day off!

Pitchfork's Readers Loved In Rainbows So Much They Probably Even Paid For It Because 2007 still has a few weeks/months left to haunt us—Idolator Poll comin' soon, y'all!—we present (what might be) the last 2007 list in our Year-End Analysis feautre, one we almost forgot in our joy that the clocks had turned over at midnight on Jan. 1, and with that the promise that we might never again have to type the words "Neon Bible" between an italics tag into Movable Type: the Pitchfork readers' poll! And guess what? We had to type the words "Neon Bible" between an italics tag into Movable Type. As Pitchfork itself notes, their reader's Top 10 hews close to the site's own official Top 10, but after that things "diverge." Why? Because [insert usual former-conflict-of-interest-y caveat here] despite the site's admirable expansion of coverage over the last five years into areas that readers might not necessarily mutiny over, who else is gonna vote the Shins for "Most Underrated Album" with a straight face, Braff jokes be damned?

THE GOOD: Consensus cynicism be damned, it's kind of heartening that, after all the first-listen reviews and release date hype hype, people actually do seem to be repeat-listening to and enjoying the Most Important Album Of 2007. (You can decide which one we're talking about.)
THE BAD: That said, consensus keeps great records from Roisin Murphy, Dude N' Nem, and the Dirty Projectors, which "most often received first-place votes," off the singles list in favor of two Arcade Fire joints, two Radiohead songs, and (less irritatingly) two Spoon and LCD Soundsystem tracks each. Democracy!
THE WHAAA?: We've only included the Best Albums and Best Singles list after the jump, but interestingly, or perhaps just keeping with this year's vibe of established artists comfortably trouncing even well-regarded upstarts, only three of the winners in the Best New(ish) Act category make the album and/or singles lists, all down in the lower reaches save the expected Top 10 finish for Justice's "D.A.N.C.E."

"Pitchfork" Thinks LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends" Is Something Great This summer I was already convinced that LCD Soundsystem would top Pitchfork's list of the best singles of the year, even if I wasn't sure if the spot would go to "All My Friends" or "Someone Great." But my former colleagues solved the issue by putting both songs into the Top 10 of the site's Top 100 singles of 2007, to which (in the interest of full blah de blah) I should note that I did not contribute my two cents. (Albums list neither.) The full 100 is after the jump, but first our thoughts on the list you've all been (admit it) patiently waiting to pick apart more than any other.

THE GOOD: The Top 10 belongs to what are by now the usual suspects (try to guess the precise order before clicking!), but this is probably the only year-end wrap-up where Sun City Girls guitar magus Sir Richard Bishop shares space with the handbag R&B of T2's bassline house anthem "Heartbroken," a soppy memory from the heyday of U.K. garage that grows on me with each listen. And unlike the bulk of 2007's best-of lists, most every entry comes with an MP3 or audio stream (or at least a video clip) so that you can decide in real time just how much you disagree with it.
THE BAD: Pretty light on dance/electronic music for a site with a monthly techno column by one of the best critics covering the beat and hip-hop's been more or less whittled down to the handful of expected/accepted 2007 Inter-faves (Kanye, Jay-Z, Wayne, etc.) in favor of Pitchfork's indie wheelhouse (which had a better-than-average year). Plus they didn't even have the balls to rank the Black Kids higher than No. 68.
THE WHAAAA? Pitchfork's (institutional) embrace of the pop charts is still so odd. (That it was one of the weakest years for American pop in my living memory notwithstanding.) For instance, nothing by Lloyd, Ne-Yo, Amerie (who they favorably reviewed, even if she scored no American hits this year), Keyshia Cole, Timbaland, Bobby Valentino, Beyonce, Chris Brown, etc. makes the list, which would be fine if there was a blanket ban on non-"Umbrella" R&B. Except why did a negligible soundtrack inclusion from one-hit ex-model Cassie (a song the entry even acknowledges is initially "devoid of any distinctive qualities") make it in?

No 23: LCD Soundsystem Is Feeling A Little Oppositional lcd_soundsystem.jpg And in this corner, we have the scruffy disco pugilist behind the song at No. 23.

LCD released my favorite album of the year—yes, me and seemingly every third rock critic on the planet—so I'm certainly not immune to the pleasures of universal fave "All My Friends" (a song so calculated to appeal to aged emos that I was rethinking including it here up until the last minute) or even the bullheaded mordancy of "North American Scum." But if it was James Murphy's lyrical dip into touchy-feely humanism that gave Sound Of Silver the edge over the sarcastic pastiche of its predecessor, the slow burner "Us. V. Them" revealed itself over the last 10 months as the album's greatest groove, which should still count for something when you're using the word "disco" to describe a band, whatever you're hyphenating it with. The guitars are at their most Afro-disco prickly, the Hi-NRG sequencers throb with Pat Mahoney's thrilling timekeeping, and discounting Silver opener "Get Innocuous," the well-documented Brian Eno vocal affectations are at their funniest.

"Fact" Puts On Its Dancing Shoes (But Still Picks LCD Soundsystem) soundofsilver.jpgLike many other publications featured in our ongoing Year-End Analysis series, Brit music mag Fact placed LCD Soundsystem in its top single slot of the year, but they chose neither "North American Scum" or "All My Friends." And though left-field faves like Panda Bear and consensus picks like M.I.A. dot the magazine's albums list, the Arcade Fire, Radiohead, and (yes) LCD Soundsystem are nowhere to be found. Fact's actually turned in a pair of the most idiosyncratic year-end wrap-ups of 2007 so far, and they're speckled by blog faves including our (cough, cough) fave band of 2007, Black Kids. Fact's Top 100 tracks and Top 20 albums are after the jump, but first our thoughts on two lists that remember people still go out to dance clubs (or at least download MP3s of records that get played in dance clubs).

THE GOOD: Dance music! Lots of it! And not just Justice! Fact's Top 100 singles list is filled with dance 12s and EPs, from underground disco edits to Internet-hype picks to deep Germanic techno to dubstep, and their albums list is similarly foot-friendly. Totally refreshing, and making me think I should have paid closer attention to dance music this year.
THE BAD: Like a lot of (seemingly) dance/electronic-focused magzines, Fact's taste in guitar-based music sometimes feels a little shaky. Vampire Weekend released the best rock single of the year? If you say so, you crazy Englanders.
THE WHAAAA? On "Umbrella": "Just compare this take on a loved-up R&B ballad against, say, Beyonce's recent efforts, and you'll quickly see how special Rihanna is." Did the U.K. suddenly forget "Irreplaceable"? Has the planet gone mad? Am I still the only person alive who dislikes "Umbrella"?

"Guardian" Writers Encase Their Ears In Silver soundofsilver.jpgLCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver—which, based on my rough estimation of the number of times we've had to use the album cover illustration over the past few weeks, seems to be running away with this year's top-albums lists, at least in the UK—topped the Guardian critics' poll, with its now-familiar listmates Radiohead, the Hold Steady, M.I.A., and the Klaxons rounding out the top five. Full list after the jump.

THE GOOD: Because the Guardian's list reprinted lines—and star ratings—from each ranking album's original review, we can all see that either the music writers have changed their stance on the Klaxons or the Guardian's fired the person who gave Myths Of The Near Future one star, saying that "Indie chancers trying to pass this ropey stuff off as a dance revival is insulting and pointless." But maybe I appreciate this because Myths grew on me over the course of 2007, too.
THE BAD: Feist's The Reminder at No. 10. Britney Spears' Blackout at No. 17. Hey, if you're going to have the year's most talked-about dance-pop album on your list, why not get really ballsy and put it ahead of the snoozy dinner-party music?
THE WHAAA? "Like a hunk of blue cheese, Tennessee's Kings of Leon seem to be getting better with age." Really, Guardian? Really?

1 LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver
2 Radiohead, In Rainbows
3 The Hold Steady, Boys and Girls in America

7 Grinderman
8 Battles, Mirrored
9 PJ Harvey, White Chalk

"Stylus" Bids Farewell With LCD Soundsystem soundofsilver.jpgOmnivorous online music mag Stylus sadly shut down several months before we started our Year-End Analysis series, but they helpfully published their 2007 Top 50 albums and singles lists before bowing out. So welcome to the first retroactive installment, where LCD Soundsystem once again tops both lists. (And they got the right single this time.) Both lists are after the jump if you missed 'em, but first an adieu to the site by way of our summary thoughts.

THE GOOD: Hey, look, the first list that actually remembers that electronic/dance music still exists, and/or that Justice wasn't the only dance act to release an LP this year. Plus stuff that gets played on the radio that's not "Umbrella" or Kanye West! It's like popular music actually has some breadth or something.
THE BAD: We actually have little in the way of beef with these lists, though they do confirm that Miranda Lambert, a very goood singer who made a solid album, has found herself turned into the Muzik Mafia of '07 by the planet's rock critics.
THE WHAAA?: Vampire Weekend's single ahead of Rihanna, R. Kelly, Lil Mama, and the best song off the Kanye LP? Also we're starting to feel like the only people on Earth who got a rah-rah rash whenever Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" came on MTV. Even Stephen King liked it!

"Uncut" Sings The Praises Of Sound Of Silver soundofsilver.jpgBritish music mag Uncut may advertise a mind-numbing recycled feature in the form of John Lennon's "30 Greatest Songs" on the cover of of its year-end issue, but much like how the magazine's reviews section stays doggedly up-to-date even as the rest of the book flogs seemingly exhausted rock icons, its year-end list names LCD Soundsystem's Sound Of Silver the best album of the year and LCD's "North American Scum" the best song. (Even more surprising for a mag that trades so heavily on "worthy" rock music for grown-up boys, Rihanna's "Umbrella" sits just behind James Murphy at No. 2 on the songs list.) You know the full lists are after the jump, but an advance preview for now.

THE GOOD: PJ Harvey's astounding White Chalk makes a surprisingly high appearance at No. 3, not that we're complaining. Also Uncut's got to be the only relatively high-profile music mag in the world, other than The Wire, that would put Robert Wyatt's art-drunk album about sobering up, Comicopera, in its Top 10.
THE BAD: People really did love that Wilco album, didn't they? Things get a bit flabby in the AAA-friendly mid-section of the albums list with the exception of Les Savy Fav's very fine comeback. Also the Arctic Monkeys at No. 2 seems a bit of a stretch for an album where even fans grumbled and whispered about sophomore slumps.
THE WHAAA?: As Maura wondered, how do EPs count as "songs"? With the format enjoying something of a minor resurgence, is it time to bring back the EP category across the board when it comes to best-of lists?

That's How It Starts/We Get Talked Up By The Press

When compiling today's Summer Songs poll, one track we very nearly included on the list was LCD Soundsystem's hipster smash "All My Friends," the second single from Sound of Silver. After all, we didn't want to put just one indie-friendly record on a list choked with pop and invite the more discerning of our readers to pool their voting and stack the deck for one song. (We're defining a "hipster smash," by the way, as a song much-talked-about in a 20-block radius of lower Manhattan and upper Brooklyn and completely unknown to 98.7426% of the United States of America.) There's no question that "All My Friends"—in both its original incarnation and its LCD-sanctioned covers by Franz Ferdinand and John Cale—is one of the year's best songs. But it can't really be called a "summer jam"—unless you're the sort of person whose pale body won't see sunlight until Coney Island's art-damaged Siren Festival two weeks from now—and its cultural impact is easy for certain folks to overstate.

Which is exactly what the well-intentioned Hua Hsu does in his newest piece for Slate praising "All My Friends." I for one have nothing against Hsu—less than nothing. He's a good writer whose interests span both termite art and mass-culture artifacts; he was responsible for Slate's immortal, oft-cited 2005 piece "Notes on 'Humps': A Song So Awful It Hurts the Mind," which in deconstructing the Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps" declared "a song can be so bad as to veer toward evil." No argument here!

Nonetheless, reading his "All My Friends" piece—in which he keenly deconstructs the song's winning approach to post-rave-culture nostalgia—Maura and I are reminded of our many acquaintances who think that just because their eight friends are sick of talking about a song or a band or an album, it must be ubiquitous. Too often in the piece, you stumble across something like this:

"All My Friends," the brilliant and deeply nostalgic new single from LCD Soundsystem ... bears all the traits of a ubiquitous dance-club hit, [but] this only half-explains its massive popularity.

"Massive"? Last we checked, "All My Friends" wasn't charting anywhere. And we're not being nasty or unfair and only counting the pop charts: it's not on any small-radio or niche-sales chart, either, not the Modern Rock, Dance Club Play or Dance Singles charts, nor is it even on Billboard's "Tastemakers" chart, which rewards the kind of record that sells well at Other Music or Newbury Comics.

It's not charting anywhere on iTunes best-sellers' lists, either—but here's where the plot thickens. "All My Friends" is not available for sale as an a la carte download at all. On iTunes, it's an "Album Only" download as part of Sound of Silver, and then only in its original, seven-minute incarnation. Murphy's four-minute "radio edit" of the song is the basis for the song's music video, and it can be acquired via gray-market means on certain file-sharing sites. But not on iTunes. So to be fair to Hsu, there's no real way of knowing how "massive" "All My Friends" is, because Murphy hasn't made it trackable.

It's possible that the album version of "All My Friends" isn't on sale for 99 cents because of royalties: numerous songs over seven minutes are restricted on iTunes because of arcane publishing rules that price long songs at a higher rate. (Voila! The explanation for jam bands.) But you'd think Murphy would make the four-minute version more widely available and try to garner at least a medium-size hit. Then again, this is a guy who was hoping to convince all 60,000 of his debut-album buyers to give him a top 10 debut in March by buying Silver its first week; maybe he's still hoping to keep the album pumped up.

Whatever Murphy and Hsu are thinking, we'd like some evidence that this lovable song is getting played somewhere besides your white earbuds. Yesterday's Slate writeup might vault LCD Soundsystem into the realm of (ew) yuppie-indie Starbucks culture. But any Idolator reader who hears "All My Friends" booming from a car besides their own—even a Prius—should drop us a line. We'll take back everything we said here.

The melancholy greatness of the LCD Soundsystem hit. [Slate]

Leak Of The Day: Franz Ferdinand Does Its Best LCD Soundsystem Impression franz-ferdinand.jpgThe Music Slut has an MP3—possibly ripped from MySpace—of Franz Ferdinand covering LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends." The FF track is slated to appear as an LCD B-side next month, and while LCD's tinkling piano lines make a quick cameo, this version far more Hooky (ha!) than the original:

The LCD Soundsystem Soundscam: Could James Murphy Actually Top The Charts? lcdpic.jpgTwo months ago, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy posted a message on the DFA Records board, in which he asked fans to send this week's Sound Of Silver album to the top of the charts. His logic: If the Dreamgirls soundtrack can claim the top spot by selling a mere 60,064, than he could move at least the same amount of Silver copies:

lcd record 1 (the old record) sold a total of 60559 in the US since it was released. meaning, straight up, if everyone who bought the first record bought s.o.s. the week it's released, then we're totally #1. i'm sure some people who bought the old record have now moved on to extreme noise or something, but maybe there are enough new people to make up for it!

So how's that working out for him so far?

So far, we only have a handful of online sales rankings to look at. And while these positions provide strictly anecdotal data, they do give an idea of how Sound Of Silver is faring against such just-released records from the likes of Modest Mouse and Joss Stone. All positions are as of this morning:

Amazon: No. 17
iTunes album chart: No. 9
BarnesandNoble.com: No. 26
Insound.com: No. 5

It looks as though Murphy's biggest challenge is not only fending off Isaac and Joss—both of whom could cross the six-figure mark, according to HITS—but dealing with last week's surprising amount of top-five debuts. Perhaps if Silver had been released in the dead of early winter, it would have stood a chance of hitting the upper echelons of the chart; as it stands now, it'll be lucky to break the top ten. Of course, this was all just a tongue-in-cheek PR stunt, rather than a sincere desire for world domination merely disguised as a PR stunt. Right?

The Last Word: LCD Soundsystem Gets Innoculated With Praise lcdsoundsss.jpg(Ed. note: What used to be Idolator's Record-Review Revue is now The Last Word, a semi-regular feature in which we round up the all-important, all-summarizing last sentences of the week's biggest new-music reviews. This week's entry is LCD Soundsystem's just-released Sound Of Silver):

- "...But there's also the tenderness of "Someone Great," a detailed account of grieving over a dead friend. The keyboard line that starts this elegy throbs like a hard fact that can't be reversed, and as Murphy sings about his regrets — that the sky weren't so blue, that he will move on — other elements build, every one slightly abrasive, adding up to something beautiful. It's a perfect metaphor for the off-kilter daze we call consciousness, carrying us through this cruel, wonderful life." [LA Times, four stars]
- "...When it's all said and done, Murphy's real legacy to dance music will be his production sense. He's an analog obsessive with a general aversion to software, and Sound of Silver reflects that. Far removed from the compressed, trebly and overmastered paradigm that's gripped electronic music in the last decade, Sound of Silver sounds deep, spacious and full-blooded. (Like, um, an old rock record.) It's an absolute joy to listen to, for every possible reason, not the least of which is because, these days, those epiphanies feel like they're coming fewer and farther between." [Pitchfork, 9.2]
- "...But somehow it all holds together as an album (the New Wave-y tunes "Someone Great" and "All My Friends" help), and by the end, ex-indie-rocker Murphy comes full circle, returning to his roots with the Pavement-meets-Morrissey comic lament "New York I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down." [Rolling Stone, four stars]

LCD Soundsystem Is Playing To A Mouse, A Mouse murphysbathtime.jpgIt's a registration-required article, alas, but today's Wall Street Journal looks at the boom in rustic or makeshift music studios:

In the last two weeks, about half of the new albums with featured reviews on Pitchfork, an independent-music Web site, were recorded either in makeshift studios or professional ones in pastoral settings. Arcade Fire bought an old church outside Montreal to record last week's "Neon Bible," which has since sold 92,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Brit-rock band the Kaiser Chiefs recorded their second album, "Yours Truly, Angry Mob," which comes out March 27, at a country manor in Berkshire, England. (Rustic is relative: The manor includes a professional studio and advertises its gym and heated pool.)

[LCD Soundsystem]'s well-reviewed new album, "Sound of Silver," will come out Tuesday, at the same time as "Living with the Living" from Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, which was recorded at the same countryside studio in North Brookfield, Mass. There, the 100-acre Long View Farm Studios operates like a bed and breakfast — with recording studios in a barn and a 19th-century farmhouse. (Nightly room rate, with recording sessions: $1,000 to $2,000)...

One reason for the recent wave: Smaller and less expensive digital production tools have allowed producers and bands to set up studios in unusual places. (Rock outfit My Morning Jacket has recorded in a Kentucky grain silo.) Moreover, music's sales slump has put many studios out of business, and their equipment has flooded the market, according to Mark McKenna, general manager of Allaire Studios, a facility in New York's Catskill Mountains. "The whole business is becoming decentralized," he says.

There are several creative advantages to working in an off-the-beaten-path locale, including less noise, fewer distractions, and a "we came here and we gotta do this" sense of purpose. Plus, you can grow your own drugs, thus eliminating the middle-man, and allowing you to spend your weed per diem on boondocks prostitutes.

LCD Soundsystem Frontman Joins The Crowded Field Of Rambling, Unedited Music Bloggers lcd_soundsystem.jpgA few weeks ago, stubbly LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy began posting on the Guardian's music blog, an outlet that allows him to speak out on such topics as the plight of being a too-frequent flyer and the joys of ultimate fighting. But apparently readers were complaining that Murphy wasn't writing about music, prompting him to post an explanation so protracted and rambling, it's like listening to David Foster Wallace and James Woods have a pow-wow after drinking a half-dozen Water Joes.

so, you get a manager. at first you don't want one, and you don't know why you don't. it seems strange. but things eventually start falling through the cracks - you book two gigs on the same day, interviews get missed, artwork is turned in late and you get one. maybe you get one and then fire him/her, get sued, and wonder why you chose to do this childish thing for a living in the first place, but that's a different story, so let's jump to you-have-a-good-manager-that-you-like. so you have a good manager that you like, and you get an email from him/her that says, basically, "the guardian wants you to write a blog type thing, about 400 words, twice a week for a bit. it can be about anything you want, not music necessarily." and you think about it, and write back that you'll do it. that's it. your manager got an email from a guy at a label who spoke to a person at the guardian, and that's the trail. you are sort of way over here, and you write an article-thingy on ultimate fighting because, well, you really like it, and you think it's funny because people always think you're kidding when you talk about it, even though you're totally serious, and that funny face that they make to cover the angles makes you curious about humans, and sometimes that's a better reason to make something. i mean, often the reasons people make things are pretty bankrupt: you try to impress people, or get some sort of vanity fulfilled via external praise, etc., but then along comes "let's see what happens if i do this", and somehow that becomes a great reason to make things. someone might attack me for this. i might read from someone a comment that you should make things for some inspiring reason, but this thinking usually comes from people who don't make things very often. i thought like that for years, but then, for years i didn't make anything. at any rate, you read all the comments, and it becomes clear that the most interesting thing for you to do is to reply in the comments section, though you know it's a bad idea, and you regularly get reminded that acting like this looks bad, etc., but it just seems like a better thing to think about than "oh just forget it you can't worry about this stuff". truth is, i don't worry very much, but i do find it fulfilling.

He lost us somewhere around "via external praise, etc.," during which our SHIFT key got up and walked out of room in protest.

The new LCD Soundsystem record is all over the Internet, and we have Little White Earbuds to thank for the track below. Is it just us, or is James Murphy channeling Zevon on that "how-ooooh" bit?

LCD Soundsystem's "Nike" Run: The Coolest 45-Minute-Long Song You'll Hear All Day soundsystem.jpgYes, it's a song custom-made for Nike. And yes, it's longer than a Nick Sylvester Harvard lecture. But you really have to listen to LCD Soundsystem's "45:33 Nike+ Original Run," which is so good, we actually bought it off the iTunes store. For reals! Luckily, fluo kids has a DRM-free version you can grab:
