Cranking The Lineup Of The 2008 Decibel Festival

I know this is city-based favoritism to some degree—it doesn't hurt that I live within walking distance of nearly everything going on—but the lineup for the 2008 Decibel Festival in Seattle makes the annual electronic dance music fete look like one serious party. The headliners were announced a few weeks ago, and the organizers have been sending Facebook friends the semi-final lineups ahead of their website; we've copied them below the jump. The showcases are well chosen, and the best of them are as good as anything you'll see in Europe at similar events. Pay attention especially to the "Detroit: Past, Present & Future" lineup and the final night's headliners: by themselves these should be pretty amazing, and throwing in a Saturday in the park (a park I live three blocks from; yes!) and a Sunday BBQ and you're talking a techno fest every bit as attractive as its overseas (and cross-border—holla, Mutek) counterparts. Pop Montreal Goes For The Grand Gestures

The Pop Montreal festival, slated for Oct. 1-5, definitely has one of the more mishmashy bills I've seen from a multi-day, multi-act event this year, with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Burt Bacharach, Hot Chip, Wire, Silver Apples, Julie Doiron, the Wedding Present, and Headlights among the many, many acts that are confirmed so far. (Please somebody get Bacharach and Cave together for something, anything. Full lineup after the jump. More »

South Padre Island To Host Dudefest '08

Known nationally as a second-rate Girls Gone Wild location, South Padre Island, Texas, could probably use an image makeover. But is it any better to be known as That Place With the Music Festival for Middle-Aged Dudes With Ponytails? Because the lineup for the second-annual South Padre International Music Festival has been announced, and it smells like warm beer and stale cigarettes. Press release after the jump. More »

Not Even The Presence Of Soul Asylum Can Prevent Us From Asking "Another Festival? Really?"

Sure, Coachella attendance was soft, the Vegoose festival went under, and San Diego's Street Scene festival is scaling down, but the city of West Hollywood believes that this is the perfect moment to announce a new festival. Not only will does the initial lineup of the Sunset Strip Music Festival include Soul Asylum, Everclear, and something called "L.A. Guns featuring Jani Lane of Warrant," it'll feature a kickoff event hosted by Mark McGrath and a roundtable hosted by Larry King. What more could you ask for? Mark your calendars now! More »

Bob Dylan Gives His Blessing To Another Store At The Mall

The latest entrant in the filled-to-the-brim summer festival lineup: The New American Music Union, an American Eagle-sponsored, Anthony Kiedis-curated show taking place in Pittsburgh on Aug. 8 and 9. The lineup is split between summer-fest stalwarts like Bob Dylan, Spoon, the Roots, and Black Mountain and a "battle of the bands" between 15 acts representing universities around the country. The winning band gets a whole day in a recording studio on AE's dime, which I guess we're supposed to take as a sign that their "cheaper than Abercrombie" aesthetic isn't really pulling in the shoppers as much as it did during the housing boom. (I'm happy to see that my alma mater is representing with The French Horn Rebellion, who sound kind of like a grimier Pulsars and who have a remix of Shannon's "Let The Music Play" (!!!) on their MySpace page. Go Cats!) Full lineup after the jump. More »

Ozzfest Clipped To One Day In Dallas, Metallica Stuck Atop Its Lineup

Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica will headline this year's Ozzfest, which is slated to be a one-day festival that will also feature Jonathan Davis, The Sword, Serj Tankian, and many other, crappier metal bands. The show is set for Aug. 9 at Dallas' Pizza Hut Park, a setup that is causing fans to revolt in the official announcement's comment section. (Sample comments: "FUCK YOU Sharron!!!!!!! If it wasnt for the thousands of people like me that payed to see Ozzfest and promote music YOU wouldnt have anything....You have made your last dime from me"; "This Suck This is bullshit ozzfest is only going to be a one day show in TX. Well I am gland that all of other summer tour is not like this like warped tour now we got a new summer tour call rockstar mayhem tour I hope it better than ozzfest") Full lineup after the jump. Rocklahoma Adds Fifth Day; Oklahoma Beer Distributors Very Psyched

Because of "overwhelming response from members of the rock community and their fan" (um, sic?), the hard-rock reunionfest Rocklahoma has swelled to a fifth day, news that's probably thrilling all the businesses within a 500-mile radius of the festival's home city, Pryor, Okla. The festival will now run July 9-13; a ton of hard-rock stalwarts, including Extreme, Cinderella, Tesla, and Sebastian Bach, have already been announced, leaving me to puzzle over just who, exactly, will be performing on that extra day. (Also, am I the only one who just realized that Living Colour was on the bill?) Full roster of acts, including the many second-stage bands, after the jump. More »

As rumored last night, The Vaselines and Eric's Trip (and Les Thugs, too) have been added to the Sub Pop 20th anniversary party in Seattle July 12 and 13, and there's still "more to be added soon." Also, for those of you wondering where Tad is, there's also a news-to-me show featuring the Gutter Twins (Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli!) and the Brothers of the Sonic Cloth (Tad!!!) the night of July 12 at the Showbox. The show will be the Vaselines' first Stateside show ever, and some rabble-rouser in our comments is saying that they're going to play New York, too?! Oooh. Full lineup (including the roster for the Friday night comedy show) after the jump. [SubPop.com]

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and Broken Social Scene will headline this year's Siren Festival, the Village Voice-sponsored free sweatfest on Coney Island scheduled for July 19. Other bands on the bill: Beach House, Film School, and Annuals (remember them?). Bonus frequent-flyer points go to Times New Viking, who will play Siren on Saturday then fly out to Chicago for a performance at the Pitchfork Music Festival the next day. Full lineup after the jump.

Monolith Festival Seemingly Comfortable With Indie-Intensive Lineup

A festival with Justice and Devotchka as the headliners? Where's the Jay-Z or Joe Jackson? Where's the Weiland? The ironically named Monolith Festival, which will hit Red Rocks Ampitheater on Sept. 13 and 14, is keeping the scale kind of small, but kind of awesome as well. TV On The Radio, CSS, Del The Funkee Homosapien, and bands with even less name recognition may not pull in the suburbanites, but it should make for an enjoyable show. Lineup after the jump. More »

The rest of the Pitchfork Music Festival's lineup has been announced, and rounding out the night where bands perform classic albums is... Sebadoh, performing Bubble & Scrape. Kind of a letdown given a) the speculation about what other bands might be playing and b) my personal preference for Bakesale, but what are you gonna do. Also added to the bill: the Hold Steady, High Places, and Elf Power, among others. Click the album cover for the entire lineup.

My Bloody Valentine To Play Stateside, Curate Best North American Festival Of 2008

Not only is My Bloody Valentine playing the just-announced All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Monticello, N.Y., this fall, they're curating the damn thing, and among the bands they've hand-picked to play include Built To Spill (performing Perfect From Now On), Polvo, the Meat Puppets (playing Meat Puppets II), and Low. And there's more to come! Tickets are limited to 3,000 and go on sale Friday, a.k.a. the first day of Coachella, which should make the festival-junkie action on Craigslist very interesting over the coming months. The announced lineup after the jump. More »

Massive Attack Plans A Meltdown

Massive Attack, which now consists of original members Robert "3D" Del Naja and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, will curate their very own Meltdown Festival in London this June. It's a pretty rich line-up with lots of obvious touchstones like Grace Jones, George Clinton, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Adrian Sherwood, as well as modern acts like Leila and Elbow. Full line-up after the jump. More »

Roskilde Festival Lineup Proves That Denmark Gets To Have All The Fun

The lineup for Denmark's Roskilde Festival—scheduled for July 3-6—is so whoa-inducing that I'm just going to list a few of the many pairs that you can come up with from combining names on the bill: Grinderman and Jay-Z; 18th Dye (!!!) and At The Gates; Slayer and Neil Young; Lykke Li and Judas Priest. And that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Feast your eyes on the poster (because there are way too many artists on the bill for me to sit here typing them all out) after the jump. More »

Austin City Limits Festival Gives Those Who Miss SXSW's Barbecue A Reason To Go Back To Texas

The Foo Fighters, Beck, and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant are headlining this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival, which takes place Sept. 26-28 in Austin's Zilker Park. The festival is promoted by Lollapalooza promoters C3, and it shares a few artists with its Chicago cousin, including Gnarls Barkley, the Raconteurs, and Okkervil River; other lineup highlights for the three-day sweatfest include Tegan & Sara, Against Me!, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Erykah Badu, and the Heartless Bastards. Also: Flyleaf? Full lineup after the jump. More »

The line-up for the Calgary edition of the Virgin Festival has been announced, and I recognize the names of a whopping eight out of the 19 bands listed on the official website, including Americans Stone Temple Pilots, the Flaming Lips, and Face To Face. (Didn't even know they were still together when I played "Disconnected" on the jukebox this weekend.) Canadians (or border-dwelling Americans) can get the rest of line-up by clicking on the logo to the left. [Virgin Festival Calgary/HT: Matt Learoyd]

Gym Class Heroes Keep Guest Stars' Names Off New Album, Share Guest Stars' Names

Gym Class Heroes, the emo rap no one asked for, is psyched to talk about their upcoming album The Quilt: Starring Gym Class Heroes, set for August. Wouldn't you be, if your new album featured Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, and John Oates? Only leader Travis McCoy doesn't want you to think that this is some stuntcasting nonsense, so he's planning to leave the names of the celebrity guests off the tracklisting. "I can't speak for everyone but I hate seeing lots of features on an album. So, instead we're having a movie aesthetic, where everyone is going to be part of the cast as opposed to being featured." Does this mean Travis will yell "and Ne-Yo as...himself!" over an instrumental at the end of the CD? More »
