Really?"]]> Sure, Coachella attendance was soft, the Vegoose festival went under, and San Diego's Street Scene festival is scaling down, but the city of West Hollywood believes that this is the perfect moment to announce a new festival. Not only will does the initial lineup of the Sunset Strip Music Festival include Soul Asylum, Everclear, and something called "L.A. Guns featuring Jani Lane of Warrant," it'll feature a kickoff event hosted by Mark McGrath and a roundtable hosted by Larry King. What more could you ask for? Mark your calendars now!

<![CDATA[Bob Dylan Gives His Blessing To Another Store At The Mall]]> dylannn.jpgThe latest entrant in the filled-to-the-brim summer festival lineup: The New American Music Union, an American Eagle-sponsored, Anthony Kiedis-curated show taking place in Pittsburgh on Aug. 8 and 9. The lineup is split between summer-fest stalwarts like Bob Dylan, Spoon, the Roots, and Black Mountain and a "battle of the bands" between 15 acts representing universities around the country. The winning band gets a whole day in a recording studio on AE's dime, which I guess we're supposed to take as a sign that their "cheaper than Abercrombie" aesthetic isn't really pulling in the shoppers as much as it did during the housing boom. (I'm happy to see that my alma mater is representing with The French Horn Rebellion, who sound kind of like a grimier Pulsars and who have a remix of Shannon's "Let The Music Play" (!!!) on their MySpace page. Go Cats!) Full lineup after the jump.

The show is set for Aug. 9 at Dallas' Pizza Hut Park, a setup that is causing fans to revolt in the official announcement's comment section. (Sample comments: "FUCK YOU Sharron!!!!!!! If it wasnt for the thousands of people like me that payed to see Ozzfest and promote music YOU wouldnt have anything....You have made your last dime from me"; "This Suck This is bullshit ozzfest is only going to be a one day show in TX. <![CDATA[Rocklahoma Adds Fifth Day; Oklahoma Beer Distributors Very Psyched]]> 308530.jpgBecause of "overwhelming response from members of the rock community and their fan" (um, sic?), the hard-rock reunionfest Rocklahoma has swelled to a fifth day, news that's probably thrilling all the businesses within a 500-mile radius of the festival's home city, Pryor, Okla. The festival will now run July 9-13; a ton of hard-rock stalwarts, including Extreme, Cinderella, Tesla, and Sebastian Bach, have already been announced, leaving me to puzzle over just who, exactly, will be performing on that extra day. <![CDATA[Gym Class Heroes Keep Guest Stars' Names Off New Album, Share Guest Stars' Names]]> AP070601027280.jpgGym Class Heroes, the emo rap no one asked for, is psyched to talk about their upcoming album The Quilt: Starring Gym Class Heroes, set for August. Wouldn't you be, if your new album featured Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, and John Oates? Only leader Travis McCoy doesn't want you to think that this is some stuntcasting nonsense, so he's planning to leave the names of the celebrity guests off the tracklisting. "I can't speak for everyone but I hate seeing lots of features on an album. So, instead we're having a movie aesthetic, where everyone is going to be part of the cast as opposed to being featured." Does this mean Travis will yell "and Ne-Yo as...himself!" over an instrumental at the end of the CD?

"You won't know who is on the album just by looking at the liner notes. You'll know only if you listen and recognize the person's voice. This way, people know we didn't do stuff for name sake, but really because that person belonged on that song."

Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne, John Oates, K-OS and Busta Rhymes are among the guest features, while Cool & Dre and Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump have assisted with production.

The set includes the Oates-featuring "Fly With Me," a dedication to McCoy's cousin who committed suicide last year. "It's sort of a Romeo and Juliet-type of story," he says.

Featuring Oates but not featuring Hall? I thought Darryl and Travis were tight!

I suspect there's drama in the world of rock'n'soul'n'emo-rap.

Pepe LePew," sneered the festival figurehead and lost cause. Responded Jim, "Wasn't Pepe the one who always got the girls? What the heck is wrong with that?" Actually, Pepe didn't get the girls, DeRo. Pepe was an overly amorous skunk that pathologically assaulted cats that had accidentally walked against wet paint. And the cats didn't like it. Anyhooo, the full line-up for Lollapalooza, which takes place Aug. 1-3 in Chicago, is out now. Behold!

Perry Farrell is also excited to make some "unique content" for iTunes.

This year, we have an amazing concept going. For the first time ever, we're going to be working with iTunes, and we're going to be creating unique content, so we're going to have collaborations — people collaborating on songs — and then put them on iTunes, and then they'll perform them at Lollapalooza for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These will be recorded in a studio, but of course because we can share files online, we don't have to be in the same place at the same time — we have finishing studios all over the world for the artists to finish the piece off. We'll start to talk with Radiohead about putting them with someone they'd like to collaborate with, tell them how it's going to go down.

You're going to tell Radiohead how it's going to go down, Perry? Radiohead answers to no one, dude.

<![CDATA[Kanye West And Your Standard Alt-Rock Linchpins To Headline Lollapooza '08]]> jderogatis.jpg Days before the official announcement, Chicago journalist/R. Kelly snitch Jim "Idol Killer" DeRogatis already has the scoop on what bands will playing Lollapalooza 08. Main stages acts include Lush, Fishbone, Psychotronica, Rollins Band, Mighty Mighty Bossto..oh, how I kid! Headliners will include Kanye West, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, and the Raconteurs. No word on a Hole or Siouxsie & The Banshees reunion yet.

The Raconteurs, Wilco and West will each be making their second appearance at the reinvented destination festival. Other repeaters among the more than 100 acts on this year's bill are Gnarls Barkley, the Black Keys, Broken Social Scene, G. Love & Special Sauce, Blues Traveler and Mates of State.

Quite a few of the other acts—including many of the most promising—have earlier performed at Chicago's two independently produced music festivals, Pitchfork and Intonation. These include Bloc Party, Cat Power, Stephen Malkmus, Girl Talk, Kid Sister, Office, the Cool Kids, Battles, the Go! Team, Jamie Lidell and Grizzly Bear.

So its obvious alt meets obvious hipster with a dash of obvious Kanye, right? I'm only jealous if John Popper jams with with the Jicks.

<![CDATA[Sled Island Festival Continues Canada's "A Festival For Every Province" Mandate]]> There are many reasons why the just-announced Sled Island festival, which is set for June 25-28, became the front-runner on my personal "festivals I'd like to attend this summer" list. First, it's happening in Calgary, a city that I have wanted to visit since my young days poring over the hockey standings in the sports pages. Second, it's not happening in a big open space but in "a variety of locations" around the city, thus ensuring that I can maybe avoid sunburn for at least a few daylight hours. And as Matos pointed out, Sled Island differentiates itself from other summer shows by having a lineup made up of a bunch of solid indie bands instead of the Radiohead/Jack Johnson hydra that's constricting the rest of the continent—and said lineup includes Wire and Miss Murgatroid with Petra Haden and Jonathan Richman. The full lineup will be announced May 1, but there are many artists who have already committed, and they're after the jump.

Jonathan Richman
The Gutter Twins (Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan)

<![CDATA[Bamboozle Organizers Just Messing With Everyone At This Point]]> bamboozle-logo-2008.jpgThe Bamboozle, the annual throwdown in the Meadowlands parking lot that will bring the Mighty Mighty Bosstones back to New Jersey this May, has added a few more artists to its already-heaving lineup, which, in addition to the Bosstones, is headlined by Paramore, Jimmy Eat World, Panic at the Disco, Gym Class Heroes, and... Bret Michaels. (Do all these tour bookings he's getting ensure that he's going to lobby real hard for Rock Of Love 3 or what?) Full list of additions after the jump.

Saturday May 3rd:

Sunday May 4th:

So we have America's most lovable hip-hop lech, a bunch of Internet-famous-to-the-point-of-weirdness dudes, the group that did that five-years-too-late song about how Williamsburg sucks, and the deathless OneRepublic. This slate of additions was clearly designed for maximum Internet giggling, wasn't it?

<![CDATA[Mile High Festival Hopes To Differentiate Itself From The Pack By Having Dave Matthews, John Mayer On Its Bill]]> If it's Tuesday, it's time to find out about the latest entrant into the more-crowded-than-ever 2008 festival lineup! Say hello to the brand-new Mile High Music Festival, which is headlined by Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty, and John Mayer; it's scheduled to take place July 19 and 20 in a park that's nine miles outside of downtown Denver. (For those of you marking calendars, yes, that's the same weekend as the Pitchfork Music Festival. So much for Petty playing Full Moon Fever on Friday night in Chicago!) The current announced lineup—which, be warned, bills OneRepublic above the Roots—after the jump.

<![CDATA[Public Enemy To Play In Pitchfork's Sandbox]]> publicenemy.jpgI had a pretty good time at last year's Pitchfork Music Festival—it had a solid lineup, cheap water, and gorgeous weather—and the initial announcement for this year's festival, which is taking place July 18-20, is making me excited to head back to Chicago this summer. Vampire Weekend's presence ensures that there will be a ton of heated arguments by the beer stalls; Animal Collective's participation will probably not satiate Jim DeRogatis' wariness over Pitchfork's similarities to Rolling Stone, so we'll be treated to another year of seeing him sitting around the press area with a surly look; and most importantly, Public Enemy is performing It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back in its entirety as part of the festival's annual "Don't Look Back" series. Full list of announced artists after the jump.

<![CDATA[France To Send Known Breast Man To Eurovision Stage]]>
So far, 30 of the 43 countries participating in next week's this spring's Eurovision Song Contest have made their song selections, and while we were going through the list one pick stood out: France is sending Sebastien Tellier, who will perform his song "Divine" (above). The track, which was produced by Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo, was reportedly selected in part because of Tellier's mastery of the "French touch"; no doubt that part of that "touch" comes from his fine grasp of artistic nudity, as seen in his Marlboro-Man-gone-wild album cover:

Will Tellier give the public one of the breast Eurovision performances ever? Stay tuned! (And sorry.)

<![CDATA[Bret Michaels And His Sweaty Bandanas To Headline Rocklahoma]]> The initial lineup for Rocklahoma, the festival of Headbanger's Ball darlings of yore taking place in Pryor, Okla., this July 10-13, was just announced at a press conference helmed by radio host and personal Mike Piazza fan Eddie Trunk, who called the bands playing the festival "a new generation's classic rock" who are currently handing the baton to bands currently making their way up the ranks (cough, cough). I listened to the whole press conference—from fakeout involving a pre-conference spin of Faith No More's "Epic" to the revelation that Black N' Blue is reuniting because the lead singer needs a gig to the "WE NEED BIG BANDS" proclamations from those gathered in the press conference's attached chat room—so I could bring you the lineup as it stands now. It's after the jump. (Don't say I don't care.)

Festival—held at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, Wash., and yes, the exclamation point's theirs—which will have R.E.M. and The Cure as its headliners, a one-two punch that will surely get the wallets of nostalgia-crazed twenty-, thirty-, and fortysomethings aflutter. The roster for the three-day fest, which takes place over Memorial Day weekend, also includes R.E.M. tourmates Modest Mouse and the National, the Flaming Lips doing a "UFO Show" that features a replica of a flying saucer and premiering their long-in-the-works film Christmas on Mars, the Breeders, and a new collaboration between Mike Patton and Dan the Automator called Crudo. I don't know why, but for some reason this fest's lineup seems like the most interesting one to me yet. (Perhaps it's the lack of Slightly Stoopid and Jack Johnson?) Full lineup (via Billboard) after the jump.
