Madonna May Not Have True-Blue Guitar Skills

A new Live Earth
The Live Earth powers that be decided to offer Idolator a press pass to Saturday's event at Giants Stadium, and, armed with some extra-strength sunscreen and a round-trip bus pass to New Jersey, I headed out to the wilds of the Meadowlands. The pass gave me access to the "press bubble," a large, inflatable room where reporters could watch the show on TV and quiz a few of the performers and celebrities who were around (sadly, Kanye West was not one of them), and the stadium, which was teeming with Bon Jovi fans, people in eco-friendly T-shirts, and, um, other Bon Jovi fans. After the jump, a few impressions from the day:

The majority of articles about the Live Earth rock extravaganza fell into two categories: "OK, but a little boring" or "Hey, Madonna was there, and some other stuff!". But we were wondering: After all the Rio organizers went through to save their concert, which had the largest crowd of all the Live Earth venues, where is the Xuxa coverage we, as media consumers, demand?

A new Madonna song, "Hey You", was made available for free today on MSN's site as part of the build-up to Al Gore's Live Earth concert extravaganza. The Pharrell-produced track is not going burn up dance floors anytime soon (think "Toy Soldiers," not "Deeper And Deeper"), but we encourage you to go over there and snag it (it's free, after all) for two reasons: one, every download drops a quarter into the coffers of the Alliance for Climate Protection; and two, someone has to encourage Microsoft now that they've dipped their toe into the MP3-distribution waters, right?

The blog Hidden Track is reporting that the North American installment of Al Gore's "Live Earth" concerts, which are happening on July 7, will take place at Shea Stadium, the New York Mets' soon-to-be-demolished ballpark in Flushing, Queens. One of your Idolators has spent a substantial amount of time at Shea Stadium, and we have to say: If ever there was a venue that doubled as an argument that the world was in need of massive cleanup, Shea is it*—and if the Red Hot Chili Peppers headline, the whole shebang will remain exactly on message.
