Which Nominated Song Should Win A Golden Globe? You Decide!

Fri Jan 14 2011 by Becky Bain
The 68th Annual Golden Globes are this Sunday, and we're looking forward to ranking the Glee cast in order of the fierceness of their red carpet outfits. (We seriously hope Jane Lynch dons her custom made Adidas wedding dress she wore on the show.) We're also curious which blonde singer will walk away with the Globe for Best Original Song: Christina Aguilera, Gwyneth Paltrow or Carrie Underwood? (Sorry Cher and currently brunette Mandy Moore, it's a fight between the flaxen-haired this year.) One thing's for sure — if Gwyneth doesn't win, she'll be saying "Forget You" to whoever does. Listen to all five nominated songs after the jump, and then vote in our poll. More »

9 Of Music’s Most Mismatched Couples (PHOTOS)

Tue Oct 26 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman

Katy Perry shattered many a teenage dream when she and Russell Brand tied the knot in India this past weekend. In doing so, our Halloween costume inspiration has officially joined the ranks of some of pop music’s oddest romantic pairings. While many of the marriages didn’t last—some even a week (we’re looking at you, Britney Spears)— we’re sure that Katy and Russell have what it takes to make it work. Now, a look back at the strangest pop star couples all thanks to Cupid’s misguided arrow. More »

Taylor Swift Joins The Soundtrack Club—But How Does “Today Was A Fairytale” Stack Up Against The Rest?

Wed Jan 20 2010 by Becky Bain
It's pretty much a given that casting a musician in your movie guarantees they'll contribute to the film's soundtrack—and if you're lucky, you'll have a hit song to help promote your flick. The most recent example is Taylor Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale," the lead single off the soundtrack to Valentine's Day. The song was on iTunes for a matter of hours before it hit #1. (As for the fate of the movie? It has to compete with The Wolfman V-Day weekend, so we'll see whether America is in the mood to celebrate romance or, er, not.) But how does Swift's "Fairytale" compare to the work of other recording artists who've tied in new songs with their big-screen appearances? Let's take a second to reflect on the good, the bad, and hell yes, Glitter: More »

Top 5 Pop Stars Who Can Actually Act

Fri Nov 13 2009 by Becky Bain

Yesterday we brought you the Top 5 Pop Stars Who Should Never Act Again, where, miraculously, Mariah Carey was kept off the list because of her work in Precious. (Okay, her part only lasts two scenes and she sat at a desk the whole time, but progress is progress.) Unfortunately, she’s still not quite skilled enough to make today’s list of pop singers who have proven they’ve actually got some acting chops. More »

Our friends at The Awl have debuted Ryan Adams’ video-game column, and it is a delight, looking back on the old-school console game Gorf while mulling over the possibility of Danzig and Whitesnake squaring off at an arcade. There’s also a video co-directed by Adams and his wife, noted Jandek enthusiast Amanda Adams (a.k.a. Mandy Moore). [The Awl] More »

Mandy Moore’s Secret Weapon Might Be Her Intense Awkwardness

Fri Jun 12 2009 by Maura

I’ve spent some time with Mandy Moore’s latest attempt to break free of her teenpop bonds Amanda Leigh since it came out, and one word keeps coming to mind: Disarming. The songs are quite good, but there’s an odd feeling of placelessness about it; it doesn’t have much of a sense of time, or even locale, despite references to rivers and summers and dells. The video for the album’s first single, the snappy “I Could Break Your Heart Every Day Of The Week,” is kind of a perfect showcase for how the record sounds OK on the surface, yet has a queasy unease lurking within! Mandy Moore Is Still Squeaky Clean

Mon Feb 16 2009 by Maura

Mandy Moore had quite the week last week, gaining both a future husband (Ryan Adams) and a detergent sponsor (Gain). While the first partnership hasn’t borne any musical fruit just yet, the latter has resulted in the first single from her forthcoming album Amanda Leigh being downloadable from a Mandy-riffic site set up by the detergent. (Annoying alert: In order to register, the site requires that you upload an image of yourself, for who knows what reason.) “I Can Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week” is a peppy little earworm that Moore co-wrote with former Candy Butcher Mike Viola; it sneaks in a lyrical reference to wrapping the lover in sheets, which I guess is supposed to be a pleasant fate because of the sweet smell of the detergent they’re washed in. Clip after the jump.

If only the 1999 version of Mandy Moore was around to cover “Umbrella”–I suspect her cover would have a lot more oomph than this ready-for-Triple-A take on the Rihanna song that Moore performed on Yahoo! Music last week. More »

Mandy Moore’s tour rider is the most minimalist–and healthy!–we’ve seen on the Smoking Gun yet. Unsurprisingly, it does not ask for any candy to be distributed backstage. More »
