everybody's doing it
The Seattle group the Dead Science has a very good new album coming out in a couple weeks called Villainaire, and in anticipation they've issued not one, but two mixtapes through their Web site. One is mixed, the other not, something lots of DJs are doing more of now—DJ /rupture's forthcoming Uproot mix is scheduled to be accompanied by Uproot the Ingredients, featuring full versions of the DJ's chosen tracks, and we've noted before the trend of MP3 versions of DJ-mix sets containing the selections unmixed.

Following the farce of mixtape fixtures DJ Drama and Don Cannon's arrest in January for piracy, Billboard reports that Universal Music Group has taken legal action against BCD Music Group, which distributes hip-hop mixtapes like the popular Gangsta Grillz series helmed by (hey!) DJ Drama and friends, for copyright infringement:

For reasons we can't begin to comprehend, someone who lives within just a block of the Idolator flophouse dumped a giant box box of cassettes on the street this afternoon, with a sign reading "FREE TAPES." The selection is like a gift from the synth-pop gods, and we plan to spend the rest of the day with Naked Eyes, General Public, and Human League pumping out of our boombox. But there was also a large selection of personal mixtapes in the box, such as the one pictured, which leaves us to wonder: For whom was this early-'90s mix made? Was he/she successfully wooed by the one-two punch of "I Wanna Sex You Up" and "Oh Sheila"? And what kind of person tosses their Maxell memories onto the street, anyway?
