Lars Ulrich Invented The Internet

When I saw Some Kind Of Monster, I was shocked to find Lars Ulrich the most sympathetic member of Metallica. With James Hetfield busy trying not to turn into The Hulk and Kirk Hammett fulfilling the "luke-warm water" role a little too well, Lars was the only member aggressively invested in making a frikkin' Metallica record. Sure, St. Anger sucked, but it wasn't for a lack of effort on his part. His recent Rolling Stone interview, however, reminds us that when taken out of a real-life Spinal Tap context, Ulrich's enthusiasm can be a bit more annoying. Seems Dave Mustaine's little Danish friend has come around on downloading. After all, if new Metallica songs were free, maybe people would be excited about them. More »

That MP3 In Your Inbox May Be From The Hot New Band H3rb4l V!4gra

Well, not yet. But PC Magazine is reporting that stock spammers have taken the initiative and are bulk-mailing MP3s that have stock tips buried within. The files have innocuous names like santana.mp3, sayyousayme.mp3 (!), or smashingpumpkins.mp3, and users who double-click on the files expecting to hear the sweet vocals of Lionel Richie are, instead, treated to "a distorted female voice advising listeners to invest in a certain stock"—the idea being that the touting will inflate the stock's price. So who's going to be the guy who takes this to the next level and slaps a backbeat on the stock-touting before sending it out to MP3 bloggers as "the next hot thing" from Chile or Brazil? Because you know that there would be at least a few people out there who would fall for that trick.

This Is Your Brain On MP3s

Despite the evangelizing of digital music partisans that it's just as good a way to listen to music as any analog format—and even if it sucks it's still the future, so you better get on board, Jack—we're all familiar with the space-saving signal loss that comes with MP3's. How often have you listened to a song on your iPod (which oblierates bass to begin with) only to find all sorts of new nuances when you slap a CD of the same song onto your stereo? (Let's not even bring vinyl into this.) Plenty of veteran industry types (and younger journalists) have been kvetching about our current hyper-compressed musical world for a few years now, but now some folks are claiming that the cruddy quality of MP3's may actually be rewiring your neurochemistry: More »

We Have A Feeling Idolator Readers Will Go Above And Beyond This Norm

A new study by the online-metric company ComScore shows that MP3 files are the most common files on computers in the U.S., with the typical home computer containing 880 MP3s and 36 Windows Media files. These numbers inspired me to check my MP3 library, and here's what I found: 12,170 MP3s, or 31 days and 12 hours worth of music. Granted, I'm probably on the higher end of the curve thanks to the near-constant stream of promotional MP3s/MP3 blog offerings that I'm adding to my library, but it made me curious: How big is your library? And do you ever prune your MP3 collection because of space/crummy song concerns? More »

Second-Hand News: A Killer Fleetwood Mac Remix

Forgive us for being late with this one, but the Trailmix remix of Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Lovin' Fun" (available below) is one of the best dance records of the year. According to Discogs, it came out originally in March, and appeared in May on the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas's edition of BBC 1's Essential Mix. "YMLF" has long been my favorite song on Rumours, and by jettisoning the chorus and concentrating on the slinky-disco intro and verses, Trailmix turn it into a robo-house gem: More »

A Posthumous Obit For Buck Owens

Idolator wasn't around when country great Buck Owens passed away, so we missed our chance to pay tribute. So here, for no good goshdarn reason—other than the fact that we've been playing his recent greatest-hits set all morning—we present two classic Owens songs: The heartbreaking "Act Naturally," which was later covered by the Beatles; and the Coulda Shoulda Woulda-worthy "Made In Japan." Take note, kids: This is what happens when you inherit a bunch of old Time-Life country collections. More »

Leak Of The Week Day: Diddy Can't Stop, Won't Stop Referencing B.I.G.

The new single, "Everything I Love," featuring cameos by Cee-Lo and Nas, and production by Kanye West. Be warned: There's a blatant Christopher Wallace cash-in shout-out at the 45-second mark, and a plug for Diddy's "Unforgivable" cologne line just over a minute later. That said, Nas' Bill Bixby reference is pretty great, and at least it sounds better than that terrible Nicole Scherzinger collaboration—but just by a bit. More »

The Skygreen Leopards' Mellow Gold

It's still early in the morning (and in the week) for the heavy stuff, so we'll save the Atari Teenage Riot remixes until everyone wakes up a bit. In the meantime, check out these two tracks from the Skygreen Leopards' Disciples Of California, due Oct. 24th. These guys are supposedly part of the Jewelled Antler freak-folk troupe—which we're pretty sure is part of a giant media prank being played on the editors of Paste—but all you really need to know is that these tracks sound like they could have been recorded in Malibu in 1968 (minus the PCP, of course). The Blood Brothers' New Album: Kicking and Screaming, But In a Good Way

Thanks to their propensity for shriek-along songs like "God Bless You, Blood Thirsty Zeppelins," Seattle spaz-punks the Blood Brothers—whom we put on we Zach Braff's playlist earlier this morning—have always had a good-sized following among noise-rock fans. But next month's blistering Young Machetes album could be the breakout that V2 Records has been banking on since signing the band a few years ago. It would be putting it mildly to say that the abrasive Machetes is not for everyone, but if you're looking for something to remind you of the days when Fugazi and Jesus Lizard ruled the earth, this is the stuff. Blog Search Engine Offers Service With A Shuffle

Blogmusik takes the concept behind MP3 aggregators like Elbo.ws and Hype Machine and sheaths it inside an adorable iPod-ish package. It's still in beta, so beware: kinks are being worked out, and the links it presents you may be expired. Still, it's so cute, right? Even when you're listening to Cannibal Corpse, the interface is totally charming. More »
