The Pitchfork Music Festival, held in Chicago's exceptionally lovely Union Park, was this weekend's other weekend-long rock marathon—and it was an exceptionally well-run collection of 'Fork-approved artists, sunshine, and opportunities to buy actual records. You can read about Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich busting out "Trigger Cut" and the heroic reception that Of Montreal garnered in lots of other places, but I had a more pressing question: What do fans of the site look like when they're AFK? I grabbed photographer/former Idolator guestblogger MTS and we ventured into the crowd.

<![CDATA[The Vault: Time Stands Still For Guv'ner]]> guvner.jpgIt's been almost a decade since New York City's Guv'ner left us, but Spectral Worship is a fine final release, one which I couldn't stop thinking about when the first Stephen Malkmus solo album, which has a similar lackadaisical vibe, came out. "Time Stands Still" is a great starting place; it has off-kilter guitar lines and cynical, yelpy barbs tossed between Charles Gansa and Pumpkin Wentzel, and it'll leave you wondering why they gave up the ghost so soon:

<![CDATA[Dead Air, Um, Dead Air: Your Guide To 2007's Top College Radio Stations]]> 353290182_849573d294.jpgAs someone who spends at least once a week making sure I don't break myriad FCC rules, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the Princeton Review's list of top college radio stations for 2007. Yeah, so everything's available online through some BitTorrent site or blog, but there's a certain thrill radio can only provide, and this list was judged on the basis of student involvement. So how do the top college stations stack up? A quick look:

WERS 88.9 FM (Emerson College)
Slogan: "Music for the Independent Mind"

A student-run, professionally managed station that broadcasts to the greater Boston area and eastern Massachussetts. A recent playlist included Joan Baez, Rogue Wave, Ellis Paul, Lightning Dust, Pavement and the National—almost in that order. Transitions are tight and the on-air talent evades the usual plagues of a college radio DJ, but with all that said, it feels almost too robotic.

WSBU 88.3 FM (St. Bonaventure University)
Slogan: "The Buzz"

Completely student-run and managed, broadcasting to upstate New York. I'd be willing to overlook the station's slogan—if it were broadcast year-round. Most recent charts included hot hits like the Shins, Muse, My Chemical Romance. Sounds like they're cribbing playlists from the teenagers on my block!

WGRE 91.5 FM (DePauw University)
Slogan: "Your Sound Alternative"

Students, where is your commitment to radio!? Another station that, sadly, does not broadcast in the summertime. I envision hundreds of bored teenagers in west central Indiana who are longing to hear Guster and the Arctic Monkeys. Look at what you've done—you've driven them to downloading!

WICB 91.7 FM (Ithaca College)
Slogan: "The station for innovation"

This station's signal spans two states and ranges from northern Pennsylvania to Lake Ontario. A recent playlist includes White Stripes, Robbers On High Street, Immaculate Machine, They Might Be Giants, and a hyperactive DJ who complains about iPhone. If I was living in Ithaca, I guess I'd be happy with just about anything. Not bad, not bad.

WVCR 88.3 FM (Siena College)
Slogan: "The Saint - We Play Anything"

If that slogan sounds cribbed from a JACK-FM commercial, you're getting warm. This student station is going where few independent stations dare to venture—formatless, shuffle-esque programming, interspersed with news. And while this station is probably a great training ground for tomorrow's radio professionals, the lack of character makes for a depressing listen.

<![CDATA[Please, Hammer, Don't Hurt Jay Reatard]]> jay-reatard.jpgIt's tough to keep up with garage punk savant Jay Reatard— does he have some sort of ongoing bet with Bob Pollard for how many side projects a guy can have? Even so, his solo releases are a godsend, drawing upon a variety of new wave influences like the Adverts. Just check the out the hiccupy reverb that drives home the chorus of "Hammer I Miss You," his 2006 single for Goner:

<![CDATA[Saatchi & Saatchi Bringing New Meaning To The Term "The Shitty Beatles"]]> luvs_150.gifSaatchi & Saatchi, the advertising geniuses behind that Kurt Cobain Doc Martens campaign, plan to market a line of Luvs diapers to the tune of "All You Need Is Love". Here's the poop—I mean, scoop:

Procter & Gamble wants Luvs to be all that parents need.

Its new "All You Need is Luvs" marketing campaign uses the classic Beatles song "All You Need is Love" to spread the word about Luvs' Bear Hug Stretch diaper.

Bear Hug Stretch is the extra stretch added to the side tabs, which affix the front and back of the diaper, at no extra cost. The campaign is designed to offer a fresh approach to keep the brand relevant and top-of-mind with mothers. Saatchi & Saatchi, N.Y., created the execution.

The tune will play an important role in this new effort. "The song helps us break through the diaper advertising clutter and simply communicate to moms that Luvs diapers are 'all you need' to keep your baby happy," Saatchi & Saatchi account manager Mark Rolland said in a statement.

In the first 30-second spot, "All You Need is Love" is played in a light rock style over a scene where a family is enjoying quality time together. The father playfully encourages his son as he plays and tumbles with his favorite teddy bear.

Call me naïve, but is this what the Baby Boomer generation has come to—marketing its nostalgia for a diaper? I'm kind of dreading the thought of how far ad agencies can take this concept.

<![CDATA[Listening Station: Bishop Allen Turns Their Camera On]]> bishop-allen-01.jpgI developed a serious crush on the lads and ladies of Bishop Allen a few years back, when I was still booking shows; they sent a press kit that included a PowerPoint presentation. Sold! "Click, Click, Click, Click" first appeared on the Brooklyn group's EP-a-month project, but its reappearance on the forthcoming The Broken String is a welcome treat, as the loopy, plucked rhythm of the original is fleshed out with vibrant percussion flourishes and twangy guitar. And "Rain" is sunnier than you'd expect—that toy piano alone will banish any blues in a 100-foot radius:

<![CDATA[Pro Gear, Pro Attitude: American Photo Has Visions Of Rock, But Fails To Paint A Pretty Picture]]> amphoto-visionsofrock.jpgI was excited to see the newest issue of American Photo had devoted itself to the inherent rockingness of photography, but knew I was in for a bumpy ride just by merely glancing at the cover, which offered a neon smorgasboard of musicians-turned-photogs: Mick Fleetwood, Lenny Kravitz, Graham Nash, Perry Farrell, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Patti Smith, John Mayer, Lou Reed, Jakob Dylan, Michael Stipe, and Bryan Adams. Really.

It wasn't like the editors of AmPhoto were batting around ideas when they came up with the music-and-photos concept—the whole issue is sponsored by Nikon, as part of their "Visions of Rock" exhibit, where you can bask in the glory of the images within.

The photos themselves vary in quality. Graham Nash, Bryan Adams (no, really), Jakob Dylan, Andy Summers (the lone place where he can be free of Sting) and Lou Reed combine excellent technique with a wide variety of subject matter—fellow musicians, royalty, street life and more—and manage to make it engaging. They're not making up superficial excuses to mask sub-par quality of their work, which is what the other participants are doing. In fact, if I was rich, I'd wager that some musicians' assistants took their photographs. (Michael Stipe, did you steal Sasha Frere-Jones' broken hard drive?)

And what kind of glitzy, attention-grabbing issue would this be without some bragging about—I mean, discussion of—expensive gear? Let the eye-glazing begin: Lou Reed brags about splurging on an expensive lens and wearing it around his neck. Yes, Lou, I'm aware it's called barium crown glass, but if I see that Contax lens dangling around your neck like one of Flavor Flav's clocks, I'm yanking it off. Adams name-drops late photographer Herb Ritts (a.k.a. the guy who made all those Chris Issak videos look awesome). Former Hole/Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur explains how she rigs her shutter release on guitar pedals to photograph while playing. A neat concept, sure, but the "WomynsFest2k7" vibe given off by the photo is just too much to handle. It's safe to say, though, that she's light years ahead of Perry Farrell, whose photographs look like outtakes from his Satellite Party-inspired Photoshop doodles.

<![CDATA[Guest Blogger Wore Out Her Welcome At The Turn Of The Millennium]]> slick.jpgLong before the Idolator flophouse ever existed, there was the Corinthian Street compound down here in sunny Philadelphia, where your guest blogger and the head Idolator used to listen to music and chat late into the evening. We joked often about putting together one of those old-fangled things called "'zines", but it never materialized. Today is the day—after several years of instant messaging and bookmark-sharing—that this becomes a reality. Behold, the power of the Internet and push-button publishing ... or something like that.

For someone who looks awful in hats, I seem to wear a lot of them these days: former roommate, blogger, radio personality, photographer, graphic designer, and contributor to outlets such as the Philadelphia City Paper, Paper Thin Walls, and Pitchfork. And for reasons that escape me, I'm currently contributing to Billboard's "Mobile Beat" blog. I do a mean rendition of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" and I'm fascinated by the musical selections of figure skaters.

OK, have I proven myself to you? Yes? Fantastic. One final thing: you can call me Maria or MTS. I won't stand for this "Maria Tessa Sciarrino" nonsense, even if it was all of my fault to begin with. If time machines become a reality, I'm jumping in one to tell my teenage self that using my full name is the stupidest thing I've done next to attending art school.
