Idolator Live-Blogs The 2008 mtvU Woodies: Yes, For Real

Well, I no longer live in student housing, Rilo Kiley is unfortunately not in the building, and I'll play the modesty card and argue that I'm not nearly as hilarious as Maura suggests, but yes, here I am again in the mtvU blogging pit (of doom). Oh, it's not all that bad. The music is really loud and the table is far too high (or maybe it's the chairs that are too low) to type comfortably, but the staff is very friendly and there are free mini-hamburgers so we'll call it even. Last year around this time, we sent Kate to the mtvU Woodies because a) she's freaking hilarious b) Rilo Kiley was playing and c) she was the only staff member who could actually get the channel, which at the time was exclusively beamed into America's dorms. (But mostly "a.") Thanks to the expansion of the digital-cable universe, mtvU is available on off-campus cable systems these days (what's up, Fios at my parents' house!), so you can get ready for what you're going to see next Wednesday night this evening, when we send Kate to liveblog the whole affair once again. Come back at 8 p.m. ET! Musical guests include the artist formerly known as Santogold (she goes by "Santi" now), Lykke Li, and Vampire Weekend with Chromeo, which oh boy that should be something. The Woodie Awards Mix Awkward Innuendo With Sincere Appreciation Of Good Deeds

Now that the MTV Video Music Awards have been put to bed, it's time for the channel's college-aged sibling, mtvU, to announce the nominations for its Woodie Awards, which have along with their deliberately snicker-inducing name an award to honor artists' philanthropic efforts, presumably so you feel bad about laughing at boner-related imagery. The nominations are all over the map, with no artist getting more than one nod. The artist of the year award—which goes by the name Woodie Of The Year—is split between Lil Wayne, Paramore, Tokyo Police Club, MGMT, and Santogold. I'd say there's a pretty obvious winner out of that bunch, but who knows, maybe the kids will surprise me. Full slate of nominees after the jump. More »

Wrapping Up The Woodies: Spank Rock! Shame! M&Ms!

Last night's scattered real-time account of The Most Irrelevant Awards Show Ever was fun and all, but did it have pictures? And cranky red carpet commentary? It did not. So here are a few photos from the evening (via Getty Images, since we didn't rate a photo pass); within the gallery, you'll find some thoughts from The Academy Is... about their popularity in the bandom community, and everything you ever wanted to know about how I gave M&Ms to Rilo Kiley.

Idolator Live-Blogs The 2007 mtvU Woodies: Bring On The (Tape-Delayed) "College Music"

Every year, mtvU holds its sorta-inappropriately-named awards show to celebrate the artists whose record labels have made a concerted effort to market to the college demographic. The channel—perhaps the last thing left under the MTV logo which actually deigns to play blocks of music videos in their entirety—is available only on campus cable, and it is neither as cutting edge, nor as anti-corporate, as it presents itself. But it doesn't have any scripted reality programs, which in this day in age makes it a bastion of integrity. So join me as mtvU attempts to put on an awards show where performers supposedly sing with their God-given voices and do mildly irreverent things that are still too edgy for regular basic cable programming. OMG! So, where's the live-blog of the mtvU Woodie Awards that we promised you starting at 7 p.m. ET? Well, I just got a frantic text message from Maura that Kate actually got thrown out of the live-blogging pit after mouthing off to Kurt Loder. No, just kidding. It turns out the live-blog will start closer to 8 p.m. ET. So come back in a half-hour!

Tonight: If An Awards Show Falls In A Forest And We Live-Blog It, Does It Make A Sound?

A reminder: We're sending Kate to the taping of the mtvU Woodie Awards, which are happening at Roseland tonight, then being broadcast on the dorm-only cable channel next week, then getting whittled down to half an hour to be aired on MTV and MTV2 at some ungodly time on a weekend. Which is why it's the perfect type of show for her to live-blog on scene, right? Because even though you may not be able to watch on TV, watching this exercise in extreme pseudo-eventing through Kate's eyes will probably be much, much more entertaining. The festivities start at 7 p.m. ET. More »

Two Nights, Two Liveblogs: Because You Shouldn't Have A Life, Either

Remember how a ringing plurality of you wanted us to liveblog the Brad Paisley-tastic 41st Annual CMA Awards, which will be airing tonight at 8 p.m. ET? Well, your wish is granted: I'll be back on the live-blogging beat this evening, having finally cast off all the demons that attached themselves to my soul the last time I did this sort of thing. (I do, however, have an emergency bottle of prosecco in the fridge, in case the Eagles' performance—oh yes are they performing tonight—drags on for longer than 10 minutes.) And tomorrow, we're sending Kate to the taping of mtvU's Woodies, since she's the only member of the Idolator staff who actually gets the channel; not only will she be in the "liveblogging pit," which I am hoping comes equipped with those plastic balls that are in the IKEA playroom, we somehow got her red-carpet access, which means that she'll get to come face-to-face with all those dudes who she's only seen through the eyes of bandom writers. And Annie Lennox. Suggest any questions you might have for them in the comments section!
