Of Montreal Get Cannibal, Bloody And Violent With “Coquet Coquette” Video

Wed Aug 18 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
The music video to "Coquet Coquette", the first single from Of Montreal's upcoming album False Priest (due out September 14th), washed ashore today and let's just say that it's not for the faint of heart. While the vid is by far the most narrative of the Athens band's usual psychedelic visual trips, it's also the darkest journey Kevin Barnes has ever taken us on. The three minute and 28 second blood-fest begins with barbarians storming a primitive island. After a gory battle, cannibalism and even necrophilia, we are left looking at the Janelle Monae collaborator and wondering, "What was that?" Click below if you think you can stomach this vid and for our attempt at decoding "Coquet  Coquette". More »

Solange Knowles And Of Montreal Give Jimmy Fallon Good “Sex Karma”

Fri Jul 30 2010 by Robbie Daw
Yo Gabba Gabba faves of Montreal and the lovely Solange Knowles followed up their live cover of Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" by appearing together on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night. The pairing saw the band decked out in white face makeup as they performed the song "Sex Karma" with mimes sitting behind them and drinking milk. Meanwhile, Solange just danced joyously and sang her parts on the track, which will appear on of Montreal's upcoming LP False Priest (out September 14—along with just about every other album). Watch the artsy mayhem below. More »

Janelle Monae Tightropes On ‘Lopez Tonight’ And Jams With Of Montreal

Fri May 28 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
Is there a place left on Earth that Janelle Monae hasn't tightroped across? Our favorite "woman on a wire" appeared last night on Lopez Tonight, and once again she brought her funked-up A game. Dressed in her signature tux and saddle shoes, The ArchAndroid herself rocked the LT studio stage. Speaking of studios, we came across some footage of Janelle and her Wondaland crew messing around in Of Montreal's studios with a variation of "Smoke On The Water". Of Montreal's lead singer Kevin Barnes (who collaborated with Janelle on "Make The Bus") dances in the studio while his wife, Nina, tapes the entire jam session. Catch both a double dose of Janelle below. More »

Of Montreal “Make The Bus”, Forget To Save A Seat For Janelle Monae

Tue May 11 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
"Make The Bus", the latest single from Janelle Monae's much anticipated album The ArchAndroid, features indie pop-rock darlings Of Montreal. In theory, this collaboration would present a chance for two fearlessly innovative artists to really let their imaginations runs wild. just think: ArchAnrdroid is written through Janelle's alter ego Cindi Mayweather, and for Of Montreal's most recent album Skeletal Lamping, lead singer Kevin Barnes further explored his own alter ego "Georgie Fruit". Could these two somehow introduce their imaginary friends to one another and create great music? Listen below. More »

The 11 Best Musical Performances On ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’

Tue Apr 6 2010 by Becky Bain
Given the soul-crushing cascade of tween wannabes churning out monotonous pop junk for young audiences lately, we have plenty reason to fear for the future of America's music taste. But we're not worried. Why? Because in 2007, Yo Gabba Gabba debuted on the air.

The colorful, happy-go-lucky (and pretty trippy) Nick Jr. program was originally intended for a pre-school demographic, but has adopted a huge following among grown-up music fans by booking offbeat acts to perform on the show—from Weezer to Sean Kingston to more quirky fare like The Aquabats (which, not so coincidentally, is the band of series co-creator Christian Jacobs). Now the show, named by Entertainment Weekly as "TV's hippest kids show," has gotten so popular, the Gabba crew even performed at the White House during the annual Easter Egg Roll and are embarking on a live tour.

In the words of our favorite pint-sized Yo Gabba Gabba friend Nathaniel: Our name is Idolator, and we like to dance! If you like to dance, too, check out our list of the best 11 music acts to appear on the kiddie program, which happens to play more music than MTV does nowadays. And if you dig these original tunes, you're in luck—many of these acts will appear on the show's first official soundtrack. Music is awesome! More »

Solange Knowles And Of Montreal Cover Michael Jackson

Thu Jan 28 2010 by Becky Bain
Solange is making a guest appearance on Of Montreal's next album, and the two acts evidently had enough fun in the studio that they're now exploring how it feels to share the stage (and a live audience). But instead of performing their as-yet-unrevealed original track at Kevin Barnes & Co.'s gig at the Highline Ballroom in NYC, they treated us to a rambunctious cover of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." Catch Solange and and Kevin's joyful duet after the jump, along with another MJ-inspired clip to surface this week (and no, it doesn't have any dancing prisoners in it): More »

No. 39: Of Montreal Get “Skeletal”

Thu Dec 18 2008 by Mike Barthel

Following the unexpected critical and commercial success of Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, it seemed like Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes had painted himself into a corner. If critics had considered that album a breakthrough because of its juxtaposition of romantic dissolution and bouncy glam, he would either have to start talking about Serious Things and become a Serious Artist, completing the expected maturation, or pull back from the thematic brink to explore the maximalist glitter aesthetic that now pervaded his musical and visual gestures. Needless to say, he went with the latter.
