last night's party
Even if "Falling Slowly," Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's Oscar-winning song from Once, is a little too tepid to be your cup of tea, you have to admit that Jon Stewart bringing Irglova out to give her acceptance speech after the commercial break was a pretty sweet moment, and not even in the "insufferably twee" kind of way that would have probably resulted from a victory by one of the Enchanted songs. (Clip via Defamer.) Plus, the whole thing reminded me how much I liked the quiet, yet intense 2001 album from Hansard's band the Frames, the Steve Albini-engineered For The Birds. After the jump, the Day of the Dead-themed video for that album's track "Lay Me Down":

everybody's a winner
The Oscar nominations have been announced, and with them come this question from Jess and me: Have you seen Enchanted? Because if you have, then congratulations, you've heard three of the five nominees for Best Original Song, which went heavy on the Alan Menken and light on everything else this year. Also: Jonny Greenwood's score for There Will Be Blood was deemed ineligible for a nomination because "the majority of the music was not composed specifically for the film." Between that and the Flaming Lips snub, the organizers can kiss the idea of the Stereogum demo tuning in on Feb. 24 goodbye! Full list of music-related nominations after the jump.

Oscar Voters' Ability To Make Extra Scratch From Selling CDs Hampered By New Edict
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has banned the mailings of all "recordings, sheet music (and) musicvideos of eligible songs or scores" by potential Oscar nominees to Academy Awards voters. The ostensible reason: The Academy wanted to make sure that voters were basing their Oscar-worthy judgments on the use of nominated music "within the context of the movies," and not on the strength of the songs or scores themselves.

Because nothing says "the music of Ennio Morricone" like "the spleen-shattering vocals of Celine Dion," the Academy Awards have reportedly decided to tack her on to their tribute to the Italian composer:

We don't follow independent film too closely, so we haven't heard much about Dreamgirls, a quietly released, hype-free musical that stars Beyoncé Knowles. According to the L.A. Times, though, Knowles won't be eligible if one of the film's big numbers, "Listen," gets an Oscar nomination, as the Academy's guidelines allow for a maximum of three songwriters to be credited for a song. MTV reports on what must have been one of the most awkward sit-downs of all time:

Handicapping The Oscars' "Best Song" Category: We're Just Hoping Sting Doesn't Show Up
With Three Six Mafia and Eminem taking home the gold over the past two years, the Oscars' Best Song category may finally be out of its Randy Newman-induced daze. It's pretty much a given that the Oscar-ready Beyonce showpiece Dreamgirls will nab at least one nomination—if not more—but Variety's piece on alt-rock's potential candidates for Best Song made us wonder about the other movie-derived tunes that will fill out the category.
