Oh man, it’s almost Labor Day weekend! Which means barbecues, earlier sunsets, and the close of summer in the American mind-set. (Not to mention the ever-closer encroachment of the Video Music Awards! Ack!) So what better time to look back? Feel free to share your favorite musical experiences of the Memorial-To-Labor-Day period in this space, while you are (I hope!) waiting to go outside and enjoy the last crackles of summer. My list—which ranges from shows to finding out bits of news—after the jump. MORE »

Paul McCartney Takes Manhattan One More Time
Last night, Paul McCartney appeared on Late Show With David Letterman, which is broadcast from New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater—home, of course, to the site of his old band’s barnstorming of America via the country’s small screens. In honor of that little bit of history, the CBS braintrust arranged to have him play a show on the theater’s marquee for the faithful gathered outside (as well as those people who were just trying to get to the 1 train); the full set is streaming on CBS’ site in a video quality that’s probably higher than the maximum resolution achieved by The Ed Sullivan Show all those years ago. (There’s also an embed of the show after the jump.) MORE »

Paul McCartney On The Whole Michael Jackson Will Thing: “At Times Like This, The Press Do Tend To Make Things Up”
Paul McCartney has taken to his Web site to clear up all the confusion over whether or not Michael Jackson left his share in the publishing rights for Beatles songs to him—confusion that even gripped this reporter until the release of Jackson’s will last week. You may not be surprised to learn that he is not really a fan of the breathless-game-of-telephone state of the media as it stands right now! MORE »
Corrections
As one of our commenters noted: There was no mention of Paul McCartney getting publishing rights to the Beatles catalog in the Michael Jackson will released yesterday, which would seem to contradict earlier reports about Jackson deciding to leave him those rights upon his death. (Something tells me that more to this story will come out eventually, but for now, the fact is duly noted.) [Previously] MORE »

Report: Michael Jackson Leaving Beatles Songs To Paul McCartney
A report in the Mirror is claiming that Michael Jackson has left the publishing rights to the Beatles’ body of work–which Jackson won at auction in 1985–to Paul McCartney, with an insider telling the paper, “Michael told his lawyers he was sad he no longer talks to Sir Paul and said he wanted to make things right.” Jackson’s purchase of the publishing rights resulted in a schism developing between the two artists, who had collaborated on “Say Say Say” (above) and “The Girl Is Mine” in the years prior to the auction. UPDATE: This report is from January. [Spinner / Dailymotion] MORE »

Formerly Wealthy Musicians Now Just Rich, Thanks To The Craptastic Economy
The Times Of London’s annual Rich List has had the odd effect of proving that stars are, at their core, just like us–because they’ve affected by the global economic meltdown, too. Elton John’s net worth? Down 26%! Tom Jones? Off 24%! In fact, only three music-related entities on the British paper’s Rich List, which ranks the net worths of Britain’s wealthiest people in a 112-page magazine–Simon Cowell, Oasis’ Gallagher brothers, and Mamma Mia! producer Judy Cramer–saw their net worths increase over the past year. Yet none of them made the top 10, so sad. If you feel like stoking your class-consciousness ire, the top 10 musical entities are after the jump.
