Tue Feb 8 2011 by Becky Bain
What happens when you get the rights to cover Michael Jackson songs? You cover Michael Jackson songs as often as possible! But MJ isn't the only pop star doing double duty this week — after turning Katy Perry's "California Gurls" into a choreographed fire hazard, Glee salutes the teenage dream by performing a Xerox copy of "Firework." Gwen Stefani, Steven Tyler And More Pay Tribute To Paul McCartney

Wed Dec 29 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
Sir Paul McCartney was among the five artists recognized at the 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors, televised last night. The recent iTunes deal-maker was commended as for being, "one of the most influential and successful songwriters and musicians of all time, whose work has continuously altered both the creation and perception of music..." There to pay homage to the former Beatle (who watched from a balcony, sandwiched between Oprah and the Obamas) were Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, Idol's newest judge Steven Tyler, Dave Grohl, Norah Jones and James Taylor. Jump below to catch all of last night's performances. More »

Silly Love Songs: We Imagine The Paul McCartney Episode Of ‘Glee’

Tue Aug 3 2010 by Erika Brooks Adickman
The news broke today that Sir Paul McCartney personally sent Glee creator Ryan Murphy a mix tape of songs to consider for Season 2 of FOX musical hit. However, nowhere does Murphy reveal that all of the songs on the exclusive mix CD were Beatles tracks (and the show has already used "Hello Goodbye"). For all we know, the former Beatle might want Glee to consider using a song that his butler wrote. Personally, we're hoping that Paul is offering up some songs he wrote from his lesser-used (ahem, played out) music libraries including Wings and Badfinger. See how we think some of Sir Paul's non-Beatles songs could perfectly be incorporated into the sophomore season of Glee. More »

Jonas Brothers Cover The Beatles For Obama And Paul McCartney

Wed Jul 28 2010 by Becky Bain
President Obama awarded Sir Paul McCartney the annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, and what better way to be honored than by having the Jonas Brothers serenade you? The JoBros (who are regulars at the White House at this point) performed the 1965 hit "Drive My Car", and we have to wonder which audience member made the JoBros more nervous—McCartney, or The President of the United States. Behind-the-scenes footage, as well as their performance, awaits you below. Beep beep, beep beep, yeah! More »

‘American Idol’: The Top 9 Bring The Beatles To Life With Bizarre Instruments

Wed Apr 7 2010 by Becky Bain
American Idol's theme last night was songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but it turned into What Random Instrument Can We Bring Up On Stage? Instead of having a mentor, the Idols were on their own this week, and it appears a few of the Top 9 contestants took free range to come up with some kooky additions to their performances. Plus, the extra screen time usually reserved for the mentor to dole out advice was instead dedicated to the Idols talking about one another—a change of pace that pleasantly resulted in one of the most quote-worthy episodes of the season thus far.

After the jump, find out who did John and Paul proud, who made us hang our heads in shame, and which Scottish and Australian instruments made their TV debut on American Idol. More »

Taylor Swift Joins The Soundtrack Club—But How Does “Today Was A Fairytale” Stack Up Against The Rest?

Wed Jan 20 2010 by Becky Bain
It's pretty much a given that casting a musician in your movie guarantees they'll contribute to the film's soundtrack—and if you're lucky, you'll have a hit song to help promote your flick. The most recent example is Taylor Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale," the lead single off the soundtrack to Valentine's Day. The song was on iTunes for a matter of hours before it hit #1. (As for the fate of the movie? It has to compete with The Wolfman V-Day weekend, so we'll see whether America is in the mood to celebrate romance or, er, not.) But how does Swift's "Fairytale" compare to the work of other recording artists who've tied in new songs with their big-screen appearances? Let's take a second to reflect on the good, the bad, and hell yes, Glitter: More »
