Five words that should strike fear in your soul and make you wish "indie" never existed: James Blunt covers "Young Folks." (And no, he doesn't even whistle.) [Deaf Indie Elephants]

Whistling: It's The New Black! Or At Least The New Coke Blak!

The week before Labor Day ranks somewhere around the week between Christmas and New Year's as far as slow music-news weeks go—everyone's out of town, or dreaming about being out of town, or getting blind drunk in order to be mentally ready for the MTV Video Music Awards. But still, no slow music-news week is so slow, it requires three stories about the new trend of whistling and how said boomlet was inspired by the Swedish pop group Peter, Bjorn & John, and their catchy-beyond-all-hell track "Young Folks." The proof? A quote from someone who runs a whistler-aficionado Yahoo! Group and a bunch of twentysomethings who were presumably found while swinging on the flippity-flop. (Ah, trend stories! Your stone-soup something-outta-nothingness made you my favorite things to write during my brief stint in journalism school.) More »

Peter, Bjorn, John, and Kanye get together in Sweden and jam out "Young Folks"—we think. Thanks to the back-of-the-crowd cellphone camera quality supplied by this clip, for all we know, those bongos could be played by Ricky Ricardo. [YouTube via Pitchfork]

The Cover-Song Showcase Showdown: Swedish Popsters Go Global

The news that Peter, Bjorn & John's ubiquitous "Young Folks" had received the bluegrass treatment hit our inbox today, and we figured it would be as good a time as any to put it head-to-head with a few other versions of the song we've come across, including the German-language take on the song we unearthed a few months back. Four takes are below; give them a listen and vote for your favorite. (If only we could find out what the Stop Peter, Bjorn & John guy thinks of all these covers! Alas.) More »

Videodrone: "Young Folks"' Whistling Never Gets Lost In Translation

Germans Under Cover, the fine blog devoted to cataloging German-language tunes of popular songs, seems to have disappeared (what happened?), so we figured we'd post this Deustchy take on Peter, Bjorn & John's "Young Folks." The whistling is still intact, and singing the still-infectious melody is none other than "99 Luftballoons" chanteuse Nena, who knows a bit about swapping out English lyrics for their German counterparts. Is it too much to ask that Peter, Bjorn & John pay tribute with a Swedish-language cover of Nena's nuclear-grade hit? More »

That Peter, Bjorn, And John Protest: Whistling In The Wind

We trekked out to Waterloo Records yesterday in the name of "journalism," hoping to catch the protest against Scandinavian popsters Peter, Bjorn & John scheduled to coincide with their in-store. But upon arrival, we were greeted with a long line for the next band on the bill and not much else. Turns out the mastermind of the uprising skipped town: More »

"Harmless" Indie-Rock Outfit Inspires Howls Of Protest

Poppy Swedish trio Peter, Bjorn & John is all over the SXSW schedule this week, and that fact has made somebody so mad, he's started a whole blog about how the band is unworthy of the "biggest artist in indie rock" title. From the blog's manifesto: More »

Non-Controversial Non-Controversy Of The Week: Peter, Bjorn & John's "Whistlegate"

Anyone who's perused the music blogs in the last two weeks is well aware that Peter, Bjorn & John—the Swedish trio whose fantastic Writer's Block is finally being released stateside—is in New York City this week for a multi-venue concert run. And while the sold-out shows have been enthusiastically received by many fans, there have been rumblings that the band blew it every time they performed the whistle-led single "Young Folks." Or rather, they didn't blow it. Some comment excerpts from a BrooklynVegan.com message board regarding Tuesday night's Bowery Ballroom show: More »
