A special 10th anniversary performance of Queen‘s West End musical We Will Rock You will likely have attendees thinking they’ve seen a ghost. Guitarist Brian May revealed that band’s late frontman Freddie Mercury will appear on stage in the London production on May 14, though it’s not going to be a hologram — rather, the image will be “an optical illusion of sorts.”

“People will come out saying, ‘did we actually see Freddie?’” May told the BBC.

He also acknowledged that Dr. Dre beat Queen to the punch at Coachella last month, when Tupac Shakur virtually appeared to perform two songs on stage, and subsequently became the biggest story to emerge out of the California festival this year.

“It’s a little unfortunate they did that thing with Tupac as we’ve been trying to make Freddie appear on the stage for quite a while,” May said. “[That technique] is something we’ve looked at ourselves but I think probably for a show that runs eight shows a week it’s not really quite practical.”

By not practical, he likely means not affordable. The Tupac projection alone — which lasted for about eight minutes — cost somewhere in the ballpark of $100,000 to $400,000.

But who knows — maybe what once seemed impossible is now suddenly doable, and we’ll all be seeing Adam Lambert and Freddie Mercury on stage together?

For Glee‘s graduation episode and the Season 3 finale, “Goodbye”, the cast breaks out songs by, well, everyone: tunes by Lady Gaga, Madonna, Beyonce, Green Day, Queen, Jason Mraz and more are performed during the episode, which manages to still be only an hour long. (We’re assuming everyone’s graduation speech will be sung, since there’s no room left for actual dialogue.) American Idol‘s live elimination show on Thursday night (Apr. 26) was “over the top,” as Steven Tyler would say, bursting at the seams with three performances and a field trip (the contestants descended into the second circle of Hell a/k/a the TMZ offices). Before we learned that raspy rocker Elise Testone had tallied the fewest of the week’s 58 million votes, we were treated to the debut of the Queen Extravaganza, as well as performances by Katy Perry and Season 10′s Stefano Langone. Read on to see how it all played out.

The web-curated musicians in the Queen Extravaganza started things off with “Somebody To Love,” showcasing the lead singer’s uncanny vocal impersonation of Freddie Mercury. And although the backup singers seemed to be finding their footing, one of the guitarists did a back flip! So it was that kind of performance. Sure it wasn’t Queen, but it was still captivating.

It was good to see Ryan Seacrest was back to his amped-up self, after a rough Wednesday night in which he missed dress rehearsal because he was hooked up to an IV fighting a stomach bug. And that was before the entire nation found out his girlfriend Julianne Hough has the hots for Phillip Phillips. But we knew Seacrest was back to peak form when he tossed to Phil’s highlight reel, deadpanning that it was time to see how it went down “with ladykiller, here.” Phil appeared to be a lock for the bottom three, but Ryan was denied his cosmic retribution, because those ladies really come out of the woodwork for Phillip-squared.

Next, Season 10′s Stefano performed “I’m On A Roll.” Maybe it’s just because we have KP on the brain, but it felt like a dude’s version of a Katy Perry party-starter, (without all the twee boy band mugging you get with the One Directions of the world).

Of course, that was just a paltry appetizer for Perry’s main course. Ms. Perry dropped on-stage from the ceiling in full sexy fake Marine fatigues and purple hair (pretty sure that violates military code) to perform “Part Of Me.” Her latest meticulously engineered earworm included an extended nightvision military dance sequence. Like we said, it was an overblown night.

As for Jimmy Iovine’s critiques, they were pretty much in line with our views. However, he was ruthless with Skylar Laine‘s second song — as was America because she found herself in the bottom three.

Unsurprisingly, Hollie Cavanagh and Elise joined Skylar. But it came down to Hollie and Elise, a bottom-dwellers’ duel that ended the show’s streak of two consecutive results-show shockers. The voters ultimately decided to keep the tiny, technically skilled Hollie over the raucous, mercurial Elise. Elise left the show doing the song that resulted in her top moment of the season, “Whole Lotta Love.”

One thing before we start drooling over next week: In the TMZ segment, Jessica Sanchez admitted to having uploaded over 200 videos of herself singing on Youtube. Internet Army, FIND THEM. That is a direct order from First Lt. Perry!

Queen returned to the American Idol stage Wednesday night (Apr. 25) to perform a medley of their hits with the final six contestants. Unfortunately, Roger Taylor and Brian May traveled sans Freddie Mercury hologram. (And in case his little stint with Lady Gaga didn’t convince you, May’s still got it, people.) After the medley, each Idol sang one Queen song and then one song of their own choosing. Find out who rocked us and who’s gonna bite the dust below.

There was very little fluff (and not a single Jimmy Iovine sighting! *tear*), so let’s get right to the performances.

THE GOOD

Skylar Laine first performed Queen’s “The Show Must Go On,” an excellent choice because she was able to manipulate the melody to give it that earnest country feel she’s so good at. And then, holy s*** she channeled the “goosie” power. The song was the judges’ unanimous favorite for Round 1, and it proved she is GAME READY. Her second song, Jason Aldean‘s “Tattoos On This Town” was generic country fare, but Skylar’s combination of vocal power, poise and charisma made the performance entertaining.

Joshua Ledet wowed us with his tender second performance, a cover of “Ready For Love” by India.Arie. He held back just enough to keep from Pacino-ing the song by going into screech mode.

For the Queen round, Josh performed “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and gave it a nice neo-soul vibe. Both performances received a standing ovation from the judges because, ya know, death and taxes and all that. We loved Josh tonight, but there’s still something lost in translation over the airwaves based on how the judges squeal every time he graces the stage.

For her second song, Jessica Sanchez did a beautiful, understated rendition of Luther Vandross‘s “Dance With My Father.” The judges have been doubting her ability to make a song connect with the listener emotionally, and this silenced them. Jennifer Lopez said it may have been the best she’s ever heard someone sing that song.

Hollie Cavanagh gave a “meh” first performance, but with her second song — “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus — she redeemed herself, earning her the rare Not-Josh Standing Ovation. Graceful and near-perfect.

Elise Testone started off with Queen’s “I Want It All.” And with tambourine in hand, the season’s most inconsistent performer turned in another enthralling performance. Her voice was made to sing bluesy rock anthems that offer space to improvise.

THE SO-SO

Man, it pains us to put both Phillip Phillips performances here, but we have to because of bad song choice. First he gave us Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” which is a very fun song, but his take sounded unexciting and monotonous, partly because the vocals in this song are literally (and purposely) monotonous at points. Works when you’re in Queen, not when you’re on Idol.

Next, Phil gave us Idol‘s first Dave Matthews Band song with “The Stone,” which is near and dear to this one-time DMB obsessive’s heart. While it was a very faithful cover, he chose one of the few DMB songs with no singalong “moment” for the listener to grasp onto. In that sense, he left you wanting more — but not in the “don’t stop!” way, more like the “that’s it?” way. Also, JLo said the choice was “too obscure and artsy,” which has to be the first time since 1993 anyone has described Dave as “obscure.”

Jessica’s first song was the legendary “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and while she didn’t perform it in the back of an AMC Pacer, she did give us this (why in black-and-white, we’re not sure):

The rocking “spit in my eye-eee-eye” bridge was buttressed by two slower parts for her mini version, demonstrating great agility. But she didn’t “let go” during the rock part. It was a good vocal performance, but a mediocre rock performance.

Hollie is familiar with the good vocal/boring performance conundrum, and that’s what she gave us with Queen’s “Save Me.” It was just so obviously a Hollie song: uplifting, choir-backed, traditional. It was begging for a moment, but Hollie never cashed in on it. Her problem is that she performs like a talented but old and boring singer. The fact that she’s so young only underscores the point.

For Elise’s second outing, she performed Jimi Hendrix‘s “Bold As Love.” Sooo, about that “bluesy rock anthems with space to improvise” thing. Yeah she went a little overboard here. Elise somehow managed to make Hendrix sound like Pink at times which, while sacrilegious, was sort of impressive from an artistic standpoint. But we agree with Randy Jackson: It felt like she was trying to beat the song into submission. When you don’t deliver on a song that pretty much defines your wheelhouse, you’re probably going to see yourself in the bottom three.

THE BAD

It was a rollercoaster night, but nobody flew off the tracks.

Best of the night: With her cover of “The Show Must Go On,” Skylar Laine was last night’s queen. (See what we did there?)

Worst of the night: JLo was digging it, but Elise’s rough “Bold As Love” cover steamrolled the groovy blues of the original.

All is not lost for fans who had hoped to catch a joint performance by Adam Lambert and Queen this summer. Following the cancellation of Knebworth, England’s Sonisphere date, where the two acts were to take the stage together, there is still a stop for the fest in Moscow on June 30th. Additionally, Queen and the Trespassing crooner will play a show in Kiev that includes Elton John as part of the lineup. They also have two scheduled gigs at London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo. “Adam… of course he has this unbelievable range, like Freddie (Mercury) had range,” Queen’s Roger Taylor told Billboard. “Adam can really cover it. He’s an extraordinary singer and a real talent. I feel he fits into our sort of theatricality.”

The news that Adam Lambert would perform as Queen’s frontman at this year’s Sonisphere music festival at Knebworth was almost too good to be true. Sadly, it really is too good to be true, as the festival has been canceled. “It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012,” the rock band wrote on their Twitter page yesterday. The tweet has since been deleted, but a post on the festival’s official site confirms that the festival will not take place this year.

“Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar,” reads a statement from Team Sonisphere. “Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect.”

The other Sonisphere festivals taking place across Europe will go on as planned.

Adam responded to the news of the festival’s cancellation on his Twitter. “While I’m sad that the Sonisphere festival has been cancelled, I’m hopeful that Queen and I will share a stage again someday in the future.” Us, too, Adam. Hopefully he and Queen will be able to find another venue to perform a live set together, because the thought of this collaboration almost happening and then never coming to fruition is too much for our little rock-pop-loving hearts to bear.

Though Adam Lambert played coy when we asked about his rumored collaboration with Queen on an upcoming tour (watch our whole interview with him here), we knew something was in the works. And that “something” turns out to be a headlining spot at UK music festival Sonisphere, taking place July 6-8 at Knebworth — the site of the group’s last live performance with Freddie Mercury before his death.

“Judging by my incoming mail, this decision will make a lot of people very happy,” said Brian May in a statement. “It’s a worthy challenge for us, and I’m sure Adam would meet with Freddie’s approval! And what better place to revisit, and walk those emotional paths than Knebworth? It will be a rush.”

Lambert and Queen previously performed together on the 2009 American Idol finale as well as during the 2011 MTV EMAs. The pop star will front the legendary rock band during their headlining spot on Saturday July 7. Kiss and Faith No More will headline the other two days of the fest.

“As many suspected, I can finally confirm: I have been invited by Queen to sing one very special concert! Sonisphere at Knebworth July 7th!” tweeted Adam. “Sorry to be coy about the details the past few weeks, but I made a promise to keep it under wraps as best I could. Gonna be a surreal night!”

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Adam Lambert, one of the most exciting artists to blast onto the pop scene in the last few years. Adam’s 2009 album, For Your Entertainment, was one of the best debuts from an American Idol alum ever, but it’s his highly personal sophomore LP Trespassing that may finally prove to the masses that the man affectionately known as Glambert could be pop’s newest leading man.

It’s been some time since we had a nice long chat with Adam, and we had a lot to catch up on. During our exclusive interview with the singer, we touched on his creative process while crafting Trespassing, his favorite songs, and as for all those rumors about him touring with Queen… well, just see for yourself. Though Adam co-wrote many of the songs that appear on his debut album, he’s even more involved this time around. “I really wanted to be in control of it artistically, and [the label RCA] respected that,” said Lambert of his new album. “And once we decided we were on the same page, they said okay, you can creatively direct this thing – you can executive produce it.”

During our interview, Adam explains that he released “Better Than I Know Myself” as the album’s lead single in order to “connect emotionally” with his audience, and “give them something vocal” that also says something real. (However, he promises single #2 will have people wanting to get up and dance!)

Like a proud father, he couldn’t pick a particular song as his favorite, though he did have some moving words about his emotional ballad “Outlaws Of Love”, which was inspired by the gay rights movement. “We have a struggle and an uphill climb as a community to deal with our lives and the public and how we relate to everybody else,” said Adam. “Hopefully there is a shred of hope in it, and hopefully when people listen to it, it makes them feel a certain amount of catharsis, and they feels better after listening to it. It’s like a release.”

And though he plays coy in our interview regarding those Queen rumors, they are rumors no more — Adam officially confirmed he’ll be joining the rock band at the Sonisphere music festival this July — read all about it here.

Ever since Adam Lambert took the stage with Queen at the American Idol finale in 2009 (and again last November at the EMAs), there have been rumors flying that he’ll be filling in as the group’s frontman on a live tour. “There’s more on the horizon,” the “Better Than I Know Myself” singer confirmed to us last month when we sat down with him to discuss his album Trespassing. (Look out for the full interview soon!) Looks like he wasn’t just pulling our leg —according to UK’s Daily Star, Lambert announced that he was indeed going on tour with Queen this summer. UPDATE: Adam has since tweeted that his quotes were taken out of context, and he hasn’t confirmed any appearances yet. Dang.

“There’s no intention in my mind of replacing Freddie,” said Adam. “That’s impossible. The way I’m choosing to view it is that it’s a great honor and one I’m in no way going to shirk… Being asked to front Queen is the best thing that can possibly happen.”

“He has grown into a really great performer with an astonishing voice with a range that’s great,” Queen’s drummer Roger Taylor told Billboard back in December. “We would like to work with him again. There’s nothing signed just yet but we’re talking about live dates. It could be very exciting.”

There is no schedule yet reported, besides dates at Knebworth in England, where Queen played their final gig with Mercury in 1986 before his death in 1991.

Even more posthumous music from Michael Jackson is to be released, following last year’s Michael compilation. MTV UK reports that the late King Of Pop’s estate has given permission to rock legends Queen, who recently performed with Adam Lambert at the MTV Europe Music Awards, to finish production on tracks Jackson recorded in the early 1980s with the band’s frontman Freddie Mercury. “The Michael Jackson estate are happy for us to go ahead with the music,” said Queen’s guitarist Brian May. “But it’s not something that we can rush.” We’re dying to know what this material sounds like! With her hair pulled back, Lady Gaga took the stage at last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards in Belfast while wearing a red tiled outfit — complete with a giant fanned-out skirt — and belted out her latest Born This Way single “Marry The Night”. And, indeed, Mother Monster truly seemed to be wed to the evening, as everything seemed to be going right for her: she emerged as the big MTV EMA winner, with four new trophies to take home. The only actual European artist to win at the MTV Europe Music Awards this year was “Someone Like You” songstress Adele, who picked up the prize for MTV UK & Ireland Act. South Korean boy band BIGBANG won Best Worldwide.

A bit of an unexpected twist came when Hayden Panettiere attempted to present Lady Gaga with the award for Best Song, but was interrupted by a naked man who ran across the stage before he finally walked up and engaged in nervous conversation with the actress. “Oh my god,” Panettiere laughed as the man stood beside her. “Um, hello there.”

Adam Lambert & Queen — ”The Show Must Go On” / “We Will Rock You” / “We Are The Champions” (MTV EMA)

Lady Gaga and Queen’s Brian May struck quite a friendship after he lent his guitar-slaying prowess on her single “You And I” and appeared during her performance of the song at the 2011 VMAs. May was so taken with the pop star, in fact, that he reportedly wants Gaga — who got her stage name from Queen song “Radio Ga Ga” — to take over Freddie Mercury’s role as the lead singer of the band. Say wha?

Speaking to the UK’s Daily Express at the BMI Awards, May discussed a possible solution to the “singer problem” they’ve had since Freddie Mercury’s passing in two decades ago.

“We get a lot of offers to work with other people,” he said. “I worked with Lady Gaga and she’s very creative and is someone we’ve talked about singing, fronting the band with. She’s not just a singer, she writes her own material… Lady Gaga has said she would like to do something with us.”

Look, we don’t want to break the bad (obvious) news to you as you daydream of Lady Gaga dressing up like Jo Calderone and touring around the country with Queen, singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You” and “Don’t Stop Me Now”, but this is never going to actually happen. Never. Perhaps the two acts will perform together again in some context, but the woman is busy singing her own damn songs and preparing her own Born This Way tour. She’s doing just fine as a solo act, thankyouverymuch.

While performing in Nice, France as a warm-up to her headlining gig at Glastonbury this weekend, Beyonce busted out songs from all four of her solo albums, and even squeezed in a Destiny’s Child medley for good measure. Sure, she missed a few lyrics — but we barely noticed as we’re too distracted watching Bey’s mane caught in the breeze of that wind machine. Of course, had the song been an American standard sung at sporting events, we’d surely be calling the pop star a traitor to her country — but since it’s not, Bey’s flub will probably be forgotten about by this time tomorrow. (Let’s just hope she learns the words if she plans to tackle the song again this Sunday night at Glastonbury.)

For the second time in one week, Glee is covering the King of Pop — on Sunday it was “Thriller”, and Artie takes on “P.Y.T.” in tonight’s Valentine’s Day-themed episode, “Silly Love Songs”. We still haven’t tired of the Warblers — Darren Criss-starring spinoff, please? — but the other three covers could not be any less imaginative in their copycat arrangement. Honestly, did they recreate any of the instrumentation of “Firework”, or just add Lea’s vocals on top of the original track?

But let’s focus on the positive, shall we – at least Kevin McHale’s version of “P.Y.T.” is more than an robotized novelty.
