The sentencing was preceded by a weeping Remy telling the judge that her larger-than-life persona was merely a figment of the media's imagination, and that it was created by record executives for the purposes of moving product:

"Remy Ma is not even close to who I am," she said through tears. "I'm not a thug. I'm not a hardcore anything. I have feelings and emotions, and I'm a human being like anybody else. I'm Remy Smith."

Perhaps this means that her sniping about C.O.'s lower-than-her net worth was also part of her label's marketing plan. She also took time out to apologize, sort of, to her victim, who was in the courtroom but who didn't get a direct look from Remy:

"I apologize," she said, "and I'm sorry for not saving you. I feel so bad for all the physical and mental pain you went through, and go through. Myself, I have a lifetime scar on my face. So I know the pain you feel when I look in the mirror."

I'm surprised that she didn't add, "But if I got through it, so can you!" to her motivational speech, if only to seal the cluelessness of said statement.

<![CDATA[Inappropriate Bridal Gift Results In Hasty Cancellation Of Papoose-Remy Ma Nuptials]]> Yesterday was supposed to be a beautiful day for Remy Ma, despite her current incarceration in New York's Rikers Island; she was set to be married to her boyfriend, Papoose, in a ceremony that would serve as a prelude for today's sentencing for a shooting incident outside the now-shuttered nightclub Pizza Bar and allow Papoose to come by for conjugal visits while she was in the pokey. (Um, no pun intended) But thanks to Papoose taking the "brides need to have something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue" maxim to heights that may have been inappropriate for the wedding's jailhouse setting—i.e. attempting to slip Remy a universal handcuff key before the nuptials began—the wedding was over before anyone could walk down the aisle.

The contraband was quickly confiscated by eagle-eyed guards, according to city correction officials. Papoose was kicked off the island without ever seeing the woman to whose cuffs he once held the key.

The wedding was kaput.

"Get out of my face," Papoose snarled at a reporter yesterday as he returned to his Cadillac SUV in the jail's parking lot.

"I don't want to talk," said the still-single "Mix Tape King," who had worn his Sunday-best Yankee cap for the occasion.

"You all write racist articles."

Not to defend Papoose's contraband, but the phrase "Sunday-best Yankee cap" would seem to back up his statement. Anyway, Remy is expected to be all contrite at this morning's sentencing, but given that she was on Hot 97 last week bragging about how she makes more money than the jail guards, I suspect that the judge will see it as something of an act and that she'll be in the pen for at least a few years.

Remy is being held at Rikers without bail until her sentencing, which could keep her in the pokey for as long as 25 years, although sources are claiming that she'll probably only have to serve three to five. <![CDATA[Rapper Papoose To Marry Remy Ma in Jail, Punch Fat Joe in the Face (Again)]]> papoose.jpg
Papoose, vocally reminiscent of Jay-Z and physically reminiscent of an emaciated Panthro, swears he will marry troubled rapper Remy Ma, despite her assault conviction last Thursday, which could potentially put her in jail for the next 25 years. "We always wanted to keep our personal lives personal, so that's why we never went public with our relationship," said Papoose. "Right now, I just feel like she gotta live through me. Yes, we were scheduled to be married on a yacht April 27th. But due to circumstances beyond our control, we are now making arrangements to be married in prison." if this wasn't enough chaos, Papoose is still dealing with the fallout of punching Fat Joe in the face. Something the rapper, whose long-delayed debut album has yet to be released, is willing to do again.

Papoose repeatedly claims that he doesn't think about Fat Joe in this recent interview, but three minutes into his description of the beef, you start to think he might be protesting too much.

"Dude is bragging about putting out albums, but...dude is bragging about having a hit record. But what's the point of having a record when the album flops?" Such is the logic of a man who, thanks to years of woes, has failed to put out either a single or an album of his own. Ever. Could be worse: He could be named Papoose. Oh, wait.

Remy—born Remy Jones—was standing trial on a July 14 incident outside the now-shuttered (and really overrated when it was open) Manhattan nightclub Pizza Bar, during which she fired a shot at a "friend" after a quarrel over some stolen money. Remy Ma's defense, which conceded that while she did engage in some light gunplay it was all accidental, didn't convince the jury. She now faces up to 25 years in prison. [AP / Photo: AP]

A $10 million civil suit stemming from an incident in July where she allegedly shot another woman after the two argued over money that was missing from the rapper's purse. Also, the purveyor of overpriced "haute" pizza, shitty cocktails, and annoying Meatpacking District attitude where the argument began—Pizza Bar, on 9th Avenue in New York City—is now closed. Let this be a lesson to all of you: When you're craving a late-night slice, avoid any/all places that offer bottle service. Look how badly that decision ended for Remy! [MTV]

<![CDATA["Hip-Hop Cops": Fact Or <s>Fiction</s> Fact Everyone In Power Lies About?]]> Aside from persistent complaints/cover stories on the part of the rap community and Chamillionaire's beloved-by-TRL video spoof, the "hip-hop police," a squad devoted to tracking the movements of rappers—a profession which at some point got conflated with "suspected criminals" by police departments nationwide—have remained one of those rumors officials can dismiss with a "where's the proof?" wave of the hand. Village Voice writer Adam Matthews documents one run-in between suspected hip-hop cops and an "anonymous rapper," capturing a little of the commonplace harassment, organizational incompetence, and frustrating "blue wall" silence that now characterizes the shady relationship between law enforcement and hip-hop stars:

It was a rare treat when members of the phantom unit materialized outside the West Village club S.O.B.'s on September 18. After a concert thrown by AllHipHop.com, two men in their thirties accosted an up-and-coming rapper and told him to come with them. When he resisted, he says, the men—one white, one black—flashed badges and identified themselves as members of the "hip-hop police." They interrogated the rapper outside the venue. "It really bugged me out," says the rapper, who requested anonymity. "There was no possible way [they] could know certain details unless they were in the VIP section." When the rapper began to talk back, he says, the undercover Hip-Hop Cops advised his manager to quickly put him in a cab. The manager complied. When the rapper returned home, he adds, he noticed a black car with tinted windows outside his apartment.

Unfortunately, if not suprisingly, no one within the NYPD would go on record for Matthews about either the specific incident, which took place on Sept. 18, or the hip-hop squad itself, and the closest he gets to confirmation of its existence comes from Remy Ma's lawyer and a retired cop:

This makes sense, according to retired NYPD detective Derrick Parker, who founded the unit and later wrote a book, The Notorious C.O.P., that outed it. Parker says that before any major hip-hop event, the Hip-Hop Cops devise a game plan. "They had to do it for 50's [recent] five-borough tour," recalls Parker. "They were doing the surveillance and pre-op plan."

And even more than the Nixon-era rubbishing of civil liberties, the frustrating part, as Matthews notes, is that "how effective the Hip-Hop Cops are is another matter," since they missed an actual brawl at the same club by only a day.

<![CDATA[Remy Ma's Eventful Weekend Includes Order Of Pizza With Extra Lead]]> AP061007027297%282%29.jpgBronx rapper, Fat Joe associate, and wannabe martyr Remy Ma is facing an attempted murder charge after a weekend incident at the New York lounge Pizza Bar, where she allegedly shot a cohort after an argument over $2000. Remy is currently out on bail and she's pleading not guilty to the charges, which also include assault and possession of a weapon. But cheer up, Remy—if forensics link you to the shooting, I've figured out a perfect affirmative defense: Having eaten at the dopey Meatpacking District eatery myself, I completely understand why one would be sent into a firearm-toting rage after seeing the bill for their sub-Lean Cuisine attempts at 'za.
