Is Lady Gaga’s Beef With Christina Aguilera Her Best Feud Yet?

Thu Apr 15 2010 by Becky Bain
Perhaps it's all just part of the Fame, but we're shaking our heads at the number — and diversity — of respected music stars who have taken aim at pop queen Lady Gaga lately. It's been a long time since a mainstream star has triggered so much open, public debate over every aspect of their art. Some (Roisin Murphy, Kerli, etc.) charge that Gaga jacked their style or look. Others (Team Aguilera) accuse her of ripping off their music, while M.I.A. blasts her for adopting avant-garde style without the substance (see them face off in pics here). How long can Gaga remain on top when the rest of the pop world is creating such a toxic atmosphere around her? More »

Did Lady Gaga Pinch This Look From Roisin Murphy?

Wed Mar 3 2010 by Robbie Daw
In early January, Roisin Murphy's retro-sounding dance jam "Momma's Place" popped up to kick 2010 off with a proper thumping bassline. (Surprisingly, an EP of the song's mixes is even available on U.S. iTunes.) But after seeing Lady Gaga traipsing around London the other day with a giant metallic lobster stuck to her noggin, our thoughts once again turned to Roisin—because, after all, haven't we seen a dancefloor diva with crustacean attached to her head before? Roisin Murphy Goes Old School With ‘Momma’s Place’

Tue Jan 5 2010 by Robbie Daw
Chunky orchestra hits, house piano chords and Roisin Murphy were simply made to go together. Case in point: the Irish singer's new retro-sounding dance jam "Momma's Place"—which is actually a massive improvement over her last single "Orally Fixated."

Murphy gave birth to her daughter Clodagh Henwood in December. Thankfully, unlike some singers, it doesn't appear as if she'll be taking four years off to raise the little bugger. "Momma's Place" is officially released on January 18 in the U.K. Give it a whirl below. More »

Róisín Murphy Has A Hunger

Mon Nov 2 2009 by Maura

Irish dance diva/ Lady GaGa inspiration Róisín Murphy’s new single “Orally Fixated” is, lyrically, about as subtle as a hot fudge sundae topped with chocolate-covered pretzels and peanut butter and whipped cream, but oh does it sound good. It’s glitchy and giddy, with Murphy’s voice imperiously gliding over the proceedings, admonishing a greedy lover—although if my first few listens are to be trusted, this track will only get better the more I gorge on it. (Also, I was really not expecting one of the best guitar solos of recent memory to emanate from this particular corner of the pop-music world, but then again, the solo is becoming something of a lost art in music generally these days.) Roisin Murphy Knows That Lady GaGa’s Imitation Is In Fact Flattery

Tue Aug 11 2009 by Maura

Yesterday the news went around that Irish dance innovator Roisin Murphy had called out the steamroller that is Lady GaGa for ripping off her style, and the speaking-up was cheered, as the similarities between the two performers’ looks had been a point of contention for a while among connoisseurs of really good pop music. As it turned out, though, Murphy was in fact the victim of another game of Press Telephone, and issued a statement yesterday entitled “STOP PRESS! WHEN SHOULDER PADS CLASH!!” It read, in part, “I respect Lady Gaga’s work as an artist and as a fellow fashion icon. She is a very talented performer, playing the piano, singing live and dancing too. I Don’t Care about Shoulder pads!” Of course, Murphy’s lack of being bothered didn’t stop a member of Oh No They Didn’t from putting together a matrix of Roisin and GaGa similarities. And, well… it’s very striking, to say the least. More »

Róisín Murphy, Chaka Khan, And Micachu Can Read Your Thoughts Right Now

Tue Jul 14 2009 by Maura

Chaka Khan has teamed up with five other female musicians—Róisín Murphy, Sinéad O’Connor, Micachu, thecocknbullkid, and Alessi’s Ark—and recorded a cover of her disco classic “I’m Every Woman” to benefit the British charity ActionAid, which tries to help women who are living in impoverished conditions around the world.
