PHOTOS: Lilith Fair 2010 Makes A Stop In Indiana
Despite the unfortunate circumstances that lead to some major artists pulling out of the 2010 Lilith Fair, the show must go on. Last night the “Celebration Of Women In Music”, set up camp in Indianapolis. The femme festival included Miranda Lambert, Dixie Chicks Martie Maguire and Emily Robison’s side project Court Yard Hounds, Mary J. Blige (who gave performed her amazing cover of “Stairway To Heaven”) and of course, Sarah McLachlan. Flip through to see all the Lilith action you missed, or for those of you in Detroit consider it a sneak preview for the performances you’ll be getting later today. Sad-Song-Stuffed British Compilation Album Provides Most Compelling Excuse For “Death By Audio” Yet
Britain is no stranger to the hastily assembled compilation album; why, the country’s Best… Albums Ever! series alone has entrants that honor air guitar, barbecues, and girl power. But the compilation Time To Say Goodbye kind of takes things to a new level. The two-disc set–which, the chart-watching site Popjustice notes, came out shortly after the death of British reality-TV star Jade Goody captivated the country and put it in a “wallowing, boo-hoo… mood”–is so chock-full of sad songs, one almost hopes that Big Fun is hidden in there as a secret bonus track. Not to mention that it has a cover that inadvertently recalls Whipped Cream And Other Delights, no doubt to entice people who might be a little turned off by the crazily depressive nature of an album that sequences “Over The Rainbow” back-to-back with “Candle In The Wind.” More »
YouTube’s Take On Columbine Is Predictable Yet Disturbing
Today is the 10th anniversary of the Columbine shootings. I was curious to see if there were any tribute-style YouTube clips about the event, since it did take place before the advent of widespread online video. Surprisingly, there are quite a few; more surprisingly, most are not altogether different from the graduation montages I looked at a little while back. Both are sort of sad, wistful, and nostalgic, and accompanied by very similar tunes–but instead of fun in the sun, you get pictures of horror and loss and death. But then they take an odd turn. Let’s take a look. More »
What Is The “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” Of Today?
Here are a few facts about me as a youngster. 1) I was a camp counselor. 2) I could use computers. 3) I knew something about music. 4) I had a tendency to take on too much responsibility. Add all that up, and you get involved in a lot of photo montages from graduations or end-of-session assemblies. Back in the 90s, there were a few obvious choices for soundtrack, no-brainers that worked every time. For a while, it was Sarah McLaughlin’s “I Will Remember You,” but in 1997 came Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life).” Why was it so perfect? It wasn’t just the nail-on-the-head lyrics, but the wistful, bittersweet tone of the music that someone made you want to put your arms around the smelly, t-shirted frames of people you had spent far too much time around in the past weeks and sway back and forth. But what, I wondered, are kids using today for their montages? I took to YouTube to find out. More »
