It doesn’t get more official than this. Reports of Britney Spears and Demi Lovato joining the judges’ panel on The X Factor have been confirmed by a twitpic, uploaded on Britney’s Twitter with the hashtag’s #britneyxfactor and #SimonBritneyDemiLA. The pop stars, posing alongside their co-judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, are in New York for Fox’s Upfront Presentation, during which the network’s upcoming season is announced.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join The X Factor judging panel,” Spears said in a statement. “I’m a huge fan of the show and now I get to be a part of the action. Simon and L.A. better watch out!”

Demi echoes her enthusiasm: “I’m so thrilled to join this legendary group of judges on [the show],” she says. “To be able to spend each week with Simon, L.A. and Britney watching the best that America has to offer is truly a dream come true.”

Reports that Cowell was hoping to nab Spears for the show have been circling ever since the firings of former judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul. After being offered $10 million for the gig, Britney reportedly demanded $16 million instead. She ultimately walked away with a payday of $15 million for one season of work. (Way to haggle her down, X Factor.)

In the last few years, Britney Spears has kept interviews to a minimum, and even the chats she gave seemed to be lacking depth. Finally, it looks like Brit will be free to speak her mind — and help aspiring singers in the process. Though neither Fox nor Spears’ reps have yet to confirm the news, E! Online reports that the pop star and producers of The X Factor have agreed on a $15 million payday for Britney to join the show as a judge. (That buys a whole lot of vanilla-scented candles!) If this comes to pass, Spears will be the highest paid judge on reality TV, beating out Jennifer Lopez‘s $12 millon fee she gets for her work on American Idol. 

Spears was reportedly offered $10 million to join the US edition of the competition show for its second season, a smart move for a show which struggled finding a die-hard audition for its debut season. Britney’s team responded by demanding $16 million, and it appears that a compromise was reached at $15 million. “All they need to do now is work out the smaller points,” says a source. “The fact the money is now set, means that there is nothing stopping this from becoming a reality.

It also looks like Britney can carpool to work with her fiance (and most likely her co-conservator) Jason Trawick. Jason will reportedly come on board The X Factor as a producer. Says the source, “Jason is expected to be there every day Britney is on set. He is her rock and will help guide her through the process. He is the person she trusts the most.”

A production insider adds, “It’ll be a fun project and [Britney] is welcoming the chance to mentor up-and-coming artists. She loves the idea of helping emerging talent get the recognition they deserve and is really looking forward to being on the show.”

In addition to hiring Britney, Simon Cowell is also hiring an additional judge, and two more hosts. Though honestly, do you even need (or can afford) another judge when you’ve got Britney on your panel? 

The path One Direction has been traveling down has landed them on Saturday Night Live, the Today Show and the cover of Billboard (not to mention at the top of the album chart). But the UK boy band probably wasn’t expecting to also find themselves in legal hot water over their name, thanks to an existing American group also going by One Direction. Syco Entertainment — the label owned by Simon Cowell, who formed One Direction after they appeared on the 7th Season of The X Factor in the UK — and Sony Music are facing a $1 million lawsuit that states the British band can’t operate in U.S. jurisdiction without causing consumer confusion and destroying the goodwill of the U.S.-based doppelganger, reports The Hollywood Reporter. So just who are these US musicians?

The Reporter notes that the confusion was underscored when the “What Makes You Beautiful” crooners hit up the Today Show recently, and producers mistakenly began playing the US band of the same name’s song “2012″ as a bumper.

One Direction (US) — ”2012″

The attorney for One Direction (the American one — it’s all so confusing, we know), Peter Ross, states that his clients released their album The Light in February 2011, over a year before the UK band’s Up All Night hit US iTunes. (In England, Up All Night was released in November 2011.)

Says THR:

“But Ross maintains that Cowell’s company should have known better than to bring his band to the US as ‘One Direction.’ The attorney says that One Direction (UK) was made aware of One Direction (US) when it attempted to file an application with the US Trademark Office. (The matter is now before the Trademark Trial & Appeal Board.) ‘Rather than change their name or do anything to create confusion or avoid damage to our goodwill, they chose to press ahead and come on their tour,’ says Ross.”

The upside for the US band? “2012″ has been selling “nicely” according to THR (likely due to that pesky consumer confusion mentioned above). The downside? Comments like this on the video for “2012″: “I really hate you guys, no words can describe. Beware, Or I’ll shove some carrots up you asses! I hope kevin shits on all of you.”

After firing virtually the entire judges’ panel, clearly The X Factor is looking to revamp its image and connect to a wider audience. And there may be no better way to do that than hiring Britney Spears for the job. The Twister fan has been reportedly offered a cool $10 million to join Simon Cowell and possibly one other female judge (Janet Jackson is just one of the names in this conversation); E! Online reports that she may be holding out for an even higher figure ($16 million!). Naturally, it is Britney’s honey/agent Jason Trawick negotiating the deal. Read more below.

Sixteen million dollars is an awful lot of money, but we have to believe it would pay off for the underperforming reality show. Not only would Britney’s die-hard legion of fans tune in, but even viewers who don’t care much about talent competitions would tune in just to see Spears in action — she’s been notoriously shy about doing anything live (forget singing — even speaking!) without extensive preparation. Curiosity alone could bring hordes of viewers (including us, we’ll admit). The Hollywood Reporter says it looks like the deal may be closed by next week.

After the double firings of Paula Abdul and Nicole Sherzinger, Simon Cowell is ready to revamp his U.S. entourage for The X Factor, and he’s looking for some A-list artists to fill the surprisingly vacant judges’ panel. Janet Jackson is reportedly in preliminary talks with the music mogul for a spot on the show, though she’s keeping coy on the subject for now. “No. I am not a judge on the X Factor,” the singer told Anderson Cooper on his daytime talk show Anderson. “That’s all I really should say.” Simon announced that before her tragic death, he and Whitney Houston were close to a deal for her to become a judge. Back to the drawing board. After the bloodbath of firings that rocked the US edition of The X Factor — Steve Jones, Nicole Scherzinger, and, most surprisingly, Paula Abdul have been cut from the show — there are suddenly a ton of job openings for a new host and two new judges. (Somewhere, Cheryl Cole is laughing at all this mayhem.) After a disappointing inaugural season, it looks like the singing competition is in need of an overhaul, anyway. But who should join the judges’ panel for Season 2? Our Top 5 picks below.

5. Mariah Carey. Simon Cowell cannot stop fawning over Mimi, who kept popping up on predictions lists the last time we went through this judge guessing game. And though she’s busy recording her new album, a job on a reality competition show certainly helped Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera be welcomed back to musical relevancy.

4. Britney Spears. Brit-Brit’s taking a break now that she’s put a bow on Femme Fatale, and don’t tell us you wouldn’t watch this show every single episode just to see what Spears sounds like with no one controlling every word that comes out of her mouth. It was certainly improve the show’s ratings, even if any advice she gives about singing live would ring particularly false.

3. Cher. If you check her Twitter feed, you’ll know she’s loopy enough to be entertaining television. And if Cher tells you to stop being pitchy or engage with the audience more during your performance, you’re sure as hell going to do it. She’s Cher, after all, and she’s been doing this for longer than we’ve all been alive.

2. Ciara. Because what else is she doing?

1. No one. Just cancel the show, as it’s already viewed as an over-hyped disappointment. And it’s not like we’ll really miss one of the five billion singing competition shows currently on TV. LA Reid can put his focus back on running Epic Records, and Simon Cowell can fill the hours developing his DJ show, and continue his gigs on Britain’s Got Talent and the UK edition of The X Factor. Or just spend his days swimming through his various bank vaults filled with massive amounts of gold coins.

It turns out The X Factor may be carrying out an off-screen elimination more brutal than anything seen on its debut season. In addition to the departure of Nicole Scherzinger and Steve Jones, there’s word that pop superstar and longtime Simon Cowell colleague Paula Abdul has also been ousted from Fox TV’s would-be American Idol rival. A source tells Hollywood news blog Deadline that Abdul, Scherzinger and Jones were all asked to exit. We had no idea this is what Cowell meant when he promised Season 2 would be “a bloodbath”, but he wasn’t kidding.

Abdul told reporters after the conclusion of Season 1 (which featured the comeback win of Melania Amaro) that she expected to be back “unless something weird and bizarre happens.”

That’s one more indication that her departure from the show wasn’t her decision. We’re not expecting to see Simon and Paula this chummy again anytime soon.

Though most of America probably couldn’t pick David Guetta out of a lineup, his name and brand is bigger than ever — and Simon Cowell knows this. In a sea of singing competitions watering down primetime television, Cowell will attempt to stray from the pack (that includes himself) and launch a show searching for the world’s best new DJ. “DJs are the new rock stars,” said Cowell, whose SYCO Entertainment will team up with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment to produce. “It feels like the right time to make this show.” At least we know there won’t be any Beatles theme nights. Earlier today, The X Factor judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid, Nicole Scherzinger and eye candy host Steve Jones stopped by Ellen DeGeneres to sit and chat about the singing competition with the daytime talk show host, herself having served as a judge on American Idol briefly following Adbul’s departure. (Ah, memories.) Everyone was all smiles, particularly newcomer Jones, who beamed as he spoke about his love for LA (both the city and the man), and provided an interesting way to describe the show’s panel of judges. Nerd alert: when asked about the judges, Jones used a Star Wars motif to explain how Simon, Paula, L.A., and Nicole coexist in The X Factor galaxy. (We’re assuming Fox Broadcasting is the Death Star in this situation.)

The X Factor had his long-awaited premiere last night, and it spent much of it’s two-hour debut reminding us of all the ways in which we are not watching American Idol: the $5 million prize; the addition of duos and groups; the chance for people as young as 12 and as old as, well, younger than dead to audition; and Paula Abdul’s wardrobe finally looking flattering instead of just kooky. (Seriously, is she borrowing J.Lo’s stylist?) But the biggest difference was Simon Cowell softening up. We never thought we’d live to see the day.

To US viewers who have never seen the UK version of the show, The X Factor may have come off like an America’s Got Talent knock-off, with the similar set-up of auditioners performing in front of the judges in a giant room full of cheering viewers. In actuality, The X Factor premiered in the UK in 2004, while Got Talent — another Simon Cowell creation — started a few years later. But that doesn’t matter, because no matter which show came first, it can’t be helped that there’s already a popular talent competition just like this on the air, making this format seem like old hat. (However, we may change our minds when the judges start mentoring contestants and the real competition goes underway.)

We’ll have more to say about judges L.A. Reid, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and Cheryl Cole (oops, no we won’t!) as the weeks continue, but what we were really looking forward to — and what really disappointed — was Simon’s spot-on criticism. Sure, he was able to politely turn down senior citizen duo Dan and Vanita, as just getting on TV is prize enough for them. But when an obviously awful, arrogant contestant in a mesh top named Siameze Floyd walked on stage, and proceeded to audition for  So You Think You Can Dance? with his outrageous, maniacal dancing, not only did Paula and Cheryl put him through — Simon, the Voice Of Reason, did, too!

What is going on here? What happened? We’re not looking for the biting bad guy crushing people’s dreams, but a serious judge who won’t say yes to somebody obviously awful just because the crowd cheered for him. That’s what America’s Got Talent is for. This should be about actually making it in the music business.

“There is something kind of fascinating about you,” he tells Siameze, who barely even sung a note during his audition. “You are talented, but you are deluded… but I’m gonna say yes.” What?! Where’s the cruise-ship metaphors? Where’s the “you should sue your singing teacher” witticisms? Where’s the flat-out “That was atrocious” remarks? Who is this man, coddling instead of critiquing?

All of these televised singing shows, from Idol to The Voice to everything in between, have the same basic mission. Some have swiveling chairs, others, like The Sing-Off, focus on a cappella music, but what they all share is that they’re all simultaneously looking for a star while also trying to entertain — and people love it. We have no doubt that even without Simon sassing, The X Factor will be a hit, and it looks like America has already made it quite welcome in their homes — 12.14 million viewers tuned in to the series premiere. (Though for comparison’s sake, Modern Family – whose season premiere kicked off on ABC midway through X Factor‘s debut episode – scored 14.3 million viewers.)

We’ll continue watching, but we’re hoping the show really takes its job seriously of finding a real star and not just somebody who can bounce around a stage to keep the crowd clapping. Tonight is the US series premiere of The X Factor, and we’ve been anticipating this day ever since May 2010, when Simon Cowell said goodbye to American Idol in order to fulfill his destiny (and his bank account) as head judge and producer of his very own show. Sure, Cowell will be up to his old tricks (blunt criticism) while sitting next to his old friends (Paula Abdul!), but, as he told Jimmy Kimmel last night, The X Factor will feature plenty of changes to the standard singing competition – and that’s not including the $5 million pay day. Simon begins his sit-down with Jimmy by giving him a backhanded compliment that he looks like he’s had some work done – oh, Simon, you’re just as rude to talk show hosts as you are to pop star wannabes!

He goes on to say that besides the lack of age restrictions and the inclusion of groups, The X Factor has summoned a different breed of auditioner due to the exorbitant amount of money ($5 million, plus a recording contract) they plan to give the winner. “People want some cash now,” he explains. “All the good singers I’ve ever met in my life are greedy.”

As for the “scariest” contestant he’s had audition for the show, Simon doesn’t have to think too hard to bring up 14-year-old Brian from New York. “He is the most ruthless, ambitious, obnoxious, rude but talented person I’ve met in years. This kid is destined for greatness.”

“Did you adopt him?” asked Jimmy. Seriously! We think Simon has finally found his heir.

Fox’s off-season American Idol — aka The X Factor — has released a new promo for it’s September 21 premiere, titled “Prepare”. How does one prepare for the premiere of a new singing competition show other than remember to set their DVRs? Are there bomb shelters to hide inside, survival classes to take?
