SWV Returns With ‘I Missed Us’, First Studio Album In 14 Years!

Mon Jan 23 2012 by Erika Brooks Adickman
Well, here's some news that's knocked us right off of our feet: SWV (a.k.a. the '90s R&B sensation Sisters With Voices) is returning with their first studio album in 14 years! On April 10 — nearly 20 years after the multiplatinum success of their debut LP Right On Time — the dynamite trio will release I Missed Us. If you recall, SWV's "Right Here" recently popped up on Chris Brown's remix for "She Ain't You" — so if there ever was a perfect time for the girls to make a comeback, this is it. Below, hear "Co-Sign" the first offering from I Missed Us, and let us know if it made you weak in the knees too. More »

The SWV Ladies Join Chris Brown On The “She Ain’t You” Remix

Good news, 90's R&B fans (you know who you are) — all is right in the world again. After sampling SWV's 1993 Free Willy jam "Right Here" for his F.A.M.E. single "She Ain't You," Chris Brown has invited the dearly-missed ladies to join him on a remix of the song. Now Breezy's apocalypse-and-Bieber-free tune — which already had a strong Michael Jackson vibe, thanks to SWV's original sampling of MJ's "Human Nature" — has even more of a throwback flavor, taking us back to that En Vogue/TLC-dominated era we wish we heard more of in music these days.  Listen below. Chris Brown Pays Homage To MJ Via SWV With “She Ain’t You” Video

Mon May 2 2011 by Robbie Daw
Folks, let's get one thing clear: woefully under-appreciated (when compared to, say, En Vogue and TLC) R&B girl group SWV struck aural gold when they sampled Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" on their 1993 Free Willy soundtrack jam "Right Here." As for testy crooner Chris Brown updating SWV's version with his own lyrics in "She Ain't You," the video for which plays like a MJ homage? Well, it's mildly enjoyable. But ultimately, Breezy ain't no Coko, Taj and LeLee. Watch below! More »

Six Songs That Have A Bit Of “Thriller” In Their DNA

Thu Jun 25 2009 by Maura

The late Michael Jackson’s landmark 1982 album Thriller wasn’t a collection of songs as much as it was an event that upended the pop landscape, and birthed much of what would come in its wake. But in addition to thinking about it as a direct influence on today’s pop stars (i.e. the “I heard ‘Billie Jean’ and knew that I wanted to make music my life” narrative proffered by so many artists in the wake of his passing), one can also think about how the songs themselves were sampled by musicians who came in Jackson’s wake, deconstructed so that they became still-recognizable parts of a greater, slightly updated whole. Six of Thriller’s musical descendants after the jump. (Thanks to Idolator emeritus Jess Harvell for helping me with some of the brainstorming here.) More »
