The beloved motley crew known as the Muppets will continue its curious hookups with the pop-music world next year with the release of Muppets Remastered, a covers album on which artists of today will cover Muppets-warbled tunes of yore. According to a Muppets fansite two tracks on the comp have been announced: Weezer will pay homage to its music-video co-stars with their take on “The Rainbow Connection,” while the Fray is going to take on “Mahna Mahna” (which I fear will have the unfortunate side effect of putting poor old Rowlf to sleep). I guess it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to think that the always-synergistic Lady GaGa will somehow be involved—perhaps she will sing, and perform a water ballet, to “Miss Piggy’s Fantasy”, and thus spark a big Lady-on-Miss row? Will Any Other Song In The Hot 100 Right Now Have The Staying Power Of “I’m Yours”?
Lost in the hullabaloo over the Black Eyed Peas’ stranglehold on the Billboard Hot 100’s top spot was the news that Jason Mraz’s strummy “I’m Yours” set its own record on the singles chart this week as well; the sweet ditty has now been on the Hot 100 for 70 weeks, breaking the record set by the 69-week chart run of LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live.” MORE »

The Kidz Bop Kids Are Apparently Old Enough To Lose Their Souls To Girls So Heartless
The latest edition of the Super Mega Smash Hits… For Kids (With A Z) series Kidz Bop has been covered in this space before, but having heard their cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless” this morning, I figured it was worth bringing up again. The cover is certainly worth your time and/or your 99 cents, if only because the kids-in-unison take on the chorus adds a melancholia to the proceedings that should definitely be appropriated by Mr. West on his next album about love gone bad. (And the bridge sounds pretty psychotic!) Kanye’s ode to a toxic relationship has been covered by quite a few people lately—for example recent American Idol victor Kris Allen, who himself was “inspired” by the waily adult contemporarists The Fray. So, who wore it better? Our poll, after the jump. MORE »

Chris Cornell Is Going To Prove His Worth To You In 63 Tracks
Continuing his efforts to prove to fans that the club and the rock show can, indeed, coexist, Chris Cornell has released a mixtape in conjunction with DJ Skee based on his new solo album Scream. In addition to the Fray’s American Idol-enshrined cover of “Heartless” and a version of “Outshined” credited to Audioslave, the 63 tracks include a selection from that Jay-Z/Linkin Park album, a mashup of the “Lollipops” wielded by Lil Wayne and Framing Hanley, “Kids” so as to fulfill the required-in-2009 MGMT quotient, songs from a few bands that played Bamboozle, and a remix of Nirvana’s “Love Buzz” cover. There is also something called “Trent Reznor Speaks,” which I am going to guess is some sort of meta-Twitter dis. (The zipped version is 219 megabytes, so it’s taking a while to leech from the Internet.) Full track listing after the jump. MORE »

“American Idol” Is Ready To Be Heartless
Only three people left on American Idol! And it was the 300th episode! And there was a shoutout to “Idol Gives Back” even though that episode was canceled last year! And the judges spent way too much time fighting, because they are a bunch of children who can’t stand the idea of their time in the spotlight coming to an end next week. Ratings and reactions after the jump. MORE »

Amazon’s MP3 Pricing Plan: Looks Like They Went The “Pick Songs Out Of A Hat” Route
Amazon has entered the world of charging $1.29 for certain songs, following the lead taken by iTunes yesterday and rendering somewhat irrelevant the snarky remarks of Diggsters. By and large, iTunes’ pricing scheme has resulted in popular songs having their prices jacked up; in contrast, if there’s some logic to which songs saw a hike on Amazon, I’m certainly not seeing it.
