Steve Foley, R.I.P.

Steve Foley, who was the Replacements' final drummer—he played with the group on its last tour in 1990-91, replacing Chris Mars—died last weekend of an accidental prescription-medication overdose. I wasn't a big fan of Jim Walsh's 2007 oral history of the band, All Over But the Shouting, but Foley's contributions to the story were affecting and thoughtful, and clear-eyed about the band's legacy and his own role in it. The Replacements May Not Reunite, And Thank God

Billboard may be phrasing it differently, but it doesn't sound like the Replacements (or rather, Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg) are likely to reunite any time soon. Says Stinson, "We actually talked about it again this year, and I think there was a consensus that, you know, maybe it wasn't the right time (to reunite), or maybe it is the right time...There were some things thrown out, and there were other festivals that wanted it too, if we were going to do it. At the last minute, it just didn't seem like the right thing to do, so we didn't do it. But I think Paul and I have something to offer each other still. I think that's pretty obvious when we get together." Paul sounds even less rosy about the possibility. More »
