Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper” Gets Covered By The Veronicas

Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper”, from her forthcoming album Unbroken, is the highest-charting single yet from the former Disney actress as a solo artist. And what happens when your song becomes a hit? Cover versions pop up all over the web! After hearing Jordin Sparks’ take on Demi’s song, Aussie pop duo The Veronicas try their hand at the emotional ballad. Listen to Jess and Lisa belt out the song below.

As it turns out, Demi is actually a friend of the Origliasso twins. (They also share a producer, Toby Gad, who produced “Skyscraper” as well as tracks on both The Veronicas’ albums.) Watch them talk about covering the pop star’s single to The Hot Hits Live:

The Veronicas Wish You A Merry Christmas With A New Song

The Veronicas are sharing the joy of the season (and showing their marketing savvy) by posting new music on the wide open, news-free day that is Christmas. Aussie twins Lisa and Jess Origliasso, who also turn 25 today, share the beautifully melodic acoustic track “Could’ve Been” from their upcoming third studio album. What, you were hoping for sugar plums?

Lisa and Jess – who look so alike now they can barely tell each other apart – first wish a happy holidays to all their fans with this special holiday message, along with a preview of their upcoming album, which they’re in the process of writing. The twins revealed in a note accompanying the vid that they plan to begin recording in January.

The Veronicas – “Could’ve Been”

Although we’re bigger fans of The Veronicas’ more pumped up, powerhouse pop songs like “Forever” and “Take Me On The Floor,” this simple ballad sounds promising, and the harmonies are enchanting. Plus, watching this video of Jess play guitar while the two of them belt it out with nary a backing track is a reminder that not all pop stars depend on studio magic to put the spark in their performances. No wonder Jess and Lisa’s home country frowns on lip synching.

Tori Amos Gives Britney Spears A Sign

Last night in Oakland, Tori Amos covered Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time,” prefacing her version of the gigantic pop hit with an explanation that a fairy had told her to take on the track during that night’s show. (Perhaps the fairy was really excited by the news that Spears was in the studio with “…Baby” scribe Max Martin earlier this week?) Amos is just one of many musicians who’ve been compelled to put their own spin on “…Baby” in the decade since its release, probably because the one-two-three punch of the song’s minor-key pathos, Spears’ trapped-canary narrative, and the track’s pop perfection is too much to resist. Amos’ cover, the original, and a few other versions considered after the jump.

The original. But is it the best? Let’s find out.

Tori Amos

Wrenching and minimalist, much like her take on “Smells Like Teen Spirit” all those years ago. I only wish she’d included the bridge, because who among us hasn’t punched their fist in the air during the part when Britney drags out the “Don’t you know… I… Still… Be-lieve!” bit?

One of the Dueling Slow Versions Of This Song By Modern-Rock Radio B-Listers that caused many a message-board fight during the early portion of this decade. It’s aight.

Fountains Of Wayne

A little shaggier than Travis’ take—and for that reason, I would always side with it in the If You Had To Pick One Cover Wars.

The Veronicas

Hey, a little bit of pep! The harmonies on this version really make it for me, although they, like Amos, lose points for ditching the bridge.

Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco and the Dresden Dolls

Again, the peppier takes on the song really bring out its strengths. This version isn’t as punch-you-in-the-mouth as the original—but then again, this is a live version of the track, and I figure that if anyone can give this song its over-the-top due, it’s Amanda Palmer.
