Coachella Round-Up: Day 3

Mon Apr 19 2010 by Becky Bain
It's been a long three days living in the 90-degree Coachella bubble—we suffered through heatstroke, unrelenting traffic, and even MGMT's set, and we somehow made it to the other side with all our body parts intact. By Sunday, Coachella had slowed to a relaxed hum—that is, until Thom Yorke treated everybody to a dance party, and Gorillaz ended the fest with a colorful, funky and ultimately triumphant performance. While we smother our sunburns in aloe, check out our round-up of the last day of the desert music fest below. More »

Bloodsuckers Of Indie: “New Moon” Soundtrack To Feature Death Cab, Thom Yorke, Lykke Li, Grizzly Bear, And The Killers

Mon Sep 21 2009 by Maura

The soundtrack listing for New Moon, the latest installment in the fangirl-insanity-inducing Twilight series, has been released, and as previously insinuated, it is pretty indie-tastic, with the likes of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, Swedish enigma Lykke Li, the Jay-Z-beloved Grizzly Bear, and the one-two punch of Bon Iver and St. Vincent backing up Death Cab For Cutie’s lead single “Meet Me On The Equinox.” Muse is also contributing a remix of a song from their new album The Resistance, although Matt Bellamy sure sounds like he wanted to take the path of least, um, resistance when getting on the record: “He wants a rendition of that, but the only thing with the new film is they want the songs to be exclusive to the film. So he’s asking if I mind doing, or if we mind doing an alternative version of it.” Um, OK then! Full track listing after the jump. More »

Radiohead: Still Better Than Anyone At Keeping The Internet Interested In Their Music

Thu Aug 13 2009 by Maura

Last week, Radiohead fanboys/girls got all upset thanks to someone taking the time to type out part of a Thom Yorke Interview from the July/August issue of The Believer in which the Radiohead frontman said that his band had sworn off the album format. “None of us want to get into that creative hoo-ha of a long-play record again,” Yorke told Ross Simonini. “It’s just become such a drag. It worked with In Rainbows because we had a real fixed idea about where we were going. But we’ve all said that we can’t possibly dive into that again. It’ll kill us.” Some people took this to mean that the band was breaking up and freaked out accordingly, but apparently that statement merely meant that they’d given up on the fusty old model of releasing multiple songs under the same umbrella—because yesterday, a new song by the band wormed its way onto the Internet! Kanye West Would Like To Offer Up A New Celebrity Taxonomy

Wed May 20 2009 by Maura

In the midst of praising a sort of mediocre, but I guess well-framed paparazzi photo of Rihanna, Kanye West took some time out to offer up his thoughts on today’s biggest stars, and which current celebrities were serving as analogies of stars gone by, I guess because we live in the post-everything age. If you ever wondered which current somewhat-superstar Kanye West views as the new Jimi Hendrix and/or Roger Waters, the answers lie after the jump. More »

Radiohead Is So Mainstream Now, You Guys

Mon Jan 26 2009 by Maura

Radiohead will make its first U.S. TV appearance since 2000 in two weeks, when the band performs as part of this year’s Grammy ceremony. The band’s 2007 album In Rainbows is up for Album Of The Year against Coldplay’s Viva La Vida Etc., Ne-Yo’s Year Of The Gentleman, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, and the Robert Plant/Alison Kraus collaboration Raising Sand. T.I. is also expected to perform twice on the evening of Feb. 8—once with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West on “Swagger Like Us,” and again with Justin Timberlake on an unidentified song. (I’m pretty sure that Robyn Troup won’t be around to get ogled by the two this year, although who knows—the nostalgia cycle is pretty short these days.) A list of all the announced performers after the jump.

Thom Yorke’s Taste In Music Gets Made More Mainstream By The Man

Mon Jan 19 2009 by Maura

So, a new version of Thom Yorke’s Grammy ad, which crafts a mosaic of the Radiohead frontman’s face from the titles of various songs that have influenced him, is out there, and keen-eyed viewers will notice a few key differences between the initial print (at left, as sourced from Pop & Hiss last Tuesday) and this iteration, which is being rolled out with a TV spot in which Yorke talks about his dreams of becoming David Bowie someday. Let’s play a little game of “catch the edits,” shall we?

Thom Yorke Wants You To Watch The Grammys, Know Who Liars Are

Tue Jan 13 2009 by Maura

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, perhaps inspired to play nice by the Album of the Year nomination In Rainbows received from the Grammys this year, has lent his visage—and his taste in music—to the award ceremony’s ad campaign, in which composites of nominated stars’ faces are created from the titles and lyrics of songs that influenced their musical development. Bjork’s “Unravel,” which Yorke has previously cited as one of his favorite songs ever, gets a nod, as does Madvillain’s “Meat Grinder.” There’s also a Liars shout-out! Anyway, a TV ad narrated by Yorke (it may sound like this, a bit) is rolling out as the broadcast gets closer, but for now, there’s a spot featuring Stevie Wonder’s musical development embedded after the jump.
