Mötley Crüe’s clothing-optional drummer Tommy Lee is sitting out a few shows in the coming days because he burned his hand last week… while playing with a set of sparklers. (Perhaps he was celebrating the Fourteenth Of August?) Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx addressed his bandmate’s injury in a blog post that recalled the best bits of the band’s classic tell-all The Dirt, and announced that a dude from Sevendust would be filling in for Lee for the coming shows:

Motley has always been an interesting animal. The Magic is somewhat unstoppable because it is what it is, it’s Motley.” An incongruous mixture” to quote my digital dictionary. Even when accidents happen, we pull it together, even if only by pulling a horseshoe outta our Motley ass.:)…..

….

So to get to the point, Yes Tommy messed up his hand pretty bad, and yes accidents do happen and yes frustration does happen to everybody including Tommy who would rather play drums (even with a damaged hand) than just about anything in the whole world. But following doctor’s orders for a few shows is what we have to right now.( or cancel shows ) We all wanna say were sorry Tommy has to sit out a couple shows, But we hope to have him back up on the drums ASAP. Until then, he is at all the shows, jumping around, helping out with vocals and playing piano ever so lightly on Home Sweet Home…..

….

Now to the hero of the day…Mr. Morgan Rose, the monstrous drummer from Sevendust.Morgan flew out with only minutes to go before there were no flights left from Atlanta. He came charging in like a knight in shining armor, drum pedals and sticks in hand, stepping onstage and pretty much nailing the show top to bottom first time out. I think Morgan needs a Standing ovation for his dedication to kicking ass and helping not only Motley crue out, but the road crew and everybody else out here whose life’s would been effected. …Thank you bro…….

….

As for now, Motley Crue is a five-piece band… making history, one injury at a time…hahhaha….

Ellipses his, in case you were wondering.

This is the latest injury to plague the summer tour circuit; Aerosmith’s series of injuries eventually led to them dropping off the tour with ZZ Top, while the constant dings suffered by concert promoter Live Nation have resulted in them slashing prices every Wednesday until someone, anyone, can help them fill seats. Not to be all morbid and ask “who will be next,” but this year just seems sorta cursed, no?

Were you hoping that the Obama presidency would usher in a new era where Methods Of Mayhem—Tommy Lee’s clothing-optional rap-rock side project—felt OK about returning to the public sphere? Well, one person out there who said “yes,” today is your lucky day, as Lee has announced that there will be a follow-up to the group’s 1999 self-titled debut out sometime later this year. No word on whether Lee et al. will forego the traditional CD route and just release their new music as the backing for a tawdry celebrity sex tape yet. In the above spot, Lee and Ludacris compete to see which pimp is more eco-friendly: Lee hasn’t showered for a week, while Ludacris has filled a hot tub entirely with women instead of water.

April Fool’s! Wocka wocka! Actually, Battleground Earth will feature Tommy Lee and Ludacris driving across the country in bio-diesel buses, competing in challenges that promote green living.

The series challenges Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges and Tommy Lee to “battle against the toxic forces destroying mother earth, attempting to keep their high-wattage acts on an eco-friendly course.”

Throughout the series the stars will enlist the help of their entourage, celebrity friends and anyone else willing to lend a hand to reel in the duo’s impact on the environment. Examples of adversity they must overcome include having to run an empty tour bus on used fat from a fast-food restaurant in the middle of the Texas Panhandle.

The series will climax with a concert in LA at the Greek Theater to benefit the fire-damaged Griffith Park. Here’s a clip of Tommy Lee and a group of children helping to rescue a piece of the Wetlands.

“I am a founding member of MÖTLEY CRÜE,” he said. “Based on internal band issues aired publicly, my future with the band is uncertain. I have tried to meet with my bandmates repeatedly without success but have informed them that I’m not walking away from my band of 25 years. It troubles me that the current legal issues which were filed by the corporations against my personal manager are separating us and causing more dysfunction. I hope we can work this out amongst ourselves.”

I hope so, too. But I worry that, as per the band’s instructions, Tommy will not be able to kick the greatest addiction of all: making a total ass of himself in public.

File this under: Stuff I’m going to presume against hope is just a vicious Internet rumor because my ailing heart just couldn’t take it. But yes, Tommy Lee has apparently departed Motley Crue amidst lawsuits against the band’s former manager and claims that reality TV has rendered Lee even more of a lovable dolt than he was before. According to a press release from the band, said former manager, Carl Stubner, was playing fast and loose with the band’s money, even going so far as to hawk the band’s tickets at inflated rates that went right into his own pocket. But moreover, they claim that Stubner’s stewardship of Lee’s career has sullied the good name of the Crue itself:

The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages of more than $20 million for lost earnings and profits resulting from the defendants’ actions. The lawsuit also seeks punitive damages because, as claimed in the amended complaint, the defendants’ “despicable” actions were undertaken “fraudulently, maliciously and oppressively.”

In CRÜE’s original lawsuit, which was filed on June 18 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, three of the group’s founding members (Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil and Mick Mars) through Motley Crue Inc., claimed Stubner forced Tommy Lee to “to become engaged in ‘reality’ projects that were bad career moves for Lee, harming [Sixx, Mars, Neil and Lee], the MÖTLEY CRÜE brand and Lee’s own image.” The suit called the low-rated NBC show “Tommy Lee Goes to College” a “critical disappointment and a ratings disaster,” adding it painted Lee as “incoherent, lazy and incompetent” and made him “look like a laughing stock who could not carry a drum beat.” The suit also claims Lee’s participation on “Rock Star: Supernova” “diminished the public’s interest in Lee and their overall perception of his musical talents.”

Because Lee was so busy doing reality TV, the band says he was unavailable to tour with the CRÜE, thus causing the cancellation of several key concert dates. The band claims that they lost $8 million in ticket and merchandise revenue because of Lee’s scheduling conflicts. The band claims these conflicts were “both real and concocted” by Stubner to “leverage his control over Lee to his financial advantage and to MÖTLEY CRÜE and Lee’s detriment.”

So in the end it wasn’t flaming motorcycle death by misadventure, more drugs than a hijacked Rite Aid delivery truck, collectively drinking enough to permanently blind a bar full of bikers, multiple sex tapes of varying quality, Mick Mars’ addiction to Nerds candy, or big bad grunge that finally capsized Motley Crue but…reality TV. I just don’t know how I’m going to tell my best friend when he gets home tonight.

Tommy Lee has bravely stepped forward to tell how he was <s>pushed in the girls lockerroom</s>cruelly slapped around by noted girlyfighter Kid Rock on his Web site:

“Pamela comes and sits on my lap who I love and adore,” said Lee in the grammatically inconsistent post. He had made his presence known earlier in the night by interrupting Anderson’s introduction of Kanye West’s performance with a series of wolf whistles that prompted her to ask him to pipe down. “And also say hello to my friend Travis Barker and his wife!…..and i get a text from another friend P. Diddy and he says come sit with me…..and he’s sitting with Miss HOT Megan FOX so I go over and sit with P!”

Then, not a minute later, after Keys started her “amazing performance,” it was back to “stupid-ness,” an apparent reference to the ongoing tension between the two men. Lee said he got a tap on the shoulder from the man he affectionately referred to as “Kid Pebble.”

“I stand up and embrace him with a semi hug and say ‘Hey dude…What up’?? He punches me in the face…..well if ya wanna call it that!?….more like a b—h slap!…….Wuss!!”

After which Tommy apparently punched Kid Rock square in the jaw like a real man. And then ran home to write about it on his blog like a <s>real dork</s>civilized person.

Also: “Gramatically inconsistent,” yeah, but he is saying that he “love[s] and adore[s]” his lap. Somebody else read it that way too, right? Right??

(Well, okay, we didn’t know about this one at the time.) So it looks like Kid Rock was admonished by the police to the tune of one misdemeanor assault charge following getting into a girly fight with Tommy Lee at the Video Music Awards. Billboard reminds us that master of understatement Sway said he saw Rock “deck” Lee while others reported only seeing Mr. Ritchie slap him around. Needless to say, both brought just that much more class to the show’s sense of restraint and rectitude.

Welcome back! We missed you–we really, really missed you (slow traffic makes us needy and sad). The holidays seemed to go on forever this year–don’t you just hate it when Christmas, New Year’s, and Kill Saddam Day all run during the same week?–and while everyone was out-of-pocket, there were plenty of semi-exciting going-ons in the music world: Britney Spears got some much-needed beauty sleep. The guy we’re not allowed to talk about again got married in that country we’re not allowed to visit again. Bono inspired a rash of U2 news. And Tommy Lee, as always, kept it classy. So let’s put all the meaningless B.S. behind us and start anew, shall we? Maybe if we all work together, we can spend the next twelve months focusing less on tabloid rigmaroles, and more on good music. Or at the very least, maybe we can keep the number of tired Chinese Democracy jokes down to two a day.
