Billy Corgan Is Feeling Pretty Glorious (And Gorgeous)

Surely I'm not the only one who thinks that, at this point, the whole "band releasing a new song through Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band" angle is kind of played out, even if other media outlets are willing to lap it up like it's a dish of slightly melted vanilla ice cream. I mean, the seal has been broken. People are going plastic instead of going platinum. Big whoop. If you really want to get creative with your distribution methods, why don't you go back to the wax-cylinder route? Or 8-tracks? Plastic guitars are almost... quaint at this point. Now, that's not to say that I'm not interested in the newest song by the Smashing Pumpkins, which comes out next month in a bundle with "1979" and "The Everlasting Gaze." (You know—it's what us olds used to call a "b-side.") It's called "G.L.O.W.," after all, and anyone who had a TV that pulled in crappy syndicated channels 20 years ago knows that those letters can only stand for one thing. More »

The WWE Would Like A Little Credit For Saving Hard Rock, OK?

47 million viewers tune into a WWE broadcast each week. Both Barack Obama and John McCain have appeared recently (albeit via taped segments) on WWE Raw. But will the music industry show the media powerhouse any love? Sadly, no. More »

50 Cent will be a guest at Wrestlemania XXIV on March 30, where he'll accompany boxing champion Floyd Mayweather—who apparently uses "I Get Money" as his entrance music—to the ring before Mayweather's match with the seven-foot, 400-pound wrestler who goes by the name The Big Show. On a business level, it's smart for 50 to bring his music to new audiences, but part of me thinks that this appearance is an odd one as far as PR goes, given that 50's name popped up in a performance-enhancing drugs investigation a few months back. Maybe he just misses the excitement offered to him by trumped-up conflicts that are egged on by an all-too-eager public? [MTV]

Ashlee Simpson Tries To Transform Herself Into Le Tigre, With Middling Results

I have listened to "Rule Breaker," the latest song to emerge from Ashlee Simpson's forthcoming album Bittersweet World, about five times now, and much like when I was confronted with that other song by that other Ashley last year, I'm emerging from each listening session confused. The guitar lick—it sounds kind of sleaze-rockish! Would I enjoy it if someone who didn't sound all drunken-sorority-karaoke was on vocals? The beat—it's sort of reminding me of just-at-the-curdling-point Le Tigre! But am I being too hard on the song because the lyrics say things like "I just wanna color outside the lines / I've been reprimanded 'bout a thousand times"? This is definitely one of those tracks that needs an artist with less baggage to perform it, because the prospect of listening to it a bunch more just holds no appeal for me at all. Oh, overheated celebrity music world of today, you are so cruel to your listeners! [YouTube]
