Rap-Centric "30 Rock" Episode Provides 26 Minutes Of Pleasure

As if you needed another excuse to watch 30 Rock—it's this year's Arrested Development, only less absurdist, and way more doomed—Thursday's Source Awards-themed episode featured cameos by LL Cool J and Ghostface, an entire sub-plot based on Jay-Z's Cristal ban, and a well-placed MC Skat Kat zinger. Plus, LL jokes about Tupac. Much, much better than that time Hall & Oates were on Will & Grace.

  • Last night was the first time I've seen 30 rock because my roommate was obsessed with the OC, but now that that (embarrassingly bad in the last season) show is over, I caught Tiny Fey's little project. Nowhere as good as AD, but very good just the same. Fey is not a very funny actor, but Baldwin and Tracy Morgan make up for it. The comedy writing is obviously the best on network TV, which isn't saying all that much, but last night there were some moments: when LL Cool J ordered someone in his entourage to "get his nose back" after the effeminate PA did the thumb-as-nose trick; when wayne brady professed his love for tote bags; when Tracy was running down his litany of beefs with the entire rap industry. And any show that includes Ghostface cameos is obviously A-OK in my dossier.

  • I'm a big fan of 30 Rock and Ghostface, so last night's episode was very exciting for me. While it wasn't the best episode they've done (Jack-Tor) the bit about Tracy not wanting his kids to go to college was priceless.

  • how bad does that andy richter show look?

  • I agree that 30 Rock is probably one of the better comedy shows on TV right now....even if they rip off jokes from some other shows every so often. (The Rural Juror bit = the Bob Loblaw bit, anyone? The lawyer being black and named "Black" originally from Soap...anyone?)

Since I like this show, it will get cancelled, it's just the way it is...just like Andy Richter controls the universe...that was funny. His new show, not looking like it. The curse of being an AD cast member continues. (Tony Hale on this one.)

  • Sadly, the show is so doomed they've stopped airing new episodes in Canada. But yeah, dude, that shit is funny.

  • I can't believe how much better this show has gotten since its tepid opening episodes. It's easily my favorite new comedy this season, and probably the second or third show I reach for on the TiVo after The Office.

I also loved a couple of weeks ago, in the "I hate the troops!" [/troupes] episode, how they slipped in another reference to Jenna's "hit" single, "Muffin Top," which I read as an evisceration of Fergie's entire career.

  • Last night's episode was actually the first out of sixteen aired so far that I didn't completely love. However, upon rewatching it, I have to conclude that many of Tracy's jokes need to age... like a fine wine, maybe like Donegy Estates' vintage 2006 even.

Regardless, it's the best comedy on television right now, on any network (cable or broadcast).

  • Okay, I admit it. LL's Ridiculous is the most recent Mystery Artist. Someday, I'll be so rich my kids won't have to go to college.

  • Tracey's line about men loving guns because they're basically little metal penises had me laughing pretty hard.

  • The show is decent. It's no "The Office", but Alec Baldwin makes it worth 22 minutes a week.
