ABBA Singer Facing A Back-Taxes Waterloo

You know, if we had gotten that Swedish-pop bureau we asked for months ago, we wouldn't have missed this story from yesterday:

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — Swedish tax officials want former ABBA star Bjorn Ulvaeus to pay $2.1 million for undeclared royalties from the supergroup's hits dating back decades.

It is the second time the Swedish Tax Authority has claimed the 61-year-old singer dodged taxes by not declaring millions in royalties going back decades, officials said Thursday...

Last year, the authority claimed almost $13 million in back taxes, fees and interest on unpaid taxes related to contracts he signed before moving to England in 1984.

That might sound like a lot of money, but when you figure that Ulvaeus gets 1/100th of a cent every time a drunken step-aunt starts waddling around to "Dancing Queen" at what should have been a low-key family event, he's taking in about $3.4 million a week at this point.

  • He should give ME $2.1 million for having to see so many stupid commericals for that "Mamma Mia" show that is somehow still open on Broadway. I guess the the drunken step-aunts need something to see when they come to visit NY. After all, they saw Lion King last year....

  • I'd say "songwriter"--he was only an ABBA singer in a very very limited way (he sang a few songs, most notably "Does Your Mother Know")...
