Judging by Internet/blogosphere reaction, last night's American Idol rendition of "Float On" is clearly the most disturbing thing to ever happen to our country's yup-rock taste-barons—more disturbing than Vietnam (the war) and Vietnam (the band) combined. But the Idol singers weren't the first youth-skewing group to cheese up Modest Mouse:

AND with Johnny Marr now in the Mouse Club* (fresh coinage!) can we soon expect some pimply kid to be wailing "Shakespeare's Sister" to the addled Abdul, et al?
* and this is the most embarrassing thing to happen to him since the Smiths, yes, worse than "Boomslang," worse than saying at the Q Awards that "Liam Gallagher is one of the finest singers this country has produced," worse than the affected faux-greasy-1967-Dippity-Do Daltrey Lid.
Seriously, the JM in MM fact waits at the foot of my bed in the morning, all Killer Bob-like.
wow, that was terrible.
Man, I hated that song when it first came out, but watching that made me think the original was pretty brilliant by comparison.
Thanks, American Idol.
That was breathtaking. My breath is fully taked.
I've always preferred the version by The Floaters.
I threw one to Kidz Bop, but more for they're awesome version of "Crazy."
Honestly, from concept to execution, this American Idol version was egregious (what's with the zombie walking hippies? It's like a right-wing Night of the Living Dead).
The funniest part is that the AI people either couldn't think of any clothing for a 90s scene, or are just straight up admitting that they aren't aware of any musical trends since the 80s.
The option this poll is lacking is the polka version of "Float On" from Weird Al's last album.
The Kidz Bop version is worse, but... Man. That Idol version is so awful.
I suppose it's like saying Ebola is worse than Hantavirus. Both are really, really, really bad, and the difference is a small matter of degree.
I am now crying tears of vomit. I wish I could go back to a time where I did not know this existed.
Does anyone know about the Floaters...they had the original "Float on"...I was not all that crazy about it...but I think we should give credit where credit is due.
Have you heard the super-chipper bluegrass Iron Horse version of "Float On" (from the album Picking on Modest Mouse)? It doesn't beat either of these for sheer shock/suck value, but seriously. When (and for fuck's sake, WHY!?) did Isaac Brock become such a pop sellout hooker?
