The suits at Interscope are so impressed by the middling success of the Across The Universe soundtrack, they're reportedly planning on giving Evan Rachel Wood a recording contract: "They're betting on the 20-year-old to break free of the crossover jinx that has plagued the likes of Lindsay Lohan (also signed to a Universal subsidiary, the now dormant Casablanca). 'The general buzz is that she does have a very good voice and genuinely wants to make music,' adds another source close to the situation. 'You should hear her karaoke!'" (Yes, that's a real quote.) Considering that most young singers signed to major labels right now would totally bomb at karaoke, I'd say that's a valid compliment. The only question here is whether her singing career will involve more boomer-friendly covers, or her boyfriend producing a 'shocking' techno rock opera for her.
I thought the movie sucked. I was mortified.

And why won't people just accept it takes more then a good voice and a genuine interest in music for a worthwhile career?

That's the lesson the suits took from the success of Across the Universe? Instead, someone should be repackaging the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band soundtrack for the 30th anniversary next year.
Well, if she can do karaoke, we might get a slight reprieve from the tech-blasted voices of most of today's pop singers. On the other hand, I could see two additional scenarios: pulling an Emmy Rossum and tech-blasting the vocals anyway, or letting her boyfriend hijack the production process. I'm not sure either is a plus.
@Cos: Yeah - apparently shtupping Marilyn Manson is her way of sleeping her way to the middle.
