It's the time of the season: The outside forces that affect our fragile music-blog life-cycle (a.k.a the Circle Of Strife) are demanding that we ban some commenters; and so, hoping the keep the balance of nature in check, we analyzed two weeks' worth of pithy missives, looking for the most ill-informed, asinine or generally unfunny comments. There's only one problem.
Our commenters are all pretty smart.
Granted, as far as "problems" go, that's not so bad—it's kind of like of having a 50-hour layover in Honolulu, or contracting Sleestak allergies. But it puts us in a tough spot: How are we supposed to bust heads in a town where just about everybody has something insightful to say; where even the debates are civil; and where a tossed-off joke like "Sleestak allergies" doesn't require any hand-holding? As it turns out, you have to look for the one person who doesn't get it.
So, theHL, we bid you farewell. It wasn't so much the constant critical barbs that did you in—those we encourage—as it was the angrily fired-off "zingers" that would have been better off on the Velvet Rope. As for the rest of you, we'd like to show our appreciation the only way we know how: By playing a truly terrible '90s rap song.

Wow, what a ray of sunshine.
Now can you do something about that awful Paula Deen?
theHL, so angry.
i never understood the point of banning commenters that weren't causing serious problems... and especially making a spectacle of it by dedicating an entry to it.
but then again, i maintain that this site is coming dangerously close to jumping the shark and i come back every day as if it were the britney spears debacle in loquacious, often times not even funny blog form.
i probably just secured myself a spot on the chopping block next go 'round, huh?
This is all Nick Denton's doing.
Oh, come on! Show a little glee! If you're not going to be lively, or funny, or informative, then why comment at all? No one gives a shit about your earnest opinions.
Executions bring me great joy.
they're just mad that (s)he pulled their card on the Satellite Party post... because everyone knows that if by some fluke that album does become some sort of phenomenon to be reckoned with, they'll be all over it like pitchfork on a copy of coke rap's greatest hits.
sort of like how stereogum referred to prince as "formerly known as relevant" pre-super bowl and then...well... i think you know how that one ends.
I think this is the first time a 2 Live Crew song has ever made me feel loved.
I'm with Bob on this one. Over at Gawker, the weekly commenter executions are my second-favorite part of the week. The first, of course, being the Kreepie Kats.

Newton's 45th Law: Without some minimal discrimination, any open forum will fill up with cellar-dwellers biting SomethingAwful and calling people "fag." You can find that anywhere, if that's what you want. As long as you have to 86 a few people, you may as well be open - nay, joyous - about it.
@JackieTreehorn: I cosign on that comment. Moreover, I have a personal ritual where I read through the executed one's comments while thinking of a mid-tempo MOR song, sometimes that "Bad Day" song.
Trust me, if all of a sudden I started to embrace the Satellite Party, I'd execute myself.
i maintain that this site is coming dangerously close to jumping the shark
Hasn't complaining about stuff jumping the shark kind of jumped the shark? It's the "You go, girlfriend!" of the 00s.
I think some of his zingers would be at home on a LiveJournal community, but that's my opinion.
Jumped the shark? This site is part of gawker media. That's like saying CNN jumped the news shark. I think everyone confuses being edgy, cool, underground etc. with being pre-shark, while the term really only means relevant, interesting and true to what it is. Wikipedia taught me that, but I don't know why I still use that site, it clearly jumped the shark years ago.
People, you are all missing the point: Brian only uses the commentator executions so he post 90's rap songs... he said as much! That's why next week's executions will be accompanied with a clip of Onyx's Throw Your Guns.
My biggest question is can you be executed on another Gawker site? If Gawker kills me, will you be my Resurrector, Mr. Brian?
.....For me, it's the free music, and a fairly discerning selection. It's getting torn down faster and faster, though!
.....Idolator will have jumped the shark only if they get put out of business by the RIAA. Which would be stupid, since they're essentially supplying free advertising by posting songs.
I think they need to make these posts public because they are too lazy to write another post.
I do not see deadspin banning commentors, and they routinely have 100+ comments per entry, at night several hundred.
I love the sickening thrill of commenter-bannings! You should pull an AI on all banned commenters and force them to sing their most terrible post. For other people, the sight of me crying as I tried to croak out some of my own forced witticisms would be incredibly entertaining.
@Moonshine Mike: That's not really fair, deadspin has been around a lot longer and sports is a much easier topic to ridicule on a constant basis. It's not really conversation as much as it's a battle of one liners, very funny one-liners, but the same nonetheless.
@sparkletone: I feel sorry for you. 2 Live Crew never makes me feel anything less than loved... If by "loved", I mean looking like one of those cretins walking out of a GWAR show, but, you know, covered in veritable ejaculate, not a simulacrum of same.
As it goes, it's a three-horse race to see who can release last:
On the lead, we have Scandalous, the much-promised United Colours of Benetton style skinmag that Luke has supposedly been working on;
one furlong back, we have Chinesse Democracy;
& still well behind, but catching up, Zack de la Rocha's post-Rage solo hip-hop album.
