Only a few days after firing her manager, Kelly Clarkson has canceled her summer tour. According to People:
"Plans for Kelly Clarkson's summer tour have been shelved for now as the singer and her team re-evaluate her show's size and scope - a decision made even more difficult by the impending release of her album, My December," Paul Freundlich said in a statement.
In the same statement, LiveNation CEO Michael Rapino said: "[T]icket sales have not been what we anticipated and we came to the realization that we had bit off more than we could chew.
Pollstar lists nearly 40 dates for the tour, which was scheduled to kick off July 11th in Portland, Oregon. No word on whether this will affect the release date of My December, or, for that matter, the release date of Clive Davis' next anti-Kelly tirade.
UPDATE: Kelly has posted a statement where she calls touring "too much too soon" on her Web site—we've reprinted it in total after the jump.
Kelly Clarkson Tour Shelved - For Now [People]
"I can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to getting out there to perform for y'all. In the craziness of the music business, performing is what I look forward to doing the most, so it really is disappointing for me to have to tell you that I won't be coming out to tour this summer. The fact is that touring is just too much too soon.
But I promise you that we're going to get back out there as soon as is humanly possible to give you a show that will be even better.
Thanks for all of your love and continued support."— Kelly

Oh man. It's worse than I thought.
Fucking fuck fuck fuck! I bought two tickets the morning they went on sale... and I got great seats!
Fuck!
She should play all the country's dive-est divebars. Low revenue probably, but a lot more fun.
Man, I feel bad for her. She's going through all the fallout that usually accompanies a flop follow-up before the album's even had a chance to put up first week SoundScan numbers.
@chrisb: Me too, chris! I've never had such good seats before! I thought she had already sold out in Seattle, wasn't aware of bad ticket sales. Maxi bummer.
See, this is what happens when you bring Mike Watt into your project [www.pitchforkmedia.com] : instant jam econo! She just needs to have Watt call up Hurley, get in the van and rock any spot that will have them.
**cough!**
@KingHater: Fine fine fine.
Still, I stand by everything else.
What remains to be seen in this depressing saga, is whether the tour cancellation and manager firing is part of a heroic effort to right the Kelly ship, or just a continuation of hostilities between the two camps.
Substitute "Mariah Carey" for "Kelly Clarkson" in any of the news items involving Ms. Clarkson over the last several months, and people would be reacting with "she's having a nervous breakdown," rather than, "she's asserting her artistic integrity."
As far as I know, Kelly Clarkson hasn't shown up in her underwear trying to make out with Carson Daly and generally acting loopy. Mariah did that, though!
@brasstax: Not yet. Idolator should start placing odds on what happens next in the Kelly Clarkson saga.
50:1 Her album is delayed
10:1 Rehab
5:1 "Exhaustion"
BSG, you do make a splendid point. Econoline van+Mike Watt+sneaky club tour is like some sort of magic Tinkerbell fairy dust, but instead of making you fly, it makes Pitchfork like someone who won American Idol.
Which, honestly, is way harder than flying.
This is sad, because as far as pop music I generally don't listen to goes, I actually like Kelly Clarkson.
She either needs to build up a lot of Spears-esque ill will for me to enjoy this, or else someone else should seriously Anne Heche it to draw attention. Who in the Clarkson niche can take one for the team?
Hey, I'm rooting for her.
