To follow up on Friday's speculative post about the fate of "Gimme More," the elementary-Photoshop-user-produced cover of which is at right: Maybe it is going to tank after all, thanks to last week's Video Music Awards disaster. The latest evidence: A Reuters story on the track that's claiming that the VMAs actually sent the song's spin count into a nosedive:
"Gimme" scored Most Increased Plays on the format during its first week out, racking up 1,062 spins. Day by day, the song climbed from 225 plays on CHR/top 40 on September 5 to 269 on September 7.
Then came Spears' awkward and generally panned performance September 9 on the VMAs. The following day, "Gimme" got a jolt, jumping to 336 spins as talk of Spears' VMAs showing made the water cooler rounds. But on September 11, "Gimme" took its first spill on radio, falling to 331 spins.
Adding to those alarming numbers was a comment claiming that the "gritty" video for the song will never see the light of day, and that the VMA appearance may very well turn out to be the only promotional appearance that Spears will do for her new album, which by all accounts is still coming out in two months. True, she really has slightly bigger fish to fry right now, but still, all this news does not add up to the best outcome, and the fact that "It's Britney, bitch" has already worn out its catchphrase welcome can't be good news either.
Radio listeners may want less of "Gimme More" [Reuters]

I woke up this morning at 7:30 hearing "It's Britney, bitch", which, I thought, was some awful, awful nightmare. Nah, turns out my girlfriend downloaded the ringtone to "Gimme More", which means I'll be waking up to that for the next three months. God, make it stop....
The song is no good...it makes "Justify My Love" sound like "Lucky Star"....
She does have bigger fish to fry. Like taking a hit out on K-Fed, for example.

I'll repeat what I said last week: This song's chart performance will have more bumps, surges and dents than Brit's bikini-clad abs. Expect a post-iTunes surge, followed by a post-post-iTunes plummet, followed by either a total fade or a resurgence if the song catches on at radio.
Why do I have a bad feeling this will end up falling into the "popular because it's so bad" category. I can see hipsters "ironically" dancing to it any day now (ironically is in quotes because half of them will love it, but never admit it, and then go tell their friends how much they love Feist).
The Reuters article from 9/19 says it's turning out bad; the Billboard article from 9/17 says it's turning to good.
I just don't know who to believe anymore!
*head explodes*
*Sorry, I meant 9/16's Reuters article and 9/17 Billboard article. Here...

Sorry, I can't talk good anymore.
