New Zune Ads Prove That Microsoft Is Down With The Kids

Microsoft just flooded YouTube with a bunch of new ads for Zune, aka The Shiny Brown Turd (TM). It's no big surprise that they're going for the under-30 demographic with this product, and apparently, young people like nothing better these days than going to an overcrowded park site, breakdancing, and you know, just chillin', all while putting on their digital-media devices. It's sort of like an issue of Dirt magazine come to life.

That said, props—as these kids would no doubt say—for using a song by the 88. Damn you, savvy Zune marketers! You're forcing us to be nice!

  • Living in Los Angeles, I haven't been to Brooklyn in a long time, so obviously I don't relate to this commercial AT ALL, but doesn't it look like this was in Spain or something? I feel like I'm traveling abroad and all the kids there are breakdancing and unironically wearing these kinds of 80's throwback clothes. Like Madrid. I don't want this to come out the wrong way, but this commercial doesn't look American. Anyone else notice this?

  • Was there really some guy on a razor scooter?

Actually, I guess that works. Razor scooters did everything a skateboard does, plus some extra stuff that nobody necessarily wants. They're also bigger and not as pretty.

Zunes do everything an iPod does, plus some extra stuff that nobody necessarily wants. They're also bigger and not as pretty.

  • Does anyone wear clothing ironically, outside of a Halloween party?

But yeah, that part of Prospect Park usually contains three (3) six-year-olds playing in the stream and two (2) old ladies walking extremely slowly. The crew in the video wouldn't be so out of place at the Central Park roller disco on Sundays, but I doubt 99% of this ad's audience will care about the difference.

They seem to be going for a less glamorous vibe than the iPod, which works, but it's foiled by the logo at the end, which looks like something that might be used to advertise genetically modified drinking water.

  • At the risk of sounding uncool, I don't like the song. Way too twee for my tastes.

  • This makes me feel like Seinfeld when he just can't stand that Dockers commercial where guys are just hanging out and the girls Jerry's dating likes it. What I'm saying is I'd break up with girl if she liked this commercial.

  • Them: And where did you first hear The 88?
    Me: A Microsoft commercial.

  • @ gorillavsmarykate:

Funny you should say that, I live in Madrid and the video certainly reminded me of the Retiro park. Maybe it's the music kiosk.

I know you didn't mean it like that, but I think the ad doesn't have to be very "American". I think it's American enough (the kids are breakdancing -dancing capoeira is much more likely here) not to seem out of place in American TV, and European enough (the 60's retro fashion is strong around these parts) to appeal to young people on this side of the pond.

  • Zunes do everything an iPod does
Not quite. It's not compatible with Macs and that's a dealbreaker for me. But yeah, the FM and Wifi (especially with the way retarded DRM) are kinda superfluous.

  • Look at spinachdip making the Idolator appearance!

I like the spot, but that's not Brooklyn. Is it supposed to be? I just assumed it was anywhere USA...Isn't that the point? You don't have to be in NYC, Detroit or LA to get the best music and hang out. With Zune, it's anywhere, anytime.

That's my takeaway from it. And with this shitty new "upgrade" of iTunes that has completely corrupted my video iPod, I can't wait to use Zunes. I've had it with the Apple communists.
