This Is Not The Prince You're Looking For

A fake version of Prince's Planet Earth has been circling the Internet for the last week or so, most recently appearing on the Smoking Section; it's hard to tell who floated this copy out, but anyone who tries to play it will be treated to a batch of non-Prince tunes, including an opening dance-floor number called "When Will I Be Famous?" A few Google-lyric searches reveal that the album is most likely Push, the 1988 debut from British boy-band duo Bros. And it's just awful.

We have no idea who decided to flood the web with faux Earth editions, and we're especially curious as to why someone would pick this album in particular. Was it just a piss-taking anti-leak effort? Or is Prince trying to tell us something? If you have any idea, drop us a line at tips@idolator.com.

  • [Someone, maybe me] was looking for the then-new [redacted] one time and when [person] downloaded some tracks from [p2p file-sharing service], it turned out to me some kids screwing about with a banjo and giggling.

"Why did someone put up Wilco demos?" thought [mysterious downloader], and looked out the window at the non-virtual world, the pre-dawn mist rising off the lawns, and vowed that day to actually go outside.

  • Wow, Push was the first record I ever bought! (I guess I must have been 7, if it was released in '88). I think I was so young I didn't even release that boys weren't supposed to like them (I thought their ripped jeans were cool, see). I tried to listen to the album again years ago, ironically like, and my god, it was just dreadful. I can't bring myself to play that mp3 and remind myself again.

Sorry, nothing witty or informative to add. I just think it's really bizarre -- and pretty damn funny -- that someone would pick Bros, of all things, for a fake Prince leak.

  • There was a really good appropriation of "When Will I Be Famous" by Sascha Funke on BPitch Control a few years back. Except he trimmed the sample a little too closely so that Bros were singing "When, will I, will I be fame". Maybe that's an acceptable German use of English?

  • Good ol' Stock Aitken Waterman. Always good for quality cheese.

  • NickEddy:

That'd be Tool - 10,000 Days. Same thing happened to someone I know too.
