Well, sort of. Let's give it up for the Brit Awards, which have added a "Critics' Choice" category to select "new British acts that are being tipped to break through in 2008."
The award will be open to artists signed to a label who are set to release their debut albums in 2008.
The results for this award will be revealed on December 10 on Brits.co.uk.
The top three artists or bands the critics are backing to break through in 2008 - as well as the overall winner - will be announced.
The winner will collect their award at the Brits ceremony on February 20 and will perform live at the Brits' nominations launch party early next year.
So really, it's just code for "bands that we're going to shove down your throat no matter what over the next few months," since the winner gets picked two months in advance of the actual ceremony. Anyone else feel like "winning" this award is going to be more like a kiss of death? Maybe whoever wins this should get a free counseling session with Annuals as part of their prize pack.

Soon to be known as the Arctic Monkeys Memorial Award.
RIP
It's like the worst of both worlds for Annuals -- they released one song that will forever define them, making additional output pretty much irrelevant, and yet too few people actually heard it for them to get the residual benefits of a one-hit wonder.
Tragic, really.
