Limewire: Now With 100% More Potential For Mass Murder And Large-Scale Property Damage

limewire-logo.jpgThank God no one in their right mind uses Limewire anymore*, especially people with the kind of weapons that can kill a lot of people at once, because othewise they might have discovered exploitable weaknesses in our public transporation thanks to some intern at consulting firm Booz-Allen Hamilton stealing Paramore songs**:

Federal Transit Administration commissioned Booz-Allen Hamilton to conduct terrorist threat assessment studies of 35 of the nation's bus and rail systems to determine their vulnerability to terrorist attack. The leaked documents illustrate specific terrorist vulnerabilities to Chicago's Metra and CTA transit systems.

US Representative Mark Kirk said, "It's a stunning security lapse because it gives several important directions for a terrorist in how to attack the system. If you can download it on your home computer, then an Al-Qaeda operative in Germany can do it too." Judy Pardonnet, a Chicago Metra spokesperson, called this " ... a serious breach of security." The Federal Transit Administration has asked Booz-Allen Hamilton to identify the source of the leak.

Wow, it's like when a rock critic gets raked over for leaking some upcoming indie rock album, except with...potential real world consequences.

Terrorist Threat Assessments Authored by Booz-Allen Hamilton Leaked Through P2P File Sharing [Digital50 via Paper Thin Walls]

* That's not sarcasm. I really am thankful.
** I'm presuming. It could have been the CEO for all I know.

  • I know tons of people who still use Limewire.

  • Wow.

So someone downloading files via p2p accidentally allowed fileshare access to sensitive company documents??

I'm not sure you can fuck up much harder than that. I don't think you can explain you're way out of that one to the boss.

"Yeah, I know... it's a shame about the terrorist threat, but have you heard this leaked Britney shit?"

  • So we're attacking Germany next?

  • When I did IT for the financial aid department of a "large public university" part time students installing Limewire was one of the biggest pains in my ass. Allegedly, some piece of software necessary for work required we not lock the machines down, so needless to say people figured out pretty quick that they could install shit like that. Since I quit there, I keep expecting to hear something about student financial aid records being compromised in a manner similar to this.

    Scary stuff.

  • I use Limewire and download them all. Haven't purchased new music in ages. hahahahha!

  • As a Chicagoan, let me tell you: the greatest threat to our public transportation isn't terrorists but the assholes downstate in Springfield . They keep up their current (bad) funding act, there won't be a CTA to attack.

(Sorry, I may be a little bitter.)
