Tonight's American Idol finale, in addition to crowning the winner, is reportedly going to showcase a hodgepodge of music-related celebrities not seen since, well, the "Idol Gives Back" episode. In addition to the coronation of the newest Idol, viewers will allegedly witness:
• An appearance by Green Day (here's hoping they aren't saddled with "This Is My Now");
• Taylor Hicks, Joe Perry, and the top 12 Idols performing a medley of songs from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band;
• Appearances by Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Tony Bennett, and Smokey Robinson.
(There are also rumors floating around that Britney Spears, Beyonce, Steve Perry, and, um, Peter Noone will show up, although we have to be honest—we think that Noone is most likely to stumble onstage out of that group.)
Like last night's competition episode, we'll be liveblogging the whole shebang. Festivities start at 8 ET and run through this season's "Idol" being announced to East Coast viewers—or at least the time when we fall over from the WTF-ness of the entire thing.

Oh my god, Steve Perry. Awesome.
Green Day on American Idol? Is this fo' real-real?
@heidiho: Yeah, srsly: Is Steve Perry even ambulatory these days? Poor guy.
@heidiho: Please, please, please let there be a "We Are The World"-style collaborative rendition of "Don't Stop Believing." That would just be too perfect an ending for this season.
*Crosses fingers*
I was gonna call bullshit on the Green Day item, but then I thought to myself, Really, why?
There would be some irony in Green Day performing American Idiot on the show.
That linked article says Steve Perry will... sing a duet with Sanjaya. Oh-my-God. It's just a rumor, but still seems like a hopeless bid for ratings.
Maybe Green Day will try to pick up some punk cred by trashing the stage? :\
The other day I clicked on the Yahoo homepage and there was a story titled "Is Good Charlotte the new Green Day?" Is 1997 the new 2007?
.....As much as I hate Steve Perry, it would have been a relief to have seen him bomb onstage. Instead, we got Joe Perry, of Aerosmith, and he really, really SUCKED trying to play Sgt. Pepper. You'd think that the guy had never heard it before. Horrible. Joe, you look great. Tip your plastic surgeon. What the hell happened to your hands? that was TERRIBLE. Damn.
