- "Arcade Fire mines classic U2 and Bruce Springsteen far better than the Killers recently did. And Arcade Fire didn't lose its own voice in an attempt to sound bigger and grander. There are still plenty of its trademark noisy crescendos and old-fashioned accents like harp and hurdy-gurdy." [New York Times]
- "Unlike the cathartic Funeral, Neon Bible operates on spring-loaded tension and measured release. As such, it could strike some listeners as a disappointing follow-up, but the record's mix of newfound discipline and passion will likely imbue it with a long shelf-life." [Pitchfork]
- "Like almost everything on Neon Bible... 'No Cars Go' is excess with a point: We are drowning in the unspeakable and running out of air and fight. If only everything else on Neon Bible made that point with the same dynamic overkill." [Rolling Stone]
- "Titles like 'Oceans of Noise' advertise the immensity of the sound, and you can detect the influence of such past masters of sonic grandiosity as U2, Phil Spector, and, in the monstrous pipe-organ drones that well up behind 'Intervention,' that 18th-century wall-of-sound specialist, J.S. Bach." [Entertainment Weekly]

what happened the requisite sophmore backlash review from pitchfork? they've gone soft.
p.s. this band is a total snooze.
I didn't see any of the reviews reference John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Odd, because the Arcade Fire's second song on SNL sounded just like "On The Darkside."
Their pre-release buzz and leaked-track reviews were all tilting more-or-less toward an 8-or-less kiss of death.
I actually think the Forkers might have panicked a little here.
If only the masses would love italo disco or whatever.
Arcade Fire = Rusted Root
Whew! I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like them. I was beginning to feel isolated in a way I haven't been since I was the only person in my 4th grade class who hated Fine Young Cannibals.
Seriously MitchT. They aren't ripping off Springsteen in that song, they're ripping off people who ripped off Springsteen.
Arcade Fire mines classic U2 and Bruce Springsteen
Let me get this straight - they mean this as a compliment? I agree with iantenna, TOTAL snooze.
I whole heartedly agree that this band is a snooze. But the 750,000 hipsters who bought this album might disagree.
I hate hipster fodder as much as the next guy... usually. But I ♥ The Arcade Fire pretty much without reservation. You guys, mass contrarianism is almost as lame as mass adoration.
So do you have to pretend to like popular stuff that you actually don't in order to avoid being tagged with "mass contrarianism" or would that just leave you open for being accused of "mass adoration?"
@brasstax: I can't like EVERY band, man.
Note to self: don't joke with angry Idolator commentors.
woo, love arcade fire.
Like them, can understand why some get obsessive about them, but am not one of those people. Perhaps I need to see them live.
